I can’t believe people don’t like Guts’ crazy face during the Wounds episode. One of my favorite small things about Berserk is how Miura isn’t afraid to make Guts look ugly or completely insane at times.
I think the problem wasn't exactly the face, but the eyes that were making it weird and uncanny More specifically, the movement of the pupils. Guts glancing back and forth has his pupils just snap to the position with no movement. While fast, you can normally still see the movement of the eye slightly. It doesn't just instantly change position, like in the episode. Just my 2 cents
It’s not that he looks ugly it’s more how it was animated. Like in the manga he’s more fearful/worried while in the anime he looks psychotic/uncanny with the eyes.

There was a promotional Memorial Edition interview with one of the script writers where he revealed that they had plans for multiple projects releasing simultaneously for what they called "The Berserk Saga Project", which was 4C's goal to adapt the entire Berserk story. They were originally thinking of beginning with the Black Swordsman Arc but settled on Golden Age because it could set things up for newcomers. Golden Age as ONE long movie was the central point of this multi-project proposal. An OVA series and TV series (presumably sequels) were also planned but those were cancelled and they decided to split the movie into three parts. This all started in 2008 so they might as well have been working on one film that whole time. Regarding Memorial Edition, there were plans to splice the movies into a TV series one year or two after the theatrical release but the director, Toshiyuki Kubooka, was frustrated on how to go about it. It wasn't until 2020 or so when 4C revisited the idea of touching up the animation since the tech used would soon be obsolete with modern software, just in time for the trilogy's 10th anniversary. Kubooka was still hesitant on ruining the theatrical structure until one of the animators who worked on the original trilogy, Yuuta Sano, stepped in with a suggestion and eventually got approval from Kubooka, becoming ME's director. Animations for Puck and Griffith during the new Bonfire of Dreams scene (and the message to Miura after ep 13's credits) are also lifted directly from the initial pilot/pitch trailer used to convince Miura to greenlight the Saga Project, showcasing future scenes like Millennium Falcon Griffith, Black Swordsman Guts fighting some knights, Conviction Casca and Puck.
@@tompaauwe4565 Swordsman is rough to adapt imo. Adapting it as is results in pushing off new people because "Bro just get through the black swordsman arc and then it gets really good bro I swear!" (Because lets be fair, bsa is definitely the weakest Berserk arc and is DEFINITELY the most amateur when it comes to Miura's writing). If you change it around to fix the pacing issues, (sometimes) cringe inducing dialogue, and make Guts more in-line with where he is in the Lost Children mini-chapter, you get the fans of the series clamoring "They changed things around!111! #NotMyBerserk!" I think 2 episodes to black swordsman is plenty; Introduce guts with the bar scene, have him fighting the count's knights (while having a scene that shows the count sticking his daemon into one of the soldiers), get captured, and end episode 1 there. Episode 2 has Puck free Guts, and he immediately goes to fight the count. Teresa is introduced, count is vilified, godhand is called, boom.
I NEED to see Guts and Griffith face off again for realsies before I die. Their meeting on Elfhelm was the emotional buckbreaking of a lifetime, and when Guts "landed a strike" on Griffiths big boi living godking body I was beyond excited. Seriously, I haven't been so excited over a single hair since puberty.
I would suggest Zodd’s prophecy again… Now put into context what Griffith is now. I don’t think Casca cares for Guts the same way she cares for Griffith even after all this time. It’s possible that it’s going to end in a way we can expect: no triumphant return, no conquering the god, no eternal victory. Unless Guts manages to calm himself and find more of a reason to continue outside of this goal. He’s like a dog in a way. He can chase the tire. It once he gets it he doesn’t know what he’s going to do with it.
7:44 As far as I remember reading, the memorial edition was going to happen by celebrating the first release of manga, & 1997's 25 years when it aired (Oct 1), Kentaro Miura's death was something that came out of nowhere, and basically gave the public perception that it was in honor of Kentaro Miura's Death. Regardless, that's the small nickpick, and tragic either way.
The strangest thing about that announcement with a timer is that it was followed by an interview with the creators of the memorial edition where they casually mention that a new berserk anime is in development (that is, yes, a new adaptation is confirmed). And it just doesn't work out in my head to make a website with a timer just for the sake of blu-ray and mention a new anime in an interview. What are these priorities, damn it!

