    Lessons learned from Ralph today:
    1) realism can't have comedy
    2) realistic dialogue must sound thought out and prepared for, like a speech
    3) drunk guys on a subway in the middle of the night should sound like they're reciting poetry to sound realistic

    To sum up Ralph's video:
    His friends made him feel stupid on a podcast for liking Joker. Now he feels the need to project his own insecurity onto everyone else who likes the movie.
    On a related note, I used to like the videos from the three members of Sardonicast. Somehow, since that show started, all three of them have become unbearable to listen to. Oh well...

    • @thereviewersblock7459

      Rock Mobster I would also like to add something else to sum up the video. Paraphrasing from another comment I put in JLongbone’s video of this.
      “You don’t know cinema, I know cinema. I’m a film student so I know what cinema is. I’m not into that mainstream stuff, I’m into indie and expiremental artsy films”
      As for SPL-316’s question. You’ll see that Ralph shift in opinion from liking the movie to hating is too huge of a shift in opinion. You don’t go from “it was pretty good” to “it’s formulaic, dull, superhero movie, it’s unoriginal and it’s the death of cinema”. That and the fact that Ralph’s criticism of the film boils down to “it’s corny and it’s bad” without explaining anything heavily suggests that his opinion was swayed by the sardonicast crew. And now he’s venting out his frustration of them making him feel stupid on his audience.

    • @MechaSkeleton
      @MechaSkeleton 5 ปีที่แล้ว +141

      Rock Mobster I used to like the sardonicast crew too, but I can barely tolerate them now. They seem to value the “artsy” movies too much and they come off really aloof. Still appreciate IHE’s search for the worst though

    • @jaredkalergi5498
      @jaredkalergi5498 5 ปีที่แล้ว +153

      We are lucky TLJ came out and unveiled all the wolves in sheep's clothing like sardonicast. They and so many others on YT convinced an audience they had something worth saying, until TLJ came around and forced them to chose between Hollywood politics and common sense, forced them to start twisting themselves into knots and somehow turn "art" into some post-modernist dribble devoid of even the very concept of objective standards just to defend it.
      The real shame is that some of them had some talent, but they refuse to let it get in the way of their standing with modern "artists", throwing all talent and common sense aside the moment anyone dares to critique something the "artists" tell them they should like.

    I hate the comment about "it's not realistic, people wouldn't say this" or "People don't do this"...We live in a world where people go to stores, grab milk and slam it on the ground because they think it's funny. Where people can't even be bothered to use a toilet properly or clean up after themselves because it's "some one else's job". I've read/watched about kids cutting the ears off of puppies, lighting cats on fire and throwing rocks at dogs..FOR FUN...people here, now in OUR reality ARE assholes, who DO absolutely beat up random strangers for no reason (They're hitting people with bike locks and pulling elderly people out of cars just for wearing a hat they don't like) who harass strangers and who will absolute start shit just so they have an excuse to fight with some one.."No one would kill you for wearing a red shirt"....except in L.A where I've been shot at for being in the wrong part of town....(What about the police officers shot for just sitting in their cars simply for being police officers?) the point is EVERYTHING that happens to Arthur, the sign jumping, the guys on the subway, being made fun of on TV (Tosh.0, multiple late night with-) right down to treating terrible people as celebrities.... it happens right now, to people every day...so what about any of it is unrealistic?

    • @Soridan
      @Soridan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +164

      Even when you cite real life examples of worse things happening for no reason to people they claim it's unrealistic that all of these happened to him.
      He's "conveniently" unfortunate.
      But things like that happen. Some people have exceedingly bad days or even lives that just keep piling more and more misery.
      Hell, there's the case of Roy Sullivan who was hit by lightning seven times, survived all of them and people started avoiding him for fear of getting struck by lightning.
      Reads like some anime side character or cartoon villain origin story, doesn't it. He isn't even close to being the most unfortunate man documented though.
      Unlikely doesn't mean impossible and the unlikely is likely to be what makes a good story.

