    @3312cdfp5674 The National Maximum Speed Law was enacted in 1974, so the speed limit on all freeways was capped at 55 mph. If a state posted a higher limit (they were free too do so), the government would cut all of their highway repair funding. The law was modified in 1987 to allow 65 mph, and repealed in 1995, which is why some roads have 80 mph speed limits now...

    I was in 5th grade. I only lived 28 miles from San Diego but travel was so different and infrequent that going to San Diego was like going to a a place much farther away. It was a special occasion.

    I was born in 1985 in North San Diego County. My parents always told me that there was virtually no traffic on the freeway systems back then and I just found that hard to believe. Until I found this video 101not5. Anyways, that is a fantastic video. I can't believe how open Mission Valley was back then. My Mom said back then, they're used to be dairy cows in Mission Valley.

    It's amazing to see soooo much less traffic. As a born (in 1970) and raised San Diegan I miss seeing that so much. Now we are a cluster f**k with out of state transplants here... There was also a skatepark underneath the 163 freeway area off the 8 I remember called Oasis Skatepark.

    I hitch-hiked from Cleveland to San Diego in 1976. And went all the way to Ocean Beach on I - 8. And remember the first time I saw San Diego Stadium, aka Jack "the Murph" Murphy Stadium and Qualcomm. Compared to old Cleveland Municipal Stadium, it was beautiful. Of course both are gone now.

    Amazing to see the CA freeway signs in 1975 in this video! The engineers back in the day were really smart and intelligent knowing such construction would last a very long time, knowing that technology like cars would get better. It’s such a wonder to see the beginnings of interstate freeways.

    Omg this is so cool!! I grew up in San Diego county in the 90s-00s. I would spend weekends at my dad’s in Clairemont; he would take my sister and I to mission bay park, Balboa Park, fashion valley mall, old town, Belmont Park!! When it had Pirates Cove omg it was so magical!! So many wonderful memories :) thanks pops RIP

      Dang, you lost your dad young. Sorry for your loss, Megadextrious. I grew up in the College Grove area of San Diego south of University Ave in the 1960s. My dad took us out to the original city dump on Ryan Road by Chollas reservoir. My older brother and I were hard-core scavengers. You wouldn't believe the "pickins" we'd come home with. Dad also took us to Mission Beach at Belmont Park where we rode the Giant Dipper and spent the afternoon body surfing and riding the rock hard inflated surf mats (pre-boogie-board) we'd rent from Hamel's-and then maybe rent some pedal boats on Mission Bay. I was 54 when my pops passed from Alzheimer's in 2008.

    My first visit to SD was n late 1982. It was great seeing Jack Murphy Stadium like it was back then. Now, you can only catch a glimpse going east on I-8 and none at all going west. Always loved going under the bridge heading to Balboa Park. We drive there a couple of times a year since the early 2000's and the highways are packed all day long. We cruise up to Oceanside to get some great food at Harbor Fish and Chips and head back to SD no later than 2 to miss the bulk of the traffic. We had to take El Camino Real all the way back once because the I-5 was a parking lot. That's a nice drive anyway. I love coming in on 8 where the speed limit is 65 but you better be doing 80 lol Which is cool for me. I learned how to drive on the Dan Ryan in Chicago!

    • @celticsanster
      @celticsanster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sad so say, but no glimpse now of the stadium. It was demolished earlier this year. SDSU is building a new, smaller stadium on the site. However, the trolley station still has the old stadium style pylons and so it’s a little like catching a glimpse of the old stadium when driving I-8 east. I hope they keep that station architecture. It’s still strange not to see the old stadium. Even worse, the very last piece of it to come down was where I had my old Padres season tix seats. 😢

    DAMN, The freeway is exactly the same size, ALL those freeways the 5 and 8 are four lanes and that's 45 years later and they are the same size. The Populations grown 10 times that and the freeway is the same size. that's crazy, What has CALTRANS done for 45 years to help with the traffic? I will tell you, NOTHING and NOT ONE THNIG in 45 years. Where has all the tax money gone? The freeways are exactly the same, 4 lanes on the 5 and 8 and 2 lanes into downtown on the 163 from the 8 , OH MY GOD, What s has Caltrans done with all that money?

    As a reference, in 1975, the 15 south of the 163 split was not a freeway, the 805 ended at Main Street (Chula Vista) before Otay Mesa, the 52 ended at the 805, the 905, 56, 54 between the 805 and 5, and 125 didn't exist, although that little bit between the 8 and 94, but wasn't signed.

    • @cjs83172
      @cjs83172 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that has to do with the fact that so much of the Califonia freeway system was already built, that California was exempted from the exit number directive because of the costs involved. (It's for that very reason why California remains the only state not to have green mileposts on i's freeways, though there was an experiment with green mileposts.) Only the downtown Los Angeles area, as well as I-10 in Los Angeles county, had exit numbers, but the exit numbering did NOT include freeway-to-freeway connectors, which never made sense. Even now, some of the freeway-to-freeway connectors in Los Angeles still do not have exit numbers, like NB I-5 to US-101 (which should be 133B) and I-5 to CA-2 near Glendale, which has officially been designated exit 139, but there's no signage to that effect..

    • @kirkmoore4515
      @kirkmoore4515 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cjs83172
      California had mile post signs but no exit numbers. It was illegal to use radar on state highways/ freeways back then. So us truckers would be on the CB radio warning each other that "Smokey is hiding at milepost 183" and everyone would slow down. They had to pace you to give you a speeding ticket. The state pulled all the mileposts off of the roads about 1975 or so. Since the late 1980s radar has been legalized in California. That's when they put up those little "Radar Enforced" signs below the speed limit signs. They were resistant to putting exit number signs up because of then. The feds made California put them up. Some stretches of freeway are getting the mileposts back. Hwy 58 between Bakersfield & I-15 have them.

    Don't you wish American cars would rule the roads again? Too bad American car companies still need to catch up with competition from the Japanese and Germans. Nice to see that people drove with consideration and turn signals back then. Thanks for the video!
