    I have rarely, if ever, received so many requests for a review. The pedal is already legendary, it seems, blowing one competitor off the field after another. I’m talking about the Muffroom Cloud from Thorpy FX. So, here it is, my review.
    I’ve lost count over how many Big Muff inspired pedals I’ve reviewed over the years but it’s quite a few. I must admit that it takes a lot to impress me these days. I mean, how is it even possible to offer something new and exciting on that circuit?
    Well, the Muffroom Cloud certainly offer something new when it comes to design. The super cool box both look and feels like it could withstand an atomic bomb and the details in the engravings are beautiful. Another new feature is the fact that the tone control is replaced by a powerful two-band EQ controlling the bass and treble.
    David Gilmour is known for his silky smooth Big Muff tones. It’s the combination of his Strat, the mid rangy Hiwatts set to near breaking point and the addition of a booster. All this, adds an amp like character to the Muff but it also makes the Muff sound less like a fuzz and more like a modern distortion...

    I was anti-Muff/Fuzz (couldn't use em) = until this one. I love this pedal. Gives you a high-fi Studio-type Muff tone (with sustain @ 11 o'clock) . The only muff/fuzz I have been able to use in a Live performance. Thorpy = great company to do business with - too.

    If there's a video out there that perfectly addresses this Thorpy Fuzz, this is it. I'm going buy one now. Sounds like a EQD Dispatch master at the end of the chain too. Killer tone and playing.

    The Muffroom Cloud has unsurpassed string clarity, it's stunning really. Greatest muff on the market along with the Stomp Under Foot offerings.

    I am buying this pedal next week and I've been watching all the reviews and I stumbled here. Wow. The pedal sounds great with your rig and your fingers. Can't wait to get mine.

    My favourite big muff! I think a good way to go for gilmour tones is to have something like this as well as a Germanium fuzz face to cover the early gilmour tones :) Nice playing Bjorn!

      Agreed! Although silicon will do the trick as well, or even a proco RAT

    Gorgeous tone & phrasing! Love how the pedal gives the notes 'girth' without losing clarity. Oh, BTW, I see that you are planning on installing toaster pickups...in that guitar? ;-)

    Hi Bjorn
    Excellent review as always. Are you using your Universal Audio Solo 610 Mic Preamp with SM57? What type of settings are you typcially using with with the 610?

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Craig Hylwa Thanks! Yes, it's always in the chain when I'm recording. For these reviews I use a fairly neutral setting, with the input at about 10:00 and the gain at noon.

    Just bought a Keeley Fuzz Bender, which is far too harsh and loses so much when I dial back the volume on my guitar. This seems like the fuzz I should have bought.

    Bjorn! I've been trying to decide on the best replacement for my Big Muff, and can't decide between the Buffalo FX Patriot, Evolution, and now the Muffroom Cloud. Which do you like most for solos and sustain? I want something that will sing until I cut it off!

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kyle Byquist What kind of amp and pickups do you have?

    • @KyleByquist
      @KyleByquist 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gilmourish riis I use a Two-Rock Studio Pro 50, and my main guitars are a Strat with single coils and a Gibson CS-356 with standard humbuckers

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Kyle Byquist The Patriot is perhaps the most Muffish of the three, based on the early 90s Sovtek model. Lots of mids and low end and tons of sustain. The Muffroom sounds kind of a distortion meets Muff, with a smoother tone, brighter, with more gain and less mids. The Evolution sounds more like a conventional distortion, closer to a classic Marshall and the RAT pedal. All three would probably go nicely with your rig but I think I'd go for the Evolution for versatility.

    Sounds fantastic , as everything You play always does. This pedal works well without a booster then?
    I'm very happy with my vick audio Rams head but I find it needs the power booster to get the sound opened out a bit . This sounds very crisp as it is .
    So many pedals these days it's almost impossible to choose.

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sean Dyer Thank you! You could place a booster after it but it really doesn't need one.

      It seems you and many advocate the ''color boost'' and ''the muffs'', are you saying this pedal doesn't need one whereas the 'old Muff' did? Thank you

    • @starwizardmusic-cymaticemp5201
      @starwizardmusic-cymaticemp5201 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gilmourish riis
      ... that is to say I know you did say ''you dont need one with this pedal'', Im specifying the question thus perhaps to... * why do you think this pedal doesnt need the color boost? As Id prefer not to have to use both, as my pedal board is already called ''The Star Trek Enterprise'' Haha

    I found a Lionheart head & cab for $1K AU. As new, never used.
    Should I pull the trigger? Have to sell my Blues Jnr or Bassbreaker.

      It always depends on what tones you want but I really couldn't be happier with that amp!

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      gilmourish riis I couldn't do it. Too big for my accommodation. I still have the small combos and they work well as a portable wet/dry rig.
      If I can only use one amp I go with Laney VC30. Plenty of headroom and takes pretty much all pedals well.
      I'd love a Lionheart 20W stack (half stack, yeah?) but it's just not doable atm, even though I believe it's perhaps the best option for Gilmour tones.
      Thanks for your reply and I love the channel and blog (even though for some reason I am unable to post comments on the blog, even when signed in it won't let me)

    Can you show us where you would place this pedal and some settings for an Animals style sound in a pedal chain?

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Darryld1 Its place it first among the gain pedals, after a compressor. The actual settings depends very much on your pickups and amp, but a good start would be the settings I use for the Comfortably Numb clip.

    • @LysanderLH
      @LysanderLH 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      gilmourish riis Thanks Bjorn. So i'll place it after my Keeley Comp and before modulation effects. Thanks. I'm trying to get Dogs,Sheep etc tones. PS. I have EMGs (SPC&EXG) and Lindy Fralins on another guitar and a Blues Jr.

    Awesome demo, Bjorn! But... For a "Muff" clone, something seems to be missing... POWER (that one that we find with the Buffalo FX Patriot - th-cam.com/video/kUQWkSUtyeQ/w-d-xo.html). Best regards!

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Carlos M Thank you! It's a different pedal. The Buffalo has a much darker and overall bigger tone, which the Sovtek pedals had. The Muffroom Cloud is cleaner and more articulate.

    Epic Brother, th-cam.com/users/BjornRiis thank you again
    I presume you added delay/reverb in the mix since it is not mentioned in the fx chain, tho I also presume that's because the discussion here really was the pedal and gain character etc and not modulation FX
    Awesome thank you again
    Great playing as usual
