The Birds I found in Costa Rica!

  • Costa Rica is internationally known as vacation paradise and this is absolutely true! Even more for a birder and nature enthusiastic. The official list of Costa Rica's avifauna has staggering 903 species! This is almost a miracle for such a small country. The fact is that Costa Rica and Central America work as a bridge between two major land masses, North and South America. Millions of birds of at least 200 species do migrate twice a year. Birds mostly from North and South America but some go as far as New Zeland!
Geological and geographical features of this tiny country helps the diversification of flora and fauna even more. A beautiful chain of mountains form cordilleras that divide the country mostly in two, E and W. So animals and plants from each side of the mountain had different evolutionary forces. So the great diversity of habitats makes a perfect scenario for an explosion of life forms.
If you are new to birdwatching and nature photography I strongly recommend good binoculars and good cameras. There are many binoculars of bad quality that can ruin your eyesight over time.
It is true that some binoculars are very expensive. But as a beginner you don't need them, you can have a much cheaper one that will definitely blow your mind as soon as you get your first cool bird in front of you!
Here I recommend one 8x42 and another one 10x42 (magnification x front lens size). Both are Bushnell a very traditional brand:

If you are an experienced birder I recommend an awesome Zeiss Terra that will blow you mind:

For Wildlife Photography the best camera in my opinion is the Super Zoom Nikon P900 and P1000:
    amzn.to/38BpNIR
    amzn.to/3ttRwDF
If you are planning to come to Costa Rica I recommend 2 very good field guides.

Well done! My favorite is Lanceolated Monklet, which is a most-wanted bird. Great views of Three-wattled Bellbird are also right up there at the top of my list.

Tks Mary Ann! Yes the Monklet is a prize. What an unpredictable bird I'd say... I've never seen it here in Brazil. The Bellbird was a super lifer no doubt. I was so glad that I brought my tripod that day! :)

If your going to Costa Rica to see the three watt led bellbird I recommend going to MonteVerde. In from may to June after COVID obviously, because from may to June it’s their breeding season and they go to monte verde.

Beautifully done! Thank you for sharing! I will show this to my classes as we are studying birds of Costa Rica and I like yours better than professional ones because it's short enough to hold interest but long enough to get a real understanding of the birds there. I also appreciate you naming the birds as other videos did not which was a big disappointment of mine!
