I had good spooky season reading. I read All fiends of Hell based on your rec and really enjoyed it. Followed it up with Salem’s lot and it might be my new favourite King book.
Love the monthly wrap-ups 😁 Always nice to catch up on what’s going on with people. I read 8 books in October and I have a tie for my book of the month between Boy’s Life by McCammon and Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Loves both of those!
I love how your book hangover implies “only” reading 4-5 books a month! Haha. I was in a complete slump this year, but October was great cause I was able to start reading consistently again :)
I read 6 books in October, and my book of the month is Nothing Compares 2 U by Toure. So, Prince has been my favorite musician since I was a kid, and I thought I knew everything there was to know about in, at least in a public sense. This book presented his life in a different light. It was very informative, very poignant, and very intimate. And very sad. And thing that stood out the most from reading this book is how much his parents' decisions when he was a kid affected him through the entirety of his life. I knew of the decisions they made, but not how much it affected him. I was floored.
Whew, I finally finished Dracula. It put me in such a slump that it had to win my October book of the month because it was the only book I read, even though I really didn't like it at all. I gave it like 2 stars 😅
I read Dracula last month too. Definitely glad that I did and I enjoyed it, but you're right that it's really slow. I told my wife those 360 pages felt more like 800
@emosongsandreadalongs It really did! I wanted to love it so much. It was just too repetitive for me, but the writing style just seems so dramatic that, while normal for that time, it reads like parody now. I can definitely understand why it's a classic, though! I've taken to dramatically calling a coworker "Friend John," which has admittedly been hilarious!
Just snaged a copy of The Exorcist, Olive Edition for 6$ at BJ's Wholesale Club -- Got it cause you rated it so high and have read much more horror than me. I actually don't think i've ever seen the movie so excited to give it a try! Little late for spooky season but we move lol
Hi, Mike. For alien invasion apocalypse stories, you could check out The Last Exodus by Paul Tassi. Sequels not quite as good in my opinion but I really enjoyed the first book.
My book of the month is Dungeon Crawler Carl. It was just a lot of fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously which is kind of where I’m at after reading Lightbringer this year. Kind of like after Wheel of Time I just needed a decompression phase. The New Jason Pargin book is pretty good too.
In October I read Dracula, The Haunting of Hill House, The House on the Borderland and I Am Legend. Plus a handful of short stories. I Am Legend was easily my book of the month
Mike, I had my biggest reading month in YEARS, this past month. The Blade Itself: FINISHED! Incredible. "Say one thing for Mike Book-Reviews, say he recommends a good book." The Next Million Years: FINISHED! "This book shows how the people at 'the top' really think, and how we are already well under way in their plans." (Also, the stuff from the previous book, above, about "Civilization" PERFECTLY matches what Darwin's grandson says, here.) The Hustler: FINISHED! The art of f*cking WINNING. I have never hated a main character more, whom I've loved. And I read The Blade Itself. The Art of Living: GREAT. The Sermon on the Mount, minus any Christian trappings, for better and worse. The Unexpected Exorcist: Substack book, hell of a good time. The ABC of Childhood Tragedy: Vol. 1: Jordan Peterson at a level of Brutal, I've never seen. Thank you, for The Blade Itself.
@@EatWithBadlands Thank you. I was thinking, "I love all these characters, but I don't know how Joe is going to make them grow in ways that feel surprising, now that I know them, all." Except Glokta, of course, but I see that coming, kinda.
I didn't like it that much because it veers too much into fantasy/supernatural horror which I don't tend to like! Realistic, psychological horror is more frightening imo!
Wyrd & Other Derelictions was an interesting collection by Adam Nevill, short stories describing aftermaths of horrific events. Some of his other shorts stories are decent, but AtFoH is my first long-form work of his.
Bakker could easily write horror. Setting a tone of impending doom waiting for something bad to happen. And while graphic, he leaves enough for the reader to fill in the blanks. He just gets in your head. And some is just messed up.
I couldn't wait To keep on going In that world of Prince of nothing so The Thousand Fold Thought about 50 pages in And he's still building our main characters which is pretty awesome.