    I think it's actually pretty obvious what happened with Ralph here. His criticisms are so superficial and he gets so many things wrong about the movie because he quite obviously didn't rewatch it for this review. The only reason he wouldn't do that is because he became so bitter and cynical about the movie, which probably came about because of how many people were haranguing him to review it while he wanted to do other things. Saying things like "it's a superhero film" and "it's supposed to be connected to the DCEU" can only happen if you literally don't remember a swathe of details from the film. So he came to hate the movie in the abstract because people wouldn't leave him alone about it, so he didn't rewatch it and instead slapped together this supremely shallow, spiteful video. This is most definitely the lowest low his content has ever hit.

    This is like watching a GDELB using elements from the worst of the bad takes on Joker.
    It's no wonder the EFAP crew genuinely thought this might be a parody video. He either lies about or is maliciously obtuse about details to make the story/characters look worse, he calls it a ripoff of The King of Comedy/Taxi Driver while showing 'Wikipedia synopsis' level understanding of either film (he even said Rupert PUPKIN's name wrong, and that was a _recurring_ _joke_ in the film), and he sneers at it for being based on a comic book. The list goes on, and the EFAP crew pointed pretty much all of them out when they happened.
    When Quinton claimed that Rag'[_+s said that a movie is objectively without value if it sells toys, it was comical how obviously he was lying. Not just because of how easy it was to prove him wrong (the real clip played right beforehand), but because it sounded strange that Rag'/?=-s would say something so clearly wrong and stupid.
    But...damn. Here comes ralphthemoviemaker throwing out that "This Film Is An Unoriginal, Corporate Product", and it only succeeded because it had the Batman/Joker label attached to it. He directly cites its major studio backing and the profit it turned as evidence towards its lack of originality and artistic integrity. He practically writes out a bitter manifesto against the film and major studios in general.
    This is just bizarre. I wouldn't call myself a fan of Ralph's work, but generally what I've seen I thought was pretty good. But this? This is just awful.

      Au contraire. The glass, on the PHONEBOOTH, is a metaphor for Arthur’s ability to communicate with society. Due to miscommunication, he loses his job, which was his last tether to a regular life in society; when he loses that, he smashes the glass, making the interior truth plain in an exterior way, and also scarring that phonebooth for whomever uses it next; and what does Joker do next? He immediately kills 3 rich assholes regardless of their social standing, which becomes a flashpoint for society as a whole, making the interior truth of systemic class tension into a plain exterior phenomenon of rioting and public outcry. So the glass breaking is a microcosm of everything Joker does in the movie; to soil the corpse of what was supposed to help him, and destructively voice his pain in a way that no one can ignore. Also the glass is gay.

    Ralph is just not that intelligent of a critic overall. He is able to analyze the technical elements of a film (mise-en-scene, camera work, lighting, editing) very well, but when it comes to the script and actual writing of the narrative, he is shallow most of the time. He is the typical film degree critic who gatekeeps and is really only knowledgable when it comes to the techniques. But as far as storytelling goes, is excessively mediocre and not reliable. The most annoying example being Patric Willems with his fucking condescending lessons like when he talks to his audience like children when he brings up continuity editing in Battleship Potemkin, which is fucking entry level shit you learn in your first semester earning a film degree.
    Ralph is similar, but his pretension is flat out stated in his actual scripts/monologues as seen with this video.
    I used to watch Ralph, but once I realized that he is shit when it comes to actual storytelling and writing, I stopped. He seems to value only subtlety like having subtlety in thematic elements is the one true key to quality entertainment. I wouldn't be surprised if he hated Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films because they're "silly fantasy movies that aren't subtle like the works of Frederico Fellini." He really comes off as a kid fresh out of film school with a chip on his shoulder who looks down on the plebian movie goers. I personally have a minor in film, and was in classes with people like him for years.

    • @SefniVinalonn
      @SefniVinalonn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@xxsilentreatmentxx Exactly. He also apparently doesn't know that stories aren't completely about rooting for someone. You can be emotionally affected by a character and fascinated by them without actually rooting for them or their actions. My favorite example being Light Yagami from the Death Note manga and anime. I actually rooted for L because I thought he was more impressive since he only had human means to solve the case versus Light's Shinigami magic. However, Light is an amazing character and protagonist that I enjoyed every moment of following as he fascinated me to no end and I was heavily invested in seeing where his story headed and how it may conclude. Death Note just wouldn't work as well with L, the more morally laudable character, as the protagonist. This concept is at the heart of storytelling and characterization, narratives aren't just rooting for a character like a sports team.

