Heads up! We've started a new channel for all things tractors, firewood and other projects. Subscribe here: th-cam.com/channels/Pmos-Vu8QFlp3lXkQ38hfQ.html ... The Woods Tree Farm channel will focus more on christmas tree farming and agribusiness going forward.
As a general rule, I watch a video on the heavy equipment I'm renting before I get it from the store. Usually only takes 30 minutes or less, you'll hit the ground running. Thanks for the vid.
A couple of tips: First, lube the rail that the ram rides on with a small bit of oil. Second, save yer back! Position the splitter right next to the side of the splitter that you will stand on. That way you can reach around, pick up a round, split it and toss to other side of machine. You spent a lot of time walking going to get your rounds! Back and forth...save all of that. Also, get someone to assist by having them either run the splitter and you bring the wood or vice versa. You will get 4 times as much work done as you did by yourself. Also, if you do not want to leave the wood there, bring a trailer with your tractor and toss directly into there, then when trailer is full...its a good break time to take it and stack it somewhere, do not leave it laying on the ground as it will not dry effectively. Best of luck and once you got it started it seemed to run fine! HA HA
Good tips. I filmed this a couple years ago at this point and like I stated in the video it was my first time running a splitter. Since then I've moved into selling a bit of firewood. Last year I bought a commercial splitter and cover more of the firewood business on my other channel, Flat Creek Outdoors. Thanks for watching!
Phil! Looking good! Hahah look what I found lol directions! That was awesome lol I am also surprised HD lent that out with the busted ram head. I like how you admitted you never used one before instead of pretending to be a wood splitting hero! its good to be transparent! People appreciate that!
Thanks, as always Jay. I don't have the need for nearly as much firewood as you, but I'll be renting once a year or so to replenish the pile for the fire pit
Not to be too picky, but I think you should be wearing gloves and eye protection in addition to your earplugs. Wood splinters can be nasty. Safety first.
I think you never operated one of these before....they work pretty slow so the wood does not explode off of the machine! But , yes, he should wear gloves....to protect him from wood splinters!
That is worth renting if you don't use it much. That is what I did in the past, but with near 6-7 cord (18-21 face cord), it became a marathon each year to do it in one single weekend, relying on the weather. This is where I decided to build my own and take it relax. At first, I thought you might have the hydraulic lever engaged. Which makes the engine very difficult to start. But like DeHaven said, most likely the carburetor got messed from bouncing and flooded the engine. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing. Next time I'll check the hyd lever. I don't need much wood. Just for outdoor recreational fires. I might consider selling some firewood in the future since this experience went so well
Awesome! Always good to see a local here on YT. We're in the middle of fall fest right now. Come out to the farm 10-5 tomorrow to say hi. Details at woodstreefarm.com
You flooded the engine on intial attempts. Once you do that, turn choke off and keep pulling til start. Then if needed restart the correct starting process.!
Good move. You probably know already but when u see the thick grey cloud once it starts its telling you it was flooded. Wanted to mention that for the novices that might be watching, i see that all the time and still have to train my guys not to do that. Thanks for the video, i needed this exact display of tool.
Rents a machine to save time.....wrestles with wood to pull apart....dude turn the log and split it again until it stats falling apart....the machine will tare the grain not you
I am always amazed when complete novices make a video of their first attempt, to post on TH-cam. You never explained why you had horrible troubles getting the engine started. Did you forget to open the gas? Did you switch the system from off to on? Did you choke it properly? If you words about what you learned from that experience, and how you would do it in the future, it would be a truely educational video. I was amazed that you were not wearing gloves as you were splitting the wood. Anyone who has split much wood will certainly be wearing gloves to protect from splinters. I appreciate that you took the time to video, but hope if you make another "how to" video, that you will have mastered your subject first.
I guess you're new to my channel. I have very few how-to videos. This particular video is not labeled as a how to, sorry you interpreted it as such. Most of my videos are simply sharing my experiences, and yes that comes from the perspective of a novice in many cases. Thanks for watching though, and hope to see you around the channel more often. Take care!
Haha. Yeah it wasn't fast. That's part of the reason I've been splitting by hand in recent videos. The other reason is I'm cheap. Thanks for the comment!
Its a big improvement over there Baretta 20 ton which ive used. Its painfully slow. Id be somewhat happy with this toro's speed. Still wont buy either one tho!
Seems like maybe you're new to our channel. Yes, this is all new to us. When this video was filmed, we had our property less than 1 year and previously had zero experience with any of this kind of stuff. Hope to see you around the channel more in the future! Take care!

cant hardly beat a log splitter. always start the rental machine at the rental place before you leave with it. learned that the hard way.
definitely will do that next time!
Trying to pull the logs apart while standing next to a running log splitter. You sure showed that log splitter who's boss. 😂

Also spray some lube on that splitter head a few times during operation!

Thanks, I appreciate it!

How much to rent for the day?

Thanks for posting this I was looking at renting one in this weekend
Good video, laughed out loud when I saw “pondering decision to rent from Home Depot”.
haha. This video was a while ago. I forgot I did that. Glad you enjoyed it.

I'm planning on renting one soon, I guess I'll have them start it for me before I leave HD just to be safe. Thanks for the video.
good idea
Looks like you got the hang of it!! My guess is the carburetor got messed up from bouncing down the road, and that's why it gave you trouble starting.
I'm surprised this didn't have a 2 lever/button safety system...making you unable to put hand in front of ram while moving
I'm glad it didn't. That would be annoying to operate. It doesn't take much common sense to operate one of these and keep your hands out of the way.
Does the wood need to be green or can it be a few weeks since you cut the tree
you can split wood anytime.
Great job !
Thanks a lot! Appreciate you watching
This is why I always have a can of starting fluid around It makes starting whole lot easier…
I'm a little surprised that HD sent that splitter out with such a damaged head.
Does anyone know if this wood splitter can split 2 year seasoned wood? I have big round pieces of oak that are too heavy to carry.
Shouldn't have any trouble with it. In my experience oak splits pretty easily.
Thank you so much!!
Turn the machine up and use vertically, that way you do not have to lift those heavy rounds!
Great video. Glad I found your channel. Also from Amelia, VA! Good work, keep them coming!

Wow. Never know what your'e going to get when you rent but it looks like it got the job done.
Yeah, this worked out quite well. Thanks for watching!
You flooded the engine on intial attempts. Once you do that, turn choke off and keep pulling til start. Then if needed restart the correct starting process.!
Realized that which is why I cut the fuel off too until it started.

you had flooded it

has to be one of the slowest splitters i have ever seen

@@WoodsTreeFarm sorry about that I should have checked first. now that I know I will!!!
@@WoodsTreeFarm for one year experience you didn't do half bad lol
Why did you feel the need to run your mouth for 45 minutes this could have taken a 1 minute video
You watched my 9 minute video for 45 mins?! Thanks! 😂
@@WoodsTreeFarm time is very relative
Dude, he is a complete novice, at wood splitting with a gas woodsplitter and at making UTube videos. Cut him some slack!