The Golden Age Arc is the Spiderman of Anime. We've seen Spiderman's origin story in different adaptations on screen. The Golden Age Arc is great and impactful part of the main character's story, but it's we've seen 3 times now on the screen. It's like we've been stuck in one spot for almost 3 decades now. I want to watch any other point in Berserk's story on screen. In a clean, traditional 2D, faithful adaptation.
i love berserk. your 21 hour video on it is a comfort video and what i use to help sleep bc i have yet to find someone to capture Berserk in a way j think is authentic to its tone. at least when it should be serious and should be light hearted

Honestly, I expected a bit more from the anime. Still enjoyed the new things they added, but wish there was just a few more tweaks here and there. Still great, I enjoyed it a lot and it was fun watching berserk again. Lets hope that it continues and moves on to other arcs. Thanks for the Vid loli!

i never saw the movies, but i watched the memorial edition after wanting to get into berserk and a friend’s recommendation. i watched it and loved it. I ended up reading the manga and now i am enlightened (up to the very end of millennium falcon so far) Absolutely peak.
I’m definitely gonna check this out. I gotta say, your logic for not making more berserk vids makes sense. More berserk vids are always cool, but spacing them out with pretty good reviews in between makes them all the better when they show up.
Chainsaw Man gets a god tier adaptation with kick ass animation and the best ost I've heard in a long time... And we still can't even get the Lost Children arc.
CSM is also visually simple in its original form compared to Berserk. I guess no studio wants to even try to adapt Berserk properly, because it's way too detailed and they can't (or don't want to) change the artstyle. And when they *do* change it, we get 2016 and 2017.
I honestly think it's due to the success Berserk would have if let's say, Yoshiyaki Kawajiri were to animate and direct an extended OVA series with the guys at Madhouse. It would be too good and corner the anime market too much for the super-powered high schooler and loli lovers who plague the industry. Seriously...
Based, i was waiting for your input in this. Memorial made me finally like and respect the movies, they're really well made. I noticed a lot of aspects that are honestly kino that i had overlooked back then, he OST in the Zodd fight, Ubik's illusion has some of the best visuals and music i've ever witnessed in animation, the whole atmosphere they gave the eclipse after Guts is all that is left of the band is chilling. Femto's piano is legendary. With just a few additions it actually feels like it tells a proper story now and it's crazy how the same old movies work so much better in episodic format. Also i find not actually seeing Guts' backstory but getting a description of it from Wounds pretty interesting, i imagine what someone watching it for the first time might react like.

Tbh I was so let down after that whole countdown stunt that I completely lost interest in the memorial edition and had no interest in checking it out. But goddamn that bonfire of dreams adaptation looks gorgeous, I'll definitely check it out inmediately. I actually did some work for Berserk Redux, and I think the name confusion might be with Fandub of the Hawks, which eventually became Studio Taka, the Berserk motion comic guys (who I also worked with). Might be wrong though, not sure if ApostleBob ever had the Redux go by a different name.
Crazy that not only they brought back the English cast from the 90s anime and Golden Age films, but they legit redid the entire thing to go with the new scenes in terms of dialog. I'd figure all they did was just reuse the movie they already did, but made new voice work done. Only real noticeable change at least from the last installment with the whole gang back in the early 2010s was Ubik's actor didn't come back and was recast. And also Void now sounding more like how he did in the 90s dub.
Officially, "Wish" is now my favorite ending song to any anime. It was a tough tie between "Torches" and "Drown" from Vinland Saga, "Heroes" from MHA (well, best MHA ending at least) or "Chainsaw Blood" from Chainsaw Man; but "Wish" has this melancholic beauty that, despite the Pop stylings of it, hits the idea of Berserk perfectly. It has this tearjerking vibe to it that works so well. Then again, I would've gone with something more like Guts marching through the darkness with his claymore dragging behind him, with the darkness parting along its blade like sand. Y'know, like the ending sequence to Black Lagoon. Even some blood dripping into the shadow with Guts' armor breaking into the sand, with sunlight breaking it near the start of the chorus. Yes, I know how Autistically I'm going into this hypothetical reworking of a fairly decent ending sequence, and I should really not bitch at all; but I do kind of wish they added more melancholy to this instead of seeing Guts, Griffith and Casca breaking into particles and reforming into a Behelit.
Man got through most of the the long takes, can’t wait for more but I don’t know what you haven’t covered. Pretty goddam thorough. Games stuff I’m familiar but only the older Dreamcast and PS2 versions. Might check out the one I’ve heard referenced in your videos.
In a weird way, it feels like Studio 4C is slowly piecing together an "official" definitive adaptation of Berserk whenever they gain a little ground and funding to add more to the franchise. On a similar note, I had no idea that there was a fan project piecing together a more fleshed out version of the series. Though I really shouldn't be surprised. If it's even a moderately popular franchise, this type of thing usually tends to happen.
Honestly, Studio 4C should be given the reins to properly adapt Berserk as an anime, they clearly show a lot of love for the series with them releasing the Memorial edition. Obviously this is all supposedly that they don’t run into budget issues or time restraints like they did with the trilogy. Despite Golden Age Arc’s issues concerning removed content, I feel the trilogy is the best adaptation, but more as an introduction for the manga, as it gives you a brief glimpse into what you’ll expect from the manga without feeling like you gotta devote hours upon hours for an anime season instead.
This is the only series I have enjoyed where every single story point is needed to get the full experience. Every piece of Berserk story Telling is important.
I remember watching the first berserk video and being super hyped for the second, after watching the third I read the whole series through in about a month, so the next two videos were more of a review, but still a welcome one. Can't wait for part six.
Caught the Berserk stuff around part 2 or 3 and have been watching every minute of it since, even both 21 hour videos. Really happy to have more to watch even if it's only a 26 minute video about an arc that's technically been covered. Honestly i didn't realize they put out a memorial edition of anything for Miura and Berserk Awesome 😄👍
Its truly insane to me as a newer Berserk fan, came around in 2017 and got scarred and ran to hide away in the manga for the past 6 years, that it hasnt gotten a proper adaptation past the Golden Age movies/memorial edition. I mean sure Golden age is a solid 1/3 of the material but what about the other 2/3s that have been around for the past 20 years? Sure Berserk handles heavy subject matter and it is a very gatekeepy fandom but even then the fact that the studios that have gotten their hands on the IP have mishandled it so badly just has to be the worst course of events to ever occur for a piece of fiction. Its just crazy to contrast the constant failings of Berserk within the anime industry to the success of JoJo in that they are both old mangas that are both influential and popular worldwide but one has had a proper handling and the other has been fumbled more than a football in a mud bowl.

