This is one of very few examples where the live version trumps the studio cut. This is Elton John's MASTERPIECE. His music is perfectly blended with Taupin's lyrics, and the lush arrangement, with full orchestra, brings me to tears from the very start. I never tire of listening to this.
I have to completely agree. As much As I love this song, there’s nothing like this live recording in Sydney. I’ve seen it live elsewhere. This is still the best
Brings me to tears every time, those last three repeated lines. We have the CD album of this concert and I reckon it's the best live album ever. Our 12yo son loves it too.
Correct. I was at this show in Melbourne in 1987. I still have the ticket stub. Unfortunately the indoor venue was rubbish. The second half of the show was why I was put on earth. I'll never see or hear a show like that again. And this song is the highlight of the evening. It was also the first time I'd ever heard the song. He could never write another thing and I wouldn't care. Pure beauty.
I was at one of these shows in Sydney in 1986. I rushed out the next morning and bought "Elton John". What a phenomenal album. I'd never heard this song or Sixty Years On.
Elton played this at a solo show in Denver I attended three months before my daughter was born. It made me think of how much my son was looking forward to the arrival of his little sister. I was in tears for most of the song.
This entire concert itself is an absolute MASTERPIECE!! The arrangement, vocals and sound are just incredibly amazing to me! This is my favorite Elton concert of all. (Second is MSG 1974.) this song makes me cry tears of joy and that is the power of Elton’s Music... Phillip, AMAZING job in making the quality of this concert amazing!
I was there that night, and even after seeing many, many other concerts, this is till the most impressive. I especially liked the second half with the MSO, not to mention conducted by James Newton Howard.
Agree! This album which I purchased on cassette during my senior year of high school, I think- is one of the greatest albums ever imo. I've since added this gem on cd. And the backstory leading up to this recording just adds that extra to the recording. I see that this version is not the version on the album- from an earlier or later show on that 86 Melbourne tour, perhaps? The longer spoken intro gives that away. I still remember the quote on the liner notes stating that " No Overdubs Were Used On This Recording" & I've always thought maybe that explains how every instrument from EJ's lead vocals to that unbelievable Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is captured. A perfect album! Think I'm going to play this on the weekend.
I actually cannot sit down at the piano and play/sing this song. I get about halfway and cannot hold back tears. Every time. Gotta do it drunk maybe (or perhaps that'll be worse).
Peering out of tiny eyes The grubby hands that gripped the rail Wiped the window clean of frost As the morning air laid on the latch A whistle awakened someone there Next door to the nursery, just down the hall A strange new sound you never heard before A strange new sound that makes boys explore Tread neat so small those little feet Amid the morning his small heart beats So much excitement yesterday That must be rewarded, must be displayed Large hands lift him through the air Excited eyes contain him there The eyes of those he loves and knows But what's this extra bed just here His puzzled head tipped to one side Amazement swims in those bright green eyes Glancing down upon this thing That make strange sounds, strange sounds that sing In those silent happy seconds That surround the sound of this event A parent smile is made in moments They have made for you a friend And all you ever learned from them Until you grew much older Did not compare with when they said This is your brand new brother This is your brand new brother This is your brand new brother Traduzir para o português
I lose it every single time I hear this one. It breaks me with it's beauty. The pairing of these lyrics with the music is utter genius. I have never gotten through the whole song without weeping. That's true art. As much as I enjoy this live version, for me the studio version always elicits SO SO SO much more emotion. It's the strings in the studio version...more present I think...I want more of them in this live version.
Thanks to temperamental radio and disc jockey i never had the opportunity to hear this beautiful song until now. A wonderful discovery❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I think Eltons croaky voice actually gives this recording a raw power that a studio could never give. I believe he had surgery on his throat shortly after this tour
Thanks a bunch for posting the EJ live with the Melbourne Sympathy Orchestra. It went on sale in the fall of 1987 & it’s still timeless today right here & now! Thanks for the great effort catching all of the instruments & audio perfectly!
Thank you so much Philip for uploading these exquisite cuts. The audio album has been an all-time favorite of mine since it came out...it was only recently that I started looking for a video. And here you are. Your sound is excellent.
Think on this, at the beginning of this video Elton states that Bernie wrote this when he was 16 or 17 years old........... A true savant not just a good lyricist
Even though the operation was done after the tour, he was told that he needed to have the operation before the tour. So Elton made a huge sacrifice by going on with the tour anyway knowing that he risking ending his career by continuing with the tour before having the operation. Thankfully everything worked out ok, but it was a big sacrifice he made.
Elton has said that Bernie shuns the limelight. He prefers to live quietly in the U.S. Elton knows he's blessed to have such a wonderful lyricist & together they produce beautiful songs.
True. Elton practically had to drag Bernie on stage.Elton always gives him credit.Bernie got the best of both worlds. He got his wish to live in the wide open spaces without the burdons of fame. He said himself that he doesn't want to live Elton's life. He's happy.
I had first heard this in 98. My boy who was born in 98, died unexpectedly aged 23 in 2021. Not look for sympathy. Just saying treasure every moment, even when they try your patience and drive you nuts🙂
This concert prompted me to see Elton John live. Unfortunately half way through the show he swallowed an insect and refused to continue. So disappointing.....but this concert must have been spectacular live.

I might put Alan Jay Lerner in that statement...and I'm quite sure Bernie would be flattered to be next Lerner.

Elton John never recorded a "bad" song. I love all his music. But this will always be my favorite!
i want to cry over the beauty of this song. best version

Most beautiful version of this great song.
Love it since elementary school.

In my opinion this concert in 86 represents the peak of Elton John’s career. I grey up with this record. Truly flawless collection.

Peering out of tiny eyes
The grubby hands that gripped the rail
Wiped the window clean of frost
As the morning air laid on the latch
A whistle awakened someone there
Next door to the nursery, just down the hall
A strange new sound you never heard before
A strange new sound that makes boys explore
Tread neat so small those little feet
Amid the morning his small heart beats
So much excitement yesterday
That must be rewarded, must be displayed
Large hands lift him through the air
Excited eyes contain him there
The eyes of those he loves and knows
But what's this extra bed just here
His puzzled head tipped to one side
Amazement swims in those bright green eyes
Glancing down upon this thing
That make strange sounds, strange sounds that sing
In those silent happy seconds
That surround the sound of this event
A parent smile is made in moments
They have made for you a friend
And all you ever learned from them
Until you grew much older
Did not compare with when they said
This is your brand new brother

This tour was right after his operation on his voicestrings (stimmbänder). He said that“ this tour will be a new start or end“
right before
I read he did the whole concert tour & THEN had the vocal operation in Melbourne, Australia after which he was forbidden to sing for 18 months.

What I don't understand why doesn't Bernie taupin doesn't get the credit that he deserves
Bernie taupin songs always seem to tell a story
William bonnstauffer, Elton gives him direct credit for this song, at the outset, and who doesn't know, being a fan, that BT is half of the team?
Yes he does, Elton mentions him all the time saying he wouldn't be there without him. He's praised him numerous times.
