    46:56 “Japan takes its first baby step to that era of history that everyone loves to read about but noone would actually want to live through.”
    I love this line so much. Humanity has a terrible habits of romanticizing chaos and feel that those times like Sengoku Jidai, Three Kingdoms, Napoleonic Wars, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War were “fun” just by looking through the lens of games, movies and shows.

    • @stefankatsarov5806
      @stefankatsarov5806 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not quite.
      Studiyng about peace times is boring since its just politics ( very ofthen whit not that much drama ) and war time is interesting because its ever changing and inpredictable. There is a reason why the more popular films have some type of action in them.

    Remembering that the anime adaptation of the manga The Elusive Samurai (loosely about Tokiyuki) is airing this month. Rare moment where the late Kamakura/early Muromachi period get some attention from this type of media.

    Go Daigo : You have helped restored the Imperial family sovereignity!
    Ashikaga : Oh I wouldn't say restored, more like under new management!

    Fascinating how Takauji saw himself as Yoritomos' successor which makes sense since they were roughly from the same Minamoto lineage but handing over administrative control of the Ashikaga Bakufu to his brother was the beginning of the schism with the Ko brothers as an added issue.
    I must say, Takauji was quite an emotional man, he did want a world full of peace and had shrines built in provinces to pray for that peace but his biggest weakness was allowing for his own bakufu to nearly collapse in its infancy due to politcal isssues spurred by infighting by being unable to draw lines where they should've been as the military leader.

    • @BuyuudenJapaneseHistory
      @BuyuudenJapaneseHistory  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah, Takauji is one of my favorite people in Japanese history, and a big reason for that is his moody indecisiveness. Even 600+ years later, he still feels so human and relatable.

      thats why seems like he should've pulled Yoritomo and Yoshitoki aka silently illiminating people to make the government stable.... but its not to his character so

    Finally we arrived at Muromachi. A special video for the Northern and Southern Court battles, involving figures like Kusunoki Masashige and Kitabatake Akiie, would be just as cool as the Genpei War was. Either way, it was a great video for the first part of the Ashikaga Age.

    • @BuyuudenJapaneseHistory
      @BuyuudenJapaneseHistory  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree! It was hard not to include more of the legends about Masashige, Yoshisada, etc. but... They barely appear in standard textbooks/study supplement books, so, in the spirit of the series, I decided to cut them. I definitely want to cover them in depth at some point in the future!

    Yet another stellar production and dare I say "God given" given the release date 😉 The Nanboku-cho period is one of favorites. Kusunoki Masashige will forever be one of my tippy top tier warriors. Loyal and ready to die for his Emperor even when said emperor is a fool 😭 RIP Masashige.
    Always appreciate you brother and the hard work you put into your work 🙏🏾You're an inspiration and definitely give me an intellectual kick to the noggin to continue with mine own project 🤜🏾🤛🏻

    • @BuyuudenJapaneseHistory
      @BuyuudenJapaneseHistory  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha good point. The timing was totally unplanned! Masashige doesn't get much love in the (modern) school history textbooks, so I had to cut him from this one, but I hope to do a more dedicated video either on him or on the early Nanbokucho wars at some point in the future. His is a fascinating story.
      I hope your project is continuing to advance smoothly!

    • @King_Steffon_II
      @King_Steffon_II ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BuyuudenJapaneseHistory I'm sure Masashige's importance in modern Japan had to be diminished in order to adhere to the conditions of their surrender and the "humanization" of the Imperial Family. I'll definitely be front and center for any production you make to do him and that tumultuous period some well deserved justice.
      I have a 10day vacation from work and another birthday coming, so I plan on really digging into my work!

    I know you invested a good deal of time into the wonderful long form, on-location War in the North video (I just started watching it, but decided to finish this last episode of the main history series before enjoying it fully), but I wanted to say again how much I love this history series, how excellent and unique and valuable it is for anyone outside of Japan who has an interest in Japanese history... and how much I'm looking forward to future episodes, after I finish this and the War in the North video, probably both today. The History of Sushi video was great too, as was the Revenge of the Soga Brothers... I'm sure I will watch the Tales of Horror video and the Genpei War Leader Evaluation videos soon too, and anything else on your channel I haven't gotten to. In short... I absolutely love the videos you make; and I very much hope that many more people will discover this wonderful series you've been making the last few years, as it really is the best stuff on TH-cam about this subject that I've encountered. I've watched something specifically about the Sengoku Period, probably from the Shogunate, but I've learned soooooo much more from this series about Japanese history than from any other source, period, and your presentation, and editing, and narration, and choice and use of artwork (and most recently, filming of real life Japan for the War in the North video!), have all been just spectacular from the start of this series... I wish you as much success with this as possible, and will be eagerly awaiting more of this series, and whatever else you choose to make for this channel in the future. Thank you so much for this channel.

    Its been a while since I read up on this, but some time following Emperor Hirohito's official surrender to the United States, ending World War 2, there was a pretender to the Imperial Throne who also came forward and accused Hirohito of being illegitimate using the same line of argument: that Hirohito was a descendant of the Northern Court, and the pretender himself was a descendant of the Southern Court. He apparently produced all kinds of documentation proving this, and from my memory, post-war Japanese authorities of the time actually managed to verify the authenticity of most of it. But the authorities used the same line reasoning that they did in the Meiji era: The Southern Court was legitimate until it suddenly wasn't, and that Hirohito possessed the treasures and the pretender didn't.

  • @MrWertheron
    @MrWertheron ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

    Just to add a bit more context to the Meiji-Early Showa court legitimacy debate: when the imperial ideology swept Japan, nationalists pushed for the erasure of the Northern Court (not even recognized as a court) or any mention of it from school books (there could have been only one divine tenno) and censured great historians (like Tanaka Yoshinari) who had to censure themselves or even quit their position at university, we didn't even have a good 14th century study before 1945.

    I hope at some point you care to go into more detail on Ashikaga Takauji & Ashikaga Tadayoshi's military conquests as you mentioned at 18:45. Takauji is one of my favourite characters in Japanese history for some of the reasons you have mentioned in this video, the fact that he was conflicted when going against the Emperor is interesting, and his brothers part in his success is often understated. I think the brothers are somewhat under celebrated considering the amount of influence they had. I would love to hear more about him as I don't think there are many videos going into detail about him on TH-cam.

    • @BuyuudenJapaneseHistory
      @BuyuudenJapaneseHistory  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel like I say this wishfully about a lot of topics, but I really do want to do a video on that subject eventually! I agree that Takauji is a fascinating guy -- his quirky human-ness makes him one of the most interesting samurai for me as well.

    Hearing about Go-Daigo's very obvious, avoidable governmental failures during the Kenmu Restoration is just painful, even if all these autocrats suck. Like seriously man, acknowledge reality dude. If maybe he relented in his stubbornness, understood his limits, and met the bushi where they were at, maybe Takauji would never have rebelled. Maybe then, Japan could have found peace centuries earlier, and peoples' lives could have been vastly improved in that time.