Love your videos and I had to do a double take during the credit music. I would love to see you do videos on the Legacy of Kain series, they are incredibly underrated games.
I discovered the movies on Netflix knowing nothing about Berserk so I didn’t know what was missing, and thought I got a pretty complete story. I’ve watched them a few more times now, and I’m currently through eight volumes of the deluxe edition mangas which each have three regular volumes in them. So I might be backwards but the movies got me to read the manga.
I dont care about CGI quality half as much as other people do, but its still mind blowing to me that Berserk still doesnt have the adaptation it deserves. Like, how big anime studios like Ufotable or Mappa have not picked this series to completely adapt yet? Berserk is so well known and inspired hundred of other series, not just in japan but in the west as well, and yet nobody tries to fully and properly animate it.

The Golden Age Arc is great and impactful part of the main character's story, but it's we've seen 3 times now on the screen. It's like we've been stuck in one spot for almost 3 decades now. I want to watch any other point in Berserk's story on screen. In a clean, traditional 2D, faithful adaptation.

Honestly, I expected a bit more from the anime. Still enjoyed the new things they added, but wish there was just a few more tweaks here and there. Still great, I enjoyed it a lot and it was fun watching berserk again. Lets hope that it continues and moves on to other arcs. Thanks for the Vid loli!

i never saw the movies, but i watched the memorial edition after wanting to get into berserk and a friend’s recommendation. i watched it and loved it. I ended up reading the manga and now i am enlightened (up to the very end of millennium falcon so far) Absolutely peak.
That opening. Good hell I don’t know how but it fits perfect with Berserk.
I’m definitely gonna check this out. I gotta say, your logic for not making more berserk vids makes sense. More berserk vids are always cool, but spacing them out with pretty good reviews in between makes them all the better when they show up.

CSM is also visually simple in its original form compared to Berserk. I guess no studio wants to even try to adapt Berserk properly, because it's way too detailed and they can't (or don't want to) change the artstyle. And when they *do* change it, we get 2016 and 2017.

I honestly think it's due to the success Berserk would have if let's say, Yoshiyaki Kawajiri were to animate and direct an extended OVA series with the guys at Madhouse. It would be too good and corner the anime market too much for the super-powered high schooler and loli lovers who plague the industry.

Memorial made me finally like and respect the movies, they're really well made. I noticed a lot of aspects that are honestly kino that i had overlooked back then, he OST in the Zodd fight, Ubik's illusion has some of the best visuals and music i've ever witnessed in animation, the whole atmosphere they gave the eclipse after Guts is all that is left of the band is chilling. Femto's piano is legendary.
With just a few additions it actually feels like it tells a proper story now and it's crazy how the same old movies work so much better in episodic format.
Also i find not actually seeing Guts' backstory but getting a description of it from Wounds pretty interesting, i imagine what someone watching it for the first time might react like.

