The Hunchback of Notre Dame proves just how dark kids' movies get. Think about the plot, and think about just how censored it would be today. It's worth a re-watch, maybe.
What bothers me the most about the movie is that if it was made 10 years ago, it would have been a completely different film. This movie really did have teeth to it in pre-production, but since it's a "kid's movie," they had to dumb it right down so parents wouldn't complain, and since it's a recession and everybody's mad at big business, they had to throw that issue in there (i.e, How Bad Can I Be). It really is a shame.
the true reason why it was scrapped was that the song was exposing the cold harsh truth of most companies despite the film having a bunch of having nearly 70 corporate sponsors. the "its to dark" was just an excuse
@@kaos5633 Well, it was only partially an excuse. A darker, more mature movie also wouldn't have resonated as well with little kids. You know, the ones that they want to sell as many plushies and toys of marketable characters to as possible. Why risking scaring those off with deep and meaningful messages when they can just play it safe, dumb it down and make it as child-friendly as possible? There's more money to be made this way. Of course them feeling called out and all that definitely still played a huge role in this song's removal aswell, but either way, in the end a song about corporate greed got scrapped... because of corporate greed. Really makes you think, huh?
Yes. You can pass this off as "Disney is big with money and kids" but Illumination has also had a signifigant impact in the animated movie industry (thanks to a certain yellow tik tak).
@@kaos5633 Hey, I'm not saying that darker animated movies like the Hunchback of Notre Dame can't be successful. Heck, I'm not trying to defend their decision in any way. I'm just trying to say that that was likely a part of their reasoning. You see this all the time in the industry nowadays. Studios dont like taking risks like that anymore when they can just play it safe and repeat the same basic formulas all over again. Its why you dont see movies like the Hunchback anymore. Quasimodo simply isn't as likely to sell as a plushie as Olaf from Frozen. Its sad, but stuff like this plays a major factor the production of kids movies nowadays. And these companies don't care about telling a good story, they only care about cold, hard cash. Profit. And yeah, I dont think I need to point out the irony in that. If a movie idea isn't likely to go well with mainstream audiences, they'll just scrap the project and make another one. There's no shortage of ideas going around after all. Which is exactly why they had to change this one if they didn't want the whole movie to get blown off. And a movie about the destruction of nature and our planet aswell as the ugly sides of capitalism and consumerism was quite a bold topic for kids movie from the start. I'm not saying is was a bad one, mind you. Just that they might have been able to make their original vision come true if they had worked for a different company than Illumination, who are known for making their movies as marketable as possible and milking them dry (Heck, they're the ones responsible for the minions. Do I really need to say anything else?) And sadly, Illumination had them by their balls since they held the rights to the license. It really is a crying shame though. If their entire original vision for this movie was as dark and mature as this song, it could've gone down as one of the best animated movies in decades, perhaps ever. Yet it was reduced to a soulless comedy that couldn't commit to its ambitions because the higher ups realized that they are a company, too.
"You gotta look at the movie as a work of art.". Really? Are we really doing this? Alright, then: the movie's a really shitty work of art, and frankly, this song is the only sign that they ever had any idea what they were doing. No, it doesn't fit with the rest of the movie, but that's a problem with the rest of the movie, not this song.
I think they actually had a completely different movie at the start and that this song fit - but the movies painted the corporations that the studio works for in a bad light, so they had no choice but to change the entire movie to make the corporatikns look good or risk losing their jobs. It's shit.

So if anyone likes good animations then Disney, Disney Pixar, Dream Works and animations of Don Bluth are a must watch ;) Please don't let them die and remember there are more beautiful movies, and not only the new ones like Frozen :)
I disagree. Just because a song is beautiful doesn't mean it can fit in with the rest of the movie. And the producers were going with something fun and light-hearted to balance out the strong messages the movie already had. This song would have just stuck out like a sore thumb. It wouldn't have fit. And even though I love it, I'm glad it didn't make it into the movie. You gotta look at the movie as a work of art. As a whole piece. It wouldn't have worked.
It used to have a strong message, but now it's all fluff. The reason they cut it is not because it's "too dark" for kids, but because it hit too close to home for the producers of the movie. Instead they decided to make The Once-ler likeable
The editing was good, but I'm not such a big fan of this song (it's probably because of my general dislike of the Lorax movie in general, but that's just me).
@inakamoto: I see this song as representing all the potential that the Lorax movie had. They cut the song; they wasted their potential.
