I was wondering if you've found any comprehensive info on Mormon settlement into San Diego? I know that groups like the Italians and Portuguese came to SD from the fishing/Tuna industries, and the settlement of east county occurred following the dispossession of indigenous lands and WW2, Korea, Vietnam military infrastructure and subsequent GI bills for housing and university, plus the southern suburbs following the increased commerce with NAFTA, but where was the LDS church in all of this? They seem to be a constant looming presence in SD (from the massive church and influence in financing) but I never hear anything about them in SD's local, national, and international history (given the Mormon colonies in Mexico). Is there anything by an academic/university press you'd recommend?

The San Diego History Center or the San Diego Library may be able to direct you to some academic resources. When I start focusing on the 1840s next year, I'll be examining the arrival of the Mormon settlers. I would definitely recommend studying the Mormon Battalion- the only US military unit in US history based on a religious sect. They arrived in San Diego (old town) in January, 1847 from Iowa. There even is a museum operated by The Church in Old Town San Diego.

I love rural San Diego in the east. San Diego feels more like Mediterranean of U.S. with it's architecture and terrain. Nothing like LA 👍
I just wish we didn't slap huge suburbs everywhere and instead built more like Italian neighborhoods on hills