I also own the complete Avatar: The Last Airbender series on dvd and I am not even slightly interested in the soon to be shitty live action Netflix version incoming. I too deeply enjoyed the climax of the film for this reason. Murray isn't one-dimensional and honestly I could see his point of view. A lot of people like to paint him as this big asshole like Thomas Wayne, but it isn't so simple as it turns out.
    Yes, he ridiculed Arthur on television, which was no doubt a bad character move. But you see as soon as Joker meets Murray that he's just doing his job, and Murray actually treats Joker very well up until the interview. Murray's assistant scoffs at Joker, and Murray has to tell him to back the fuck off and to respect their guest. Very classy and it didn't come off as phony to me. The phony side of Murray was his showbiz side. Behind the curtain he seems like a very affable and kind man.
    Furthermore, in the interview, Murray is actually the voice of reason, despite his clear disconnect from Arthur's state of mind. Murray can't understand Joker, and that is perhaps a failing, but he's also right: Joker has no right to kill people and laugh about it. It's no laughing matter. But the Joker, of course, is so far gone his new, hellish point of view is crystallized: it is a laughing matter and he can prove it. Then BAM.
    It's so fucking good, and something of a prelude to Batman and the Joker's relationship. They simply cannot reconcile, and will not stop until the other is defeated and proven wrong.

      whats really annoying is when stuff like this happens unintentionally. Dr Casper and Trench in the game Control get routinely shit on towards the end of the game, despite Casper doing basically everything right and Trench having a very good reason for acting how he did. Without spoiling much (because you really should play it) the FBC contains a kid who was exposed to an anomaly and basically has super powers, despite the circumstances Casper tries like hell to make sure the kid is as well off as he can be given the circumstances. (which, granted, still isn't great, but you also can't exactly let a highly traumatized teenager with superpowers just roam out in the world, they DO need special care, care that only the FBC could provide. And, even if we ignore that, it's not Casper who is saying the kid needs to be contained, meanwhile it IS Casper who tries to look after the kid as much as possible after he is contained)
      I really love the game but the protagonist's attitude towards Casper and Trench really does just piss me off.

He comes out and claims that the movie is a shallow, corporate product. *His critiques are then tailored to match this manufactured premise.* It's a conceptual straw man that's very easy to miss, but he says the movie is superficial and simple, and then makes all sorts of simple, superficial criticisms. He doesn't examine clips or give arguments to prove his points with any depth because according to his straw man premise, there's nothing deeper to analyze. I actually realized something interesting about Ralph while watching his review of The Joker. He isn’t a good film critic. He’s a great comedian. I mean, think about it. What’s your favorite Ralphthemoviemaker video? For most people, it’s going to be Mystery Diners, Bigfoot, Ghost Shows, Suicide Squad. The reason these reviews are so much better than the Joker review, is because it’s so obvious why the other subjects are bad, that you don’t even have to be good at film criticism to explain it. What made Ralph so great wasn’t that he made a really in depth interesting video about fucking Bigfoot Shows. It’s that he was funny in those videos, and you could tell he put a lot into them. One of the problems with the Joker review, is the fact that he put in zero effort, and it was marginally less funny than the other work he’s put out. He didn’t care, something he states throughout the video, and it makes me question why he made it in the first place. It’s this combination of lack of effort and lack of proper critique that really fucks him over. At least if this video had been as entertaining as his older ones, I wouldn’t have turned it off halfway in. I hope Ralph just takes a break and comes back as his old self, because watching his Joker review was just sad.

      Wait,wait,wait was he ever funny? I always thought it's the other way around, horrible comedian, but goodish movie critic. Sleepless and Nine lives are pretty much an example of the comedy, repeating one or similar clips thoughout the video, have an over the top reaction to a scene and making a terrible skit at the end. When I saw the mystery diners video I laught more on the show itself instead of what Ralph added. The Gotti video to me would be an example of his interesting critism. So again I am genuinly interested if this guy was ever funny? Considering how tiring some of his videos are.

