Sadly, they also changed the construction of the figure. The original has a peg that the head fits onto - which made for easy and non-destructive customizing if you wanted to switch the head out with the jacket-less version that came with the map room playset. This new one has a peg that fits down into the neck socket, so it’s not so easy to switch them back and forth on a whim. Overall, I’m happy they did these, but I wish they put a bit more effort into them. Anyhow...thanks for the awesome video, as always!
The scanning issue baffles me a bit. I would have guessed that scanning it will capture more detail than just making a silicone mould. Having made silicon moulds myself I was often surprised of how much detail can be captured, if done right. I only lose detail if I use inferior material for making the mould. So to me that's what it looks like where they save money. I still like that they make these and I have mine preordered as well. But I can't understand why they lose so much detail. Does not compute. ^^
Great review Toy-Polloi. I'm loving these Indy retro figures. The more I see, the broader my smile gets. It's great to see Hasbro expanding the characters in wave 2, to incorporate the other movies. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these waves are as popular as the retro Star Wars and Marvel lines, so that we get a wave 3 and even possibly, dare I say it, a 4th. 🤠
Man, has there even been a modern reissue that hasn't been disappointing? It seems like they can't ever get it right! The brim on his hat also seems to be smaller. It looks like he's using a trilby not a fedora.
In some scenes, Indy wore gloves so if I wanted to resolve the thumb issue, I would simply sculpt gloves oon top of the hands and paint them to match the ones on screen or for simplified Kenner version.
11:02 - 11:41 - Idk why this can still be such a surprise to many, since we know fairly well how these 'products' are being manufactured. Save for some exceptions, virtually all of these minute details are being hand-painted and not printed on by some specialized robots. Which means that there sits an actual person, a fallible Human being, who applies the paint thereon free-handed with a brush. And, surprise! surprise! , the person is prone to get tired over time or there could be a different, slightly less-skilled person on the next shift. What a mystery, eh?!! 😀 😀
I still have my Indy and German disguise Indy figures that my parents bought me from Play Co. Toys in 1982 when I was four years old. Perhaps the loss of detail the reissue figures suffer from is because the new figures are scanned copies of 1:18 scale figures, whereas the original figures were from hand-tooled molds which were pantographed from a "four-up" sized model to allow for more detail in the final product.
I have a decent little collection of Kenner Indy but man, I wish I bought up more them a few years ago. They’ve gotten crazy expensive over the past five years. I’ll probably pick all these up.
I never had any of the original line as I was just past the age of collecting figures, but the original Indy figure does look so much better than the reproduction.
Nice vid and I'm looking forward to receiving mind also. I have seen that there are 2 variants to this figure with one coming on a thicker card back and with slightly different face paint apps. I'm guessing though that all of ours being sent to the UK are going to be the same as yours. Let's hope that Hasbro to with the thicker card for the remainder of this eries.
great video. I agree these figures are much more interesting than the Star Wars retro because to find the originals, even in the US. can be very expensive.
I got mine yesterday. Will probably leave it in the package for a change cos it looks good. Retro Boushh, Lando & Biker Scout have just shipped. Hoth Leia was awful with those Asian type eyes(nothing against asians of course!)
The piece of paper and over warning is because if a kid does cholesterol on a piece then hasbro can't say they didn't take every chance to warn them. It's to avoid a lawsuit rather than because of actual legal requirement. Legally yes they have to have atleast on the card.
Awesome review!👍🏻👍🏻 Head looks slightly off though like most of Hasbro retro releases, Indy's head looks bloated and lacking detail here? And Indy's hat now a weird shade of purple/brown , are Hasbro designers over compensating for the yellowing of old toys?? Low saturation of yellow on most the paint applications (Leia Bousch etc) ... Mattel have done the same thing, Hordaks crossbow which used to be a bone coloured cream shade is now bright white in the Origins release 🤷🏻♂️
9:10 - I've been wondering; where would they have placed ALL the 'legally-required' copyright info if the character at hand, on which the given action figure is based, had had anything large featured on the backside of their jacket, such as any emblem or wordmark? 🙂
I have a question: What could I use to replace the bubble on the MLC-3 mini-rig from the Empire Strikes Back collection? It's from my childhood. One of the tabs broke off back when I was a kid and eventually got lost. I just can't think of anything I could use to replace it. Any ideas?
I’d rather have pay more for better quality sculpt but majority people would instead complain on the price so Hasbro listens to the people wanting next to nothing quality. I bought one but mainly to keep on card as I own the original Kenner one loose.
I wish the pants were more accurately colored too, the original gets it right. I’ve only seen three now and they all have an extra lump of plastic on his hat, right side in the dent.
Hello got good news for you, l hope u see this message, DONT THROW AWAY YOUR CARD BLISTERS ANYMORE, I’m not sure if u know trick by now but using a paint stripper called CITRIS STRIP applied to the bubble edges will remove the card backing 100% in 6 minutes clean as a whistle and can be reused to recarded a figure. If you haven’t done a video on it please do so to make others aware. THANKS 😊
I feel like you're reaction is tje same as mine to these new reissues lol. I'm all for it though I've got all the g1 transformers and beastwars from walmart and even got all the teenage mutant ninja turtles that have come out. I feel that if im just gentle with them I can enjoy them just as much as an original witch cost way more and because of there age can brake the same.
