    Lovely item. My late uncle own an antique vasculum, and he actually used it for its intended purpose. His was quite large an tubular, with a strap to hang round his shoulder.

    What an interesting video! Thank you so much.
    I had seen a couple of these tins before (some with a leather shoulder strap) but I had no idea what the purpose might be. My wild guess would have been for draughtsmens’ or surveyors’ equipment. Now the mystery is solved!
    As an aside, pocket toleware items for travel must have once been so cheap, practical and in widespread use. I would liken it to the Tupperware of its time. I have a small 19th century nutmeg grater and a late 18th century tinder box (which still retains its original steel, flint and wool), both in toleware. The tinder box is flat, oval and slips easily into the pocket. It has a small brass catch to ensure it stays shut. Larger spice boxes in toleware seem to be very easy to find online, but these smaller items appear to be much rarer.

    I tought it was for cigars
