      Each pitch here is a work of art. I only ever use single pole pyramid tarps though, for quick pitching and weight savings

      Great video mate. I tend to go with the trusty tarp tent setup. Although I've been meaning to give your 'Gunyah' setup a go.
      Those Alton Goods 3x3 are just about the perfect tarp. So many tie outs with so many setup options!

      Well done man, I was almost not going to watch cause I didn't think it would be all that interesting, but that was pretty cool and I'm about to pull the trigger on an Alton goods tarp.
      I hope you are keeping safe over there mate, and when you come out of lockdown I'd really love to see a few old school multi day hiking/survival trips with map and compass navigation, comparing where you nav with the map and where you end up on GPS in post. Maybe chuck in a bit more first person view of traversing some of the sections for a more immersive feel.
      And if you get adventurous it would be awesome if you did some 360 VR vids. There's a video of two guys hiking in to the Colorado river on Oculus videos and then using inflatable rafts to head down the river. It's one of the most immersive outdoors vids I've seen. If you have access to a Quest 2 you should be able to find it. Just some ideas to keep in fresh in parallel with what you are doing. You're a national treasure mate. Love your work. Dead Set Legend.

    I grabbed some paper and made origami tarps as I watched :) It's an easy way to compare the inside space when they're all set up in front of you. The Gunya setup looks easy to raise and swap between open & closed up.

    Spent many years tarping in the army and dismissed it as an option thinking it was just an army thing.

    OF COURSE! A Y stick to leverage the back wall instead of straight line to peg. Brilliant. So simple I'm irritated I didn't think of it in any tarp trip. :D

    I've used a version of the "tarp tent" pitch (used to poles at the doorway instead of one) on an exposed bald in the aftermath of a hurricane with 70 mph gusts. Many of the conventional tents were flattened that night, yet my basic tarp was fine.

  • @tonylloyd5077

    Camped under a Hootchie while in the Army.
    Pros - lightweight, versatile
    Cons - Mozzies, Sandflies, Bull Ants, Centipedes and an over-curious King Brown.
    Used a lightweight tent ever since but cudos to those who persist with Tarp Camping.

    I like having a tarp for its versatility, but I tend to use it for a shade awning, wind shield, rain fly, ground sheet or emergency shelter (never actually had that kind of emergency yet!) rather than as a primary shelter. If you've hiked in a place where it rains a LOT, it's great to quickly string one up to eat lunch and have a proper rest under. I'm interested in getting a bug tent to combine with a tarp, though, for summer camping - the ventilation would be so much better than a tent.

    • @maxsparks5183
      @maxsparks5183 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why would you camp at all in the summer heat and mosquitos? I truly don’t get it. If it’s not cold, this southern man isn’t sleeping outside voluntarily.

Great little shelter. Fantastic video mate and some really interesting set ups. Hope that you guys get out of lockdown soon and back out to do your thing. Atb, J 👍.

    • @andrewpippos1007
      @andrewpippos1007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I agree, would be fine in calm warm weather but I would still rather not take my chances with the wind, mozzies, rain and the odd animal.

    • @billyaitken1713
      @billyaitken1713 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Place a small round stone on the outside of the tarp, on the inside wind paracord around the stone and tie one end off (securing the stone to the tarp , but leaving you a length of cord hanging down on the inside). Then you have a tie-up point for a mosquito net.

    Gunyah: After years of 3x3 (10x10) tarps for versatile hammock/ground coverage, I broke down and bought a lightweight 8.5x8.5 with only 4 tie-outs on each face creating only 3 spaces. Works great if I peg a back corner and use the first tie-out forward from the adjacent corner for the head-end back peg. This gives a back line of just under 9', but actually creates a greater volume at the head end because there is almost a foot of extra material remaining to create the ground run for the head end. I then decide, depending on weather, to raise the foot lower at the first tie up from the foot corner, or higher at the second tie-out. I now think I like this better than the 10x10 as it is easier to keep taut and has less unneeded space at the foot and more at the head. Of course the ground sheet is smaller but I never liked to sleep on it anyway because of the extra wear., and it still works great for gear storage.
