I've always noticed this about rail corridors too. Rail corridors carrying hundreds of thousands of people usually look pretty "empty" versus a highway that looks full but carries far less people. It just shows how inefficient SOVs are
If there's a traffic jam, the bottleneck is usually not the congested road itself, but rather a bottleneck ahead, for example a traffic light. The bus lane in the case doesn't actually make traffic slower, because the bottleneck is still the same; it just gives the bus priority, which incentivises people to take the bus instead of the car, thereby reducing the wait time before the bottleneck for everyone.
It’s not so much the bus lane being “empty” as it is an indictment of how inefficient cars are for city travel/commuting. They take up so much space and individual people’s bad driving can have HUGE effects on everyone else’s commutes
0:56 that cycle lane (if widened or twinned going the other direction) can replace a 6 lane freeway full of cars (for distances reasonable to cycle). Video does not get into numbers: Car lane; 2000 passengers/hour (assuming 1.5 people per car) Bus lane: 9000 passengers/hour Cycle track: 12,000 passengers/hour.
1. Please get rid of the one on Dewdney Trunk WB @ Lougheed Hwy. It makes no sense as it becomes not a bus lane on the Staples side. 2. All Bus Only lanes should be painted that red/pink colour. I've seen idiot drivers in Pitt Meadows and @ Commercial-Broadway where the 99 B-Line stops use it just to pass a few cars.
This is truly comical. Why the TH-cam algorithm recommended this I have no idea. But I needed a laugh. Yes, we shut a whole lane so a few buses can drive down it now and again. What a jolly good idea.
But when the bus lane has 1 bus route that runs every 20 minutes and one that runs every 30 on a busy road and the buses are terribly routed so only the very desperate take them (you know who you are)
What about the bus lane for the 351/2/3/4 to and from Bridgeport? There's only like 1 bus every 30mins.... why not make it both cars and buses for that bus lane to white Rock

Yep. You can fit 300 people on just one small six-car train, which takes up a heck of a lot less space than 300 (or even 150) cars.
im glad translink takes their time to educate people who wouldn’t understood the reason for it otherwise
Yes absolutely! Every hour when buses are stuck in traffic is an hour when the city grinds to a halt. Let's keep Vancouver moving!
if there was a bus lane from maple ridge to coquitlam central it would probably shave about 25 minutes off the trip there during rush hour.
Amen, that route can be painful. but of course bike & bus lanes are the new culture war distraction 🥴
Don't tell this to Doug Ford, he will have a heart attack.
Need this on every Trolleybus line.

More bus lanes please!!
Glad they said it!
Desperately need them on the 25 route.
Yesss! Or some parallel route. 16th or Grandview.
Excellent video! More of this TransLink!
Short and sweet, direct to the point. Good stuff.

People who make that argument stopped listening the moment you showed math. That's the unfortunate truth
i love translink
This feels like a PSA for Ontario

Bus lanes look empty BECAUSE they’re efficient. If lanes are full of bumper-to-bumper traffic, that’s proof of their inefficiency.
nice

I’m assuming you stopped watching at 0:24

Excuse me? I rely on this bus, and the bus lane helps ensure it doesn't get stuck in traffic, especially during rush hour.
Please watch the video. Thanks.