The Bakiraka fight was one of my favorites in the entire manga, hope it gets adapted one day
I actually did some work for Berserk Redux, and I think the name confusion might be with Fandub of the Hawks, which eventually became Studio Taka, the Berserk motion comic guys (who I also worked with). Might be wrong though, not sure if ApostleBob ever had the Redux go by a different name.
Crazy that not only they brought back the English cast from the 90s anime and Golden Age films, but they legit redid the entire thing to go with the new scenes in terms of dialog. I'd figure all they did was just reuse the movie they already did, but made new voice work done. Only real noticeable change at least from the last installment with the whole gang back in the early 2010s was Ubik's actor didn't come back and was recast. And also Void now sounding more like how he did in the 90s dub.

Officially, "Wish" is now my favorite ending song to any anime.
It was a tough tie between "Torches" and "Drown" from Vinland Saga, "Heroes" from MHA (well, best MHA ending at least) or "Chainsaw Blood" from Chainsaw Man; but "Wish" has this melancholic beauty that, despite the Pop stylings of it, hits the idea of Berserk perfectly. It has this tearjerking vibe to it that works so well.
Then again, I would've gone with something more like Guts marching through the darkness with his claymore dragging behind him, with the darkness parting along its blade like sand. Y'know, like the ending sequence to Black Lagoon. Even some blood dripping into the shadow with Guts' armor breaking into the sand, with sunlight breaking it near the start of the chorus.
Yes, I know how Autistically I'm going into this hypothetical reworking of a fairly decent ending sequence, and I should really not bitch at all; but I do kind of wish they added more melancholy to this instead of seeing Guts, Griffith and Casca breaking into particles and reforming into a Behelit.

In a weird way, it feels like Studio 4C is slowly piecing together an "official" definitive adaptation of Berserk whenever they gain a little ground and funding to add more to the franchise. On a similar note, I had no idea that there was a fan project piecing together a more fleshed out version of the series. Though I really shouldn't be surprised. If it's even a moderately popular franchise, this type of thing usually tends to happen.

Honestly, Studio 4C should be given the reins to properly adapt Berserk as an anime, they clearly show a lot of love for the series with them releasing the Memorial edition. Obviously this is all supposedly that they don’t run into budget issues or time restraints like they did with the trilogy.
Despite Golden Age Arc’s issues concerning removed content, I feel the trilogy is the best adaptation, but more as an introduction for the manga, as it gives you a brief glimpse into what you’ll expect from the manga without feeling like you gotta devote hours upon hours for an anime season instead.
Had it not been for this channel I probably wouldn't have gotten berserk as much as I am now.

I remember watching the first berserk video and being super hyped for the second, after watching the third I read the whole series through in about a month, so the next two videos were more of a review, but still a welcome one. Can't wait for part six.
I've watched the full length berserk video twice and basically 16 hrs into the 3rd watch and I really can't get enough of this masterpiece of fiction
Caught the Berserk stuff around part 2 or 3 and have been watching every minute of it since, even both 21 hour videos. Really happy to have more to watch even if it's only a 26 minute video about an arc that's technically been covered. Honestly i didn't realize they put out a memorial edition of anything for Miura and Berserk

Its truly insane to me as a newer Berserk fan, came around in 2017 and got scarred and ran to hide away in the manga for the past 6 years, that it hasnt gotten a proper adaptation past the Golden Age movies/memorial edition. I mean sure Golden age is a solid 1/3 of the material but what about the other 2/3s that have been around for the past 20 years? Sure Berserk handles heavy subject matter and it is a very gatekeepy fandom but even then the fact that the studios that have gotten their hands on the IP have mishandled it so badly just has to be the worst course of events to ever occur for a piece of fiction. Its just crazy to contrast the constant failings of Berserk within the anime industry to the success of JoJo in that they are both old mangas that are both influential and popular worldwide but one has had a proper handling and the other has been fumbled more than a football in a mud bowl.

If you search up ‘Berserk Redux’ the first thing that pops up is “episode 1 - the band of the hawk” which is prolly why you remember it that way
I discovered the movies on Netflix knowing nothing about Berserk so I didn’t know what was missing, and thought I got a pretty complete story. I’ve watched them a few more times now, and I’m currently through eight volumes of the deluxe edition mangas which each have three regular volumes in them. So I might be backwards but the movies got me to read the manga.

I dont care about CGI quality half as much as other people do, but its still mind blowing to me that Berserk still doesnt have the adaptation it deserves. Like, how big anime studios like Ufotable or Mappa have not picked this series to completely adapt yet?
Berserk is so well known and inspired hundred of other series, not just in japan but in the west as well, and yet nobody tries to fully and properly animate it.