October 1. Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill 2. The Woman in White by: Wilkie Collins 3. The SpellBook of Katrina Van Tassel by Alyssa Palombo 4. Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow 5. The Tall Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe 6. The Omen by David Seltzer 7. John Adams by David McCullough I had a lot of great reads for October, but I can't decide which one is my favorite. The only one I was slightly disappointed with was The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel, but even then I didn't hate it.
I found some Robert mcCammon books I didn't have. Grabbed battlefield earth for some sci Fi and a Stephen Graham Jones. I haven't read anything from him but want to give it a try. My TBR is out of control
I wonder if you might like Christina Henry. I really like her as well as T Kingfisher. Christina Henry's books "Alice" and "Near the Bone" were both pretty grim at times.
FWIW, the one female horror writer I’ve read who I think is fantastic is Catriona Ward. She’s a solid writer and deft with a plot twist. I recommend The Girl from Rawblood and Little Eve in particular.
I really like the hollow place, i mean the horror alongside the drama and humour is portrayed so well. I've written a book on bribooks named Broken free with broken minds it's a short story around 4000 words and as an aspiring author i would appreciate it if you could read and review it.
Hopefully u add karl edward wagner to your list mike. Lots of robert Howard influence. Wrote excellent fantasy kane series and horror novels. Darkness weaves in kane series and in a lonely place horror book are great reads. Enjoy your videos keep them coming
My book of the month is almost impossible to choose for October because thats when i found and read empire of the vampire and empire of the damned and read them back to back so maybe both since technically theyre apart of the same series?
I read T. Kingfisher’s What Moves the Dead and I didn’t care for it. One of the reasons was the humor. It felt out of place in that book especially since it’s meant to take place in the 19th century.
Looking forward to your full assessment of the «Prince of Nothing» Trilogy! 😎 My own November TBR: «The Steel Tsar» (A Nomad of the Time Streams» Trilogy #3) by Michael Moorcock (Multiverse/Alternative History/Time Travel Steampunk(?)😅) «Lord of Light» by Roger Zelazny (Science Fantasy inspired by the Legend of Siddhartha Gautama/the Buddha) «The Fury of the Gods» (Bloodsworn Saga #3) by John Gwynne (Epic Fantasy inspired by Norse Mythology): You might have heard about it! 😅 «Dreaming the Eagle» («Boudica» #1) by Manda Scott (Historical Fiction about the Celtic British Queen and her Rebellion against the Romans) «The Wall» (City of Victory Trilogy #3) by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during the building of Hadrian’s Wall) «The Power Broker» by Robert Caro (Political Biography/Investigative Journalism Classic, my Q4 long-read) Cheers Mike!
My favorite book of October was Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman, much to my shock since I read so many good books. If you get a chance you should definitely check it out, and if possible try the audiobook because it has the BEST narrator I’ve ever heard! 🤩
Anyone familiar with why book 5 end of road for Stormlight? I think he hinted before of hearing about delay afterwards for 6, but I’m not familiar. Now I’m nervous of another series never ending.
@@JG-hr8rlstormlight is a planned 10 novel series, with the first 5 happening in era 1 of the cosmere, and I think the latter 5 will take place in the 2nd or 3rd era of cosmere
@@edwinvillalobos7159 thank you I found his Chanel looking into other fantasy series after reading first 4 books of Stormlight, but didn’t follow Sanderson Or any of this news. Appreciate the info
I believe Sanderson will not publish another Stormlight in 5-6 years, and he took 14 years to publish the first 5. So Stormlight 10 will be ~20 years away. I will be 55 by that time.
T. Kingfisher is always going to throw in a joke. I just finished The Twisted Ones. It made me laugh. I don’t think of her books as serious horror. She is creepy fun. I liked A House with Good Bones more than The Twisted Ones.
The Twisted Ones is exactly the same, the protagonist is constantly joking on every page, even in moments that should be scary/tense. It gets old. T Kingfisher is not my humor, and the story was a drag, so I didn't care for it.

I’m reading Lonesome Dove. It’s amazing, so glad I took your recommendation for it.
I read Lonesome Dove a few years ago, and since then I’ve probably recommended it more than any other book.
Don't listen to the people to talk down about the other 3 books in the series, they're all amazing. Hope you enjoy LD and read the others after it!