I was looking at my original Indy figure as I was watching this, and I noticed that the new retro versions seem to have a fatter head than the original. The details look a lot softer as well, and the older paint manages to capture more of Ford's likeness than these new ones. I'm really disappointed that they just colored his jacket black. ??? He never had a black jacket like "the Fonz".... it was always a dark brown, leather sort of bomber jacket looking affair. The black just looks very, very flat and cheap, as you mentioned. It's great that they improved the width of the thumbs, but if he can't hold the weapons anyway, I'm not sure why they bothered. ?? Hasbro's quality control makes no sense. The corporate budget thing just keeps getting in the way of Hasbro truly achieving nice figures these days, and it's a real shame. If these had looked more like the original released figures, I might have ordered them, but I could tell right away when they were first advertised that they were going to be the same sort of inferior modern Hasbro offerings. :( Your review was a good one, Dave, as you summed everything up beautifully. I can see why you would want to have these, given how scarce they are in the UK. They're not exactly commonplace to find in the U.S. these days either. I rarely see them at shows that I attend, and when I do, you almost never see Marion, and when you do, she's usually incomplete--without the cloth goods dress.
I’d be interested to see the reissued Marion and SS’s seemingly outstanding version go head to head… I wonder which would get kicked to the kerb?! And to echo other comments, it does seem baffling that 3D scans aren’t ever tweaked to regain lost clarity, a missed opportunity unless I’m misunderstanding the process
During the casting process even the original figures would've lost detail - but the original master sculpt would've been even sharper in detail - so making a new version from a factory made figure will obviously come out even more 'degraded' in sculpt detail - surely there is a computer effect they can apply to make the 3D model to make it a bit sharper before they go into production, to counter-act the lossy nature of the process. ?
The packaging looks nice in layout, on the front at least, and properly brand new looking heh. I've see that from time to time but I'm not sure how dirt or grit making into toy manufacturing, especially questionable for a company as big as Hasbro.🤔 Got to be some lawyers to lay off at Hasbro when you have that much redundancy in warning labels, sure you need to list it on the packaging but two to three times is just eating up prime layout space especially with the multilingual standard we use now.🤮 It would be interesting to see somebody go abroad and do a report on paint-app economics, see the skill in action for speed and quality ratios versus how much it costs to meet a spectrum of fidelity standards. I have seen some print pad examples where I think they might switch to automation for eye detail before anything else because mistakes there are more apparent Eg. wonky pupils. Definitely an issue with modern tooling, it auto-smooths everything by default and isn't good at sharp, rough, or concave details. It will get better but it's same issue movie CGI VS Practical in that real objects will always have more surface resolution than any approximation can hope to muster Ie. microscopic atomic properties. Scale is a factor, CG modeling is not so bad in larger figures but smaller scales lose too much detail, that the original wax sculpt method did much better.
Great review video, Dave. But Hasbro continues to fail its customers / fans, with truly awful quality control issues and seemingly lack of care. Just wondering, but could your new, loose Indy be a "fat face" variant?! :)
I don't get why these recreations don't have sharper lines. As I'd assume the molds are based off of a digital recreation, which means you should be able to have sharper lines than the original that was done via hand sculpting.
The biggest thing that annoys me about these are the amount of plastic in the packaging, no need for it, a bit of tape to hold weapons like the old days is enough.
As it is with most retro stuff. It could have been a lot better, we have seen a lot worse and nothing will ever be as good as the originals. That being said. This is an odd line. There never were enough Indy’s to go around. Glad everyone has a chance to own him… even though he is not perfect.
The whip isn’t really convincing. The Lego Indiana Jones figure has a better one. Lego released new Indiana jones sets. I will buy one of these sets. Maybe the cheap one with Indiana and Henry Jones in the old car. Keep up the good work.
I’m trying to move away from modern figures, and I never had these as a kid so there’s no real pull to them, yet I’m seriously thinking about getting them! What’s wrong with me!!😂 Thanks Dave a very thorough review as always 👍
Thanks for the review, I ordered some thanks to your review! Wish they were better quality but I’m glad the packaging is done like original - appreciate your detailed video!
You hit the nail on the head about cheapness. You can see it in all the toys lately, even transformers. The quality has dropped, leaving it up to 3rd party companies to produce good quality collectibles worth the price
They are made like junk... Bent weapons, horrible paint schemes and the cardbacks are cheap cheap... Marion had no flower on her dress and her dress is way off. Hasbro needs to STAY AWAY from RETROS!
We need the plane , the truck and in the future the motorcycle with sidecar
Toy Polloi presents INDIANA JONES NEW ADVENTURE ESCAPE FROM THE PLASTIC PRISON!
In general, the Hasbro vintage figures need a deft artist hand in Z Brush to compensate for the 3D scan’s lack of resolution.
Details are definitely lacking in the retro figures, faces look way too soft or bloated.
Sadly, they also changed the construction of the figure. The original has a peg that the head fits onto - which made for easy and non-destructive customizing if you wanted to switch the head out with the jacket-less version that came with the map room playset. Thank you for your review.

Great review Dave!👍. I have only seen one in stores at a Target.
Really want to get the Marin and Indiana

great video. I agree these figures are much more interesting than the Star Wars retro because to find the originals, even in the US. can be very expensive.
Why is this release so much better then the Star Wars Retro line.. They really dropped the ball on Star Wars
It's sad these aren't as good as the original
Good review DM.

@Toy Polloi Thank you so much. The video was a perfect resource.

When I get the rest of this wave I will be comparing Marion to the Stan Solo one as I am interested to see myself how they look together.
Where did you get that theme music D&B remix?
I made it myself 😎

I'll have to make a longer version of it. It was just a bit if fun for these review videos.

I would like a few of these.
I was never in on the first ones, but I picked up the map room set way back in the day- my sole Indiana Jones set.
They are worth getting, but prepare for some disappointment when it comes to the quality of them.
Will any vehicles be coming out?
I very much doubt it. But it would be nice.

Is that an old head from the Butch and Sundance line? That doesn't look like the old Indiana Jones head.
It's just a very bad copy of the vintage head.
