Thanks for sharing man, been looking for some budget zeiss for my a7s3 after getting the 35 2.8, definitely would try this lens BTW do you mind sharing how close can you be when shooting some close up shots? Thanks!
It works reaaally well, just have to remember to change the focal length! I added it to my fn menu and it’s quick to do. All of the handheld stuff has standard / active applied!
Hi, which zeiss mm would you go for to do portraits and product photos, and is there a more budget friendly cam around 1k or less that you'd suggest as well? Like sony a6400
Hmm it really depends, you can use any of those lenses for portraits / product photos. I tend to gravitate towards the 50 / 85 for product, but also my 25, 28 and 35 haha. It really depends on what you want. If you're looking to add lenses, I would go in this order: 28, 50, 85, then add whichever ones you miss. I added the 25 and 35 recently, and may add 100, 135 and 18 For cameras, it depends too. If you're a hobbyist, the a6xxx series is fantastic, the a7c is great as well. 1k or less is a pretty hard spot to get while having a camera worthwhile if that makes sense The bmpcc4k is around 1k, but it's also a "cinematographers" camera- it doesn't have MF, it has bad battery life and it normally takes rigging. I would look into the a7iv, xt4, canon r7, canon m50, a6500. There's a mix of price ranges in there- I would honestly save up for the r7 or the sony a7iv. You'll get more for your money with 10bit codecs, but again it depends on your needs haha
Converting to EF and using an adapter or using an adapter with the native CY mount to E I used the CY to E at first before I committed and since I converted all of them to EF to use on any camera
You should include the full name of each lens in your review, since it's important to know that this lens is a Sonnar design, not a Planar like the 50/1.4, 85/1.4, 100/2 etc. It has a different rendering quality, with insane contrast and a darker look overall. In all respects it is a perfect lens, from the high microcontrast to the tiny form factor, to the sharpness. This is a lens to shoot wide open without a concern in the world. I've never heard this rumour about the build quality... and it is incorrect! I think the only Contax Zeiss with plasticky builds are the Tessar 45/2.8 and Planar 50/1.7. I own the Sonnar 85/2.8 in MMJ and it maintains the high standards of the series. The differences between the models are the ninja star and flaring on the earlier (AEG) model. Personally I prefer having neither! But I am primarily a stills photographer. Trivia: This is essentially the same lens as the Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 90mm f/2.8 made for the Contax G system.
Really clean video. Dig this content. Keep it up, Thomas!
Appreciate it! Plenty more on the way!

course! The minimum focusing distance is around 3.3ft
I’m considering this lens for photography - how much does it weigh roughly?
How well do you find the IBIS works when adapting lenses? Do you dial in the focal length every time?

They are fantastic lenses. Not sure what you were reading, but the 1.4 is definitely made of all metal. Had one for several years.
Oh I’m sure! I wanted to go for the smaller primes myself
Can't believe you like that flare.
Why’s that
What adapter are you using for contax to sony? thx
novoflex EF to E!
Awesome test as always. Can you please put more human subjects in the test as well, like portrait type shots?
Thank you! Yeah I’ll definitely try to add more in, I’ll be making a full video about my kit once it’s finalized, so I’ll have it then!

Im going back between this lens and the 50 1.4 contax ... Already have the 28mm , but love the 50 mm for video
Best move is all 3 haha
the 50 is definitely more used in my kit but that 85 comes in clutch here and there
@@thomas.kovacik Yeah definitely! Love the videos man .. Your channel is very inspirational
How do you adapt these lenses to Sony cameras?
Converting to EF and using an adapter or using an adapter with the native CY mount to E
I used the CY to E at first before I committed and since I converted all of them to EF to use on any camera
@@thomas.kovacikI did the same. All EF mount makes them easily adaptable.
