That's what makes Micheal so effective, he has a way to show you something that is complicated and put it into a way that one can simply understand, and he has been doing it since the early inceptions of Vsauce.
What was shown in this video is exactly the process used in artificial neural networks to recognize images, it's called forward propagation (input -> prediction). That being said it doesn't talk about how these neurons are actually learning to recognize these specific patterns (lines, dots, angles, faces, etc...). In this experiment the neurons were preprogrammed to fire when they see a line, an angle, a loop, etc... The algorithm used in deep learning to achieve this task is called backward propagation (prediction -> input). There is some evidence that the brain does a similar thing, although it's probably way more complex than what is programmed in our computers today. But hey, it works pretty well

One of the best episodes so far, that was honestly so awesome to see it unfold like that, and the fact that the whole system not only worked but it did it so fast. Just so cool.
This is probably one of my favourite experiments of all time. I can only imagine how much further you could've taken the experiment by adding more depth.
Depends how big you want the numbers to be that you add together. You can add together 1+1 with around 5 neurons. Then I think you need an extra 8 or so neurons for every power of two increase. This is based on the equivalence between artificial neurons, logic gates and integer arithmetic.
Dylan Cope I’m talking about separate systems like in this experiment that see the numbers, relay them back, have another section understand the full numbers, a further back section add them up and then output the number. Basically this entire system with an addition function
@@brandonhughes4076 ahhh cool. You could have two image detector networks and them an adder network, but the adder network would be roughly the same size as a detector. However, this is a bit overkill. It would probably be possible to train a network roughly the same size as one detector number that could compute the additional of two input numbers. As far are the network is concerned, the world is just inputs and labels. The pattern corresponding to "4+7" simply has the label "11". I doubt the network they've created is at full capacity, so it should be possible to retrain for your addition task.
Judging from introspection and computer design, you don’t need to create a linear neural network. The addition is better represented by a memory combined with an adder unit and a clock, so you can do addition one digit at a time and store intermediate results.
my mum has nocturnal epilepsy. it's a common misconception that epilepsy=photosensitive, which is not true at all, in fact it's quite rare. seizures are due to abnormal signalling in the brain, photosensitive epilepsy is triggered by visual stimuli, my mum's is triggered by a combo of sleep hormones and dream activity
"7...and we put a line through it." haha. That is how we draw Sevens in Germany, so that you cant confuse a ugly 7 with a 1. I just noticed for the first time, that the keyboard 7 also has no line through it.
Here in Brazil too. Though, I think that both ways (w/ and w/o the line) are used everywhere. I don't think it is a country thing, but that it varies from person to person. I have no evidence to speak for everyone, but as far as I know, there are people who write 7 with and people who write it without the line. I personally do put a line through 7, it just looks weird if I don't XD.

Take the gumball average approximation scenario and try to apply it, not to counting, but to social decisions and laws, and it's not far off. The common goal of brain and a government is trying to get a massive group of individuals to operate as whole, to make emergent decisions beneficial to the organism.

Yeah he can do that
One of the best episodes so far, that was honestly so awesome to see it unfold like that, and the fact that the whole system not only worked but it did it so fast. Just so cool.
This is probably one of my favourite experiments of all time. I can only imagine how much further you could've taken the experiment by adding more depth.
I wonder how many "neurons" it would take to carry out a simple addition, with only the retina seeing the numbers used
Depends how big you want the numbers to be that you add together.
This man is a global asset... Please take care of him. He is a combination of genius and absolute artistry...
This is why seizures happen in the brain, huh? Because the flashing lights fire the neurons on and off continuously.. Wow! Such a good episode
n-not quite, but warmer? It's a significant bit more complicated
Epilepsy
my mum has nocturnal epilepsy. it's a common misconception that epilepsy=photosensitive, which is not true at all, in fact it's quite rare. seizures are due to abnormal signalling in the brain, photosensitive epilepsy is triggered by visual stimuli, my mum's is triggered by a combo of sleep hormones and dream activity
"7...and we put a line through it."
haha. That is how we draw Sevens in Germany, so that you cant confuse a
ugly 7 with a 1.
The comment has 7 likes
I'm from the US and I put a line through my 7's if i accidentally make an ugly one which is most of the time
I always put a line through it and I’m American
germans have "drei" sense of humour.
I have no idea why, but watching this even for like the seventh time makes my eyes water. This is just marvelous, incredible and wonderful on a whole another level.
"Get Procreating"
Sorry Michael, best I can do is 0.
,,Get procreating, please. I want to make a bigger superhuman mind" is my new favourite quote. I will quote it in random places at random times without context.
What is good about YT premium is that all comments on the video are about the video it self.
Please don't say that my comment isn't about the video
Well your watching a channel for learning. I'm sure if you went to the other YT Red channels you'd get some weird comments haha!
And I wonder about the Red series by channela for kids, obviously kids can't purchase Red themselves. So make me wonder if kids are watching those series or adults?
@@huntzkush what if parents get YT red so that their children doesn't encounter inappropriate Ads or videos. Or maybe Google knows that there are some grown up people who are into children videos.
parents buy it for them.