The big thing that they pushed is "But, Therefore" Meaning that each action should be either contrary to, or in reaction to, an action. So Joker is working with a sign, but it is taken by kids, therefore he is afraid and on a final warning, but his friend gives him a gun for protection, therefore he gets fired, but he is attacked on a subway, therefore he fights back with it.... etc. etc. etc.

    Just because a character isn't relatable to you, or because they possess characteristics that aren't normal does not make them inhuman. In fact, that's the point. There are people out there who are like that, who are socially distant, who do not function normally. Taxi Driver depicts who someone like this, who is unstable and capable of doing reckless, abnormal things could be the person behind both heroes and villains.

      Taxi Driver has only become more relevant in a world of mass shootings. It feels like Scorsese predicted stuff like Mark David Chapman, and there's also the catcher in the rye connection. Travis has a lot in common with Holden Caulfield. Isolated from others and living in the fantasies of his mind. Travis is a racist and slowly descends into a full-blown psycho by the end of the movie. What I always found so compelling was watching that process unfold in a setting that feels like hell on earth. There's actually a lot of people like Travis, and they are very dangerous because they lose their grasp on reality. In my own personal experience, I've met dozens of people who can't hold conversations and just "hang around" people at work.
      Humanity is not dictated by your skills as a conversationalist.

It's odd to me why he made this video as it's inconsistent with even his more negative videos, the two theories of him being pressured because he was berated for liking the Joker and that he was drunk when he made it holds some weight. I don't understand why he has kept it up or not addressed why he made the video as is. Especially since he went back to his normal content afterwards.

    You're not supposed to relate to Travis Bickle. Who even made this claim? He is a blank guy, a weirdo, self-pitying creep etc. Some people like him exist and Taxi Driver is showing what could happen with that kind of person, from where these political assassins or similar figures come from. The movie presents the character in a neutral way, it's stays subtle and doesn't force the viewer to either hate him or sympathise with him and leaves his motivations to interpretation. The filmmakers weren't on his side and that's clear from various interviews but they weren't fully demonizing him either. Joker on the other hand, though it has its great subtler parts and audience engaging ambiguousness, is too on the nose sometimes. It's a different story and a different character but the movie tries too hard to make you feel sorry for Arthur. I wish creators knew where to draw a line when it comes to exposition level too. The main character shouting out the movie's thesis in a pivotal scene and that unnecessary flashbacks spelling out that the neighbour wasn't real are good examples of 'too much'. I still think that Joker is a fantastic film with interesting concept done in a distinctive and compelling style and contrary to some opinions - it's not dumb or pointless, it's way smarter than some movie snobs (not all the people that have some knowledge on movies - it did well with critics outside USA and won The Golden Lion) and film twitter want it to be but that's another story. On the Joker vs Taxi Driver - I liked both, one did better with certain aspects, the other did better with different ones.

