Following international recognition of Fado, Portugal recentlFollowing international recognition of Fado, Portugal recently submitted to UNESCO the polyphonic songs of the Alentejo, known as Cante Alentejano, or just Cante, as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This film will be a journey into the hot Alentejo countryside (Southern region of Portugal) discovering Cante music and the life of its performers.
Not many people outside Portugal know about these a capella polyphonic choirs, typically formed by 20 to 30 male agricultural workers or miners, that seem to express the deep voice of the Earth.

With the international recognition of Cante by UNESCO (2014), the conflict between tradition and modernity is getting very strong. What does this regional musical tradition mean nowadays and for whom? Is it still possible for a regional expression to survive under the pressure of mass cultural globalization? Do the new generations find a feeling of belonging in this culture? Can some modern versions of Cante be accepted by the representatives of the original tradition?

Alentejo, Sul de Portugal. Dezenas de grupos amadores reúnem-se regularmente para ensaiar antigos cantos polifónicos e para improvisar modas sobre o tempo presente. Isto é o cante.

This is «cante». Born in the taverns and in the fields, sung by miners and peasants, «cante» was transmitted from generation to generation.

Passa-se a ideia de que o Cante Alentejano apenas se canta no baixo Alentejo, nada disso... canta-se muito também na região mais alta e central do Alentejo. Sei disso por experiência.
