The realisation that the entire cast has now passed away saddens me. Dad's army is pure comedy gold and watching it has helped me through tough times in life. I still come back to it once a while to escape reality. Even if it's just for a little bit. I must've watched every episode at least a dozen times. I still love it to this day.

I don't think that the majority of the viewers are conscious about between two laughs, what an outstandingly good acting performance comes to their way in this series. Arthur Lowe brings steady brilliance to the table as a matter of routine, yet IMO in this episode even he is outshone by John Le Mesurier and John Laurie, who engaged in that awkward, and heart-wrenchingly poignant conversation between themselves. Their performance is timeless and on the level, that it could be used as teaching material in theatrical academies, for a long time to come.

Those lines of the song Pike sings at the opening of the ep were quoted by Australian PM, Robert Menzies, at a state banquet when Liz2 came to Australia, 1954. Pig Iron Bob, as he was known, slightly embarrassed HRH, apparently & it is certainly an awkward moment in the news reel.

I see that Jack Jones is using a slightly changed version of the signature tune for the radio show "Monday night at eight o'clock" which ran from 1937 till 1948. 24:00
It's Monday night at eight o'clock, oh can't you hear the chimes?
They're telling you to take an easy chair,
To settle by the fireside, take out your Radio Times,
For Monday Night at Eight is on the air.

Pasu suel There's a lot wrong with your story. Firstly, in live multi-camera studio TV productions like Dad's Army the director is in the gallery queuing the cameras with the vision mixer upstairs, not on the studio floor. This episode was recorded in October 1969 and broadcast the following month. You claim to be 51-years-old which means you were at the very least a baby when this episode was recorded. Why don't you just admit you're lying?

@@TH-camcanfuckagoat I don't think he was meaning in real life. In another episode, Wilson comes into the office in captain's dress uniform (I can't remember why) and revealed he was a Captain in WW1 in the regular army. But this was on the show. Not in real life.

It is one of several derogatory terms involving the the term "Dutch" in the English language, like Dutch wife, Dutch courage or Double Dutch. They are all reminders of the Anglo-Dutch Wars.

I can't stand when you see pics from award shows when all the mean are wearing the same black-and-white tuxedos, it's always much nicer when there's an array of outfits at events - i.e. Godfrey with his top hat and cape, Fraser with his traditional Scottish attire, even Jones + co's addition of medals to their tuxedos (which I know is more to do with military protocol than making a fashion statement but you know what I mean)

Many of these programmes were rushed out and they probably never expected them to be repeated for 50+ years and dissected on You Tube etc. The fact that some of the BBC tapes were wiped bears this out. This particular episode was recorded on 30th October 1969 and broadcasted on 6th November.... just a week.