    • @Tkn5648
      @Tkn5648 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Taxi Driver does not present Travis Bickle in a neutral way. It is literally an expressionist piece, meaning it is entirely subjective and all we are presented with are Travis' point of view. The relatability element comes in when Travis' environment is pitted against him. There are countless scenes of thiefs, sex workers and pimps doing absolutely repellent things roaming around the streets of New York and that is where you empathise with Travis, he is trapped in hell with no friends, family or lover. As for the pacing, on multiple rewatches, every scene in the film contributes to the overall substance in adding to the atmosphere of the repulsive streets of New York or furthers Travis' motivation although some of those can and will go over your head on first viewing (like how Travis watches the romance drama TV program and relates it to his inability to be comfortable around women (Betsy)) and the immaculate Hermann score as well as the sublime cinematography give the film a unique, recognizable and gripping atmosphere (although that is a subjective assessment, I felt the need to include it to explain how it makes the long draging scenes that the crew complained about actually quite engaging. As far as the big writing complaint on Travis' unexplained motivation for wanting to kill Palantine, it can be explained in various ways. For one he is a sexual rival of his, as Palantine is described by Betsy as a desirable man and although Travis may have not heard this bit of dialogue but there are various scenes of him getting acquainted with Palantine's character through television. The film also makes it clear that Travis comes from a religious background and he sees New York City as a sort of hell filled with sin and his view of Betsy, a blonde dressing in exclusively white clothes, is one of an Angel, a symbol of purity that he must free from the City's grasp and Palantine is the one whom Betsy is linked to. There is also another argument that I read about that can also alter your perspective of Travis' motivation for killing Palantine regarding anti-imperialism views that you can find here : cineprism.wordpress.com/2007/12/11/embedded-the-anti-imperialism-in-taxi-driver/. I had originally intended this to be a reply to your comment but I ended up adressing some of Rags' criticisms about the writing and pacing of the film as well as what makes Travis Bickle relatable (not likeable !). I do understand the criticisms as Taxi Driver can be a tedious first watch, I wasn't huge on it myself, but after gaining a sufficient understanding of the script, Taxi Driver becomes one of the most rewatchable picture I've ever seen. Its status as one of the greatest movies of the 70s and the greatest first person character study is absolutely justified and, while Joker was a very well done film, I think it's unfair to compare it to Taxi Driver.

    The obvious bias Ralph is showing against Joker is due to the fact that it made a ton of money. I don't know the exact numbers but there is no doubt in my mind that during the time Joker was in theatres, it made more money than King of Comedy and Taxi Driver combined. And because he likes those films more than Joker, he felt the need to go on a crusade against the film. That is the only reason I can find to explain the childish temper tantrums he throws randomly throughout the video as well as literally making up themes and plot points within the movie that are obviously false and also building 100 metre tall strawmen left, right and centre. His video is filled with salt.

      @vns P I don’t even think he likes those films more than Joker.
      He just didn’t like Joker and need to prove what a -cunty snob- film connoisseur he is and reference the movies no one would know about unless Todd Philips had said he was inspired by them, so people would know he’s seen the real films, not the cheap, modern knockoff with money and no soul.

      @@Longshanks1690 I can see that being the case as well yeah. I'd like to give people the benefit of the doubt though. I haven't seen Ralph being involved in any other controversies so I guess I didn't want to go that far.

      Christopher Marlowe eh that’s not accurate, YMS didn’t say he bangs animals. His words were along the lines of “if other people want to, and it doesn’t hurt the animal then it should be fine”. Yeah that’s still pretty weird but don’t exaggerate the truth

    Literature Devil brings up Romeo and Juliet for how you can know how a movie ends without that detracting from the story, without pointing out: it literally opens with someone explaining how they die at the end.

      Just to add on: Every Greek tragedy opens with the chorus telling you how the story ends. (The interest is in how you get there.) It’s actually a defining characteristic of Greek tragedies

    This is the first time in my life that I heard ANYONE have anything negative to say about Taxi Driver. I felt exactly the way Mauler and Rags described what they felt. Every word mirrors how I felt. So many people call it their favorite movie. Three guys made me sit through this damn thing, each on a date, because they wanted to see it again so much and I wanted to please them. Each time, I hated it. And I thought there was something wrong or stupid about me that I didn't "get it." Then I thought maybe it was a movie only guys could appreciate - but is there such a thing?? I thought they would think I was a "dopey chick" for not idolizing it so I kept my mouth shut. It was SO SATISFYING to hear this. Thank you guys so much!! I love you RAGS and MAULER - you are my hero's!!

    It's honestly been a while since I've seen a Ralp review, but I don't recall them ever being so...depressing? Heck, it doesn't even feel like Ralph, tbh, or maybe his older stuff was similar, but because the targets were films most people hated or thought were not great, they didn't feel as bad.
    I wonder what happened that convinced him that the film was not great at all? Like him bringing up old films that are recognized as the "Golden Standard" for cinema is just him showing off that he went to film school and that Hollywood thinks old films that revolutionized the medium can hold up in today's market, despite film evolving beyond what the standards were back in the 60's. I really hope Sardonicast isn't turning him into a cynical person.