Breaking bad>GOT
Boy was it hot that day. I still find it bonkers that I’ve performed marching band shows numerous times there, and I got to be a part of this episode. Really cool stuff. I was number 115.
This was one of the best videos I've ever seen in my life! Such a clever content, such a great illustration. Thank you, Michael! That was incredibly enlightening!
16:05 July 21, 2018. Just goes to show much time and effort Micheal and the crew puts into every single video. Another amazing episode! Keep 'em coming!
I love Michael, just the sincere "I love cats" at 7:32
:3
I live in your hometown and i didnt even know, thats pretty epic
Lucky! That is so cool :D
You don't even deserve to be in the presence of the sauce man then
that is pretty pathetic. how dare you not knowing the Sauce Man?!?!
You're not even worthy to view his DONG
missed it
Watching this now from Stilwell KS.
Eat a poopy! 😁❤️

These replies make no sense
10:56 Finally... some people starting arrays at 0 !
Love you Michael, great show, can't wait for S4, you seemed to have so much fun ❤
Hey Michael, Vsauce here. We'd like to thank you for making the entire Mind Field series free. You are an amazing person and your content is amazing, too. We love you! And as always, thanks for reading!

My brain: I'M NOT YOUR FRIEEEEND
"get procreating" never thought we'd see the day Michael telling us all to have sex but here we are
Why don't you try to get Washington DC to function like that!?
Damn.
Government needs a brain lol.
But that's actually a really interesting idea. Representative democracies are, in some ways, very similar to the model discussed. Take the gumball average approximation scenario and try to apply it, not to counting, but to social decisions and laws, and it's not far off. The common goal of brain and a government is trying to get a massive group of individuals to operate as whole, to make emergent decisions beneficial to the organism.
🤔🤭🤫

@Mike Keller best response!
"I can count" Yeah for many hours in fact
I love your work Michael
These last 7 days were absolute torture...
I know I was hoping he would release them all like Stranger Things, maybe the other episodes aren't finished with editing or something.
@@TechNextLetsGo they now only release once a week, so that we have to renew our TH-cam Premium subscription if we want to see every episode :( smart play by youtube

Y’all heard of a free trial?
Thank you, Michael, from the bottom of my heart for making the entire Mind Field series free. You are inspiring future generations to ask questions and stay curious, pursue careers in academic fields like science, psychology, and philosophy, and to have their minds expanded. I’m looking forward to binge-watching all these episodes.
I personally think this is the best episode that after 3 seasons, I still remember it and coming back
He made his hometown function as a brain on a football field. I guess you could call it a:
Field Mind
Nice stolen joke
@@lukerubin1896 The show's called mind field, and there's a mind field. I'm sure more than one person came to that conclusion.
LOL
*you had one job*
@@lukerubin1896 hi peanut brain man dream stan, you do not represent dream well
Dude I'm gonna write a script that works this way. This is such a relativley easy way to create a very soft thinking computer. I love it.
That was LITERALLY a mind field. Also, only cool people do marching band- trumpets are better though ;P
😂😂😂
Only cool people do marching band!
Percussion is the best. Without us the rest of you wouldn't be able to step in-rhythm ;)
I play trumpet, why do we always think we are the best?
because we are
This one time at band camp..
This was the coolest thing I've seen in a long, long time
as a marching band kid, michael being a former marcher himself is honestly heartwarming.
Dude I love your pfp lol
We could make a bigger example, like with an app, it would be cool.
That's an amazing idea
that's what AI and Machine learning do
@@gurpreetsingh-xj1kz I assumed they meant an app for people (neurons) to use, large scale, worldwide, and you don't need 20 gallons of coffee.
@@gurpreetsingh-xj1kz , yes and no, in machine learning the people only train the AI, they do not proccess the data.
Why is the intro mirrored?
All the numbers and all the text is mirrored, I am confused.
Watch is on the right hand during the intro, but switches to the left hand once the camera starts zooming out.
Its because VSauce is plotting against humanity.
because image is reversed in the brain.
Because its horse shit and you're fucking with us
Good catch
Yeah, my neurones failed to process the numbers on the bibs. I only see eights now, help.
he literally created mind field in mind field, truly one of the show of all time
I feel like Michael is giving us more knowledge than we can handle
