    WOW! I bought 2 of those models back in November 2003! I have 1 of them in storage and the other one, I still use it from time to time. The MP3 function on both of them still works great after a decade owning them! I bout them for $99.00 each on Best Buy! If you don't want to hear the beep as you press the buttons, remove the batteries, hold down the stop button and reinsert the batteries while still holding the stop button, then let go of the stop button and every button you press no beep will be heard.

    the reason for the bad FM and weather band because the headphone jack is also the antenna just to let you know try a two headphones jack adapter use one as a antenna you will find out that the radio comes in better

    This was my childhood. I remember burning around 10 CDs to the 48 kbps ATRAC3+ CD. It actually sounded surprisingly acceptable. It came with a CD-ROM with an encoding/burning program you could use. Too bad the TV tuner is basically useless now, but the weather band is still useful.

    • @mikeromas4926
      @mikeromas4926 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also, I found that moving the headphone cord helped pick up the weather band. I thought I read somewhere that the headphone cord doubled as the FM antenna, but I could be wrong. Moving the cord definitely made a big difference when I used it though.

    I had one of these in high school, as well as its brother the D-NE510, same thing but no radio functions. Man, the use I got out of these. The 510 was even the CD player in my first car and fit perfectly between the center console and passenger. I can still hear the Reel Big Fish.

    I bought one of these new in 2003; it was very well-equipped, and included a reflective carrying case that you could wear around your waist. This was my very last portable CD player, and served me quite well during my two years running a flexographic printing press, and later was used in my vehicle until I got rid of it (I don't remember what actually happened to it). Good find!

    That Tandy speaker system would really come in handy! In fact, you should use it on your main computer. You could connect your stereo to the second input!
    I've never seen a Diskman like that before. It seems like a nice idea if it actually worked as it should, but walkmans never had very good tuners at all. Even when you turn on the DX switch, you'll still get a lot of static when you move around. It's just there so they can boast that it has it.
    OOooh, my Diskman beeps like that when you pause it too. You can turn it off at least, but it's extremely irritating, and I have no idea why anyone thought that was a good idea.

    I bought one of these when it was new, it was a warranty return exchange at Best Buy. I had 2 Rio-Volt CD players previously that had an issue with the firmware becoming corrupt, so I returned them and got this. It was a pretty decent discman, but the radio feature was useless, even in an area with lots of high power stations. The only thing I didnt like about it was the button layout. I ended up selling it to a family member to buy an iRiver Slim-X, which had the same features as this, but was a way superior design, had a rechargeable battery, and was alot smaller. The radio on the Slim-X worked so much better too.

    I used to have one back in 03 or 04, different model of Sony though. it was a white one that had both a standard CD model and a CD/RW MP3-ATRAC3 model with no radio feature. later in 2006 because iPods were still expensive, I got f blue PSYC model that only took one AA battery (best thing EVER because I always was hurting for batteries!) which DID have inbuilt radio and the same MP3-ATRAC3 and CD TEXT features. making CDs for that was always fun-- I always made a new MP3 CD for it as my library re-grew after a bad hard drive crash in my then-eMac 800.

    We had one of these (or at least something like this) for our Dad's car from 2003 to 2005 (by which point he finally got a car with a CD player)> Only irritating problem I remember was the loud beep sound when changing tracks, absolutely terrifying on the car speakers if its a long journey and you're trying to get to sleep.

    My understanding is that they didn't actually play MP3, despite the logo. They expected you to rip or transcode your library to ATRAC3 when burning discs. I had the Sony MPD-AP20U myself, which actually did support MP3, but it was really from their PC division even though it looked like a Discman.

    Good video. About playing your own mix CDs, it is not uncommon for some older players to not read the disc, like your Sony Walkman. But, the CD player in your car is newer, and so it reads homemade discs. Homemade discs are usually colored on the bottom, and store bought discs are silver. I have old CD players that do the sane thing as your Sony Walkman does with homemade discs.

    • @BilisNegra
      @BilisNegra 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That makes no sense as a reason for the player not reading the CD with MP3 files in it. It is supposed to read MP3, and while in theory a factory pressed CD containing MP3s could exist, in practice nearly EVERY disc with MP3 in it is a recordable cd burned with a computer drive. The player either was a fault from the start, or has partially broken over time.

    I remember those Tandy speaker systems from the Radio Shack catalogs of years ago.
    I had (or maybe still have) an RCA portable MP3 CD player, no radio, but it also doesn't play MP3 discs very well either. Lots of older CD players had trouble reading CD-R discs, even when they were finalized. CD-Rs are not recorded the same as factory "pressed" discs, and a lot of players had trouble reading them, especially as the players (and media) get older.

  • @amasha88

    0:15 Ohh right it's called Atrac3plus, I used to use the software come with it to convert lots of CD ripped tracks into Atrac3plus and then burn it into a CD, this allowed me to drop much much more tracks on a single CD compared to a mp3.

      +Peter Brown If you still have this thing and want to take it apart... It's pretty tricky to get the lids off of one of these. You kind of have to flex and bend the lid near the back in order to get the lid off. Unless you think you can be delicate enough then try at your own risk. I got the lid off of mine and it was pretty difficult.

    D-NE510 is the CD only version of this exact CD player. I have it, picked it up for $1 at the watchung store recently. it reads MP3 CDs fine, it just takes a while and you HAVE to press the Play button. also makes me wonder what version of iTunes you used to make the MP3 CDs with if that's what you used. iTunes 6+ had no problems making MP3 CDs for me when I had my MP3 CD walkmans back in the mid-2000s. back then I was able to fit my entire library on a CD. was great...
    my better PSYC Walkman reads them a lot faster though, and that only needs a single AA to function AND has radio/TV/weather inbuilt.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I did not use iTunes to make the MP3 CDs. I just burned them as a regular data CD-R containing the MP3 files. However, the files are in folders, and I know some really cheap MP3 players don't support folders.

      Thank you for your answer, it's just curious to see how something which was considered an high-end device barely 10 years ago today looks terribly impractical. Nowadays few people play music directly on CD players, moreover just take a look at the power and the number of mechanical parts needed to play some mp3 files!
      Today the cheapest chinese mp3 player can do it for 1/10 of the price of this thing (ok, I'm not considering the output sound quality).

    Of course, here in the Philippines, I think that the AM broadcasting frequency range (just depending on the radio receivers) spans from 522 - 1728 kHz, because we have a radio station from Marikina City called DZBF, and broadcasts on 1674 kHz, that can be accessed on radio receivers (whether analog or digital tuner) spanning up to 1700 kHz, and can't be accessed on some receivers spanning up to 1600 kHz only.
    And by the way, the Philippines is using the 9 kHz steps in AM broadcasts since 1977-1978 when the traditional 10 kHz spacing (used in the US) has been gone away.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This person received some kind of station from Serbia on 1719 kHz: th-cam.com/video/-EC8aeRbTfM/w-d-xo.html But that is likely a pirate (unlicensed) station. I don't think there are any legally licensed AM/Mediumwave stations above 1710 kHz in the world.

    have you noticed that these Sony products are not stereo?
    They don´t say stereo so I´m assuming that it is not stereo.
    However, I do have the D-NE511 which is only a CD MP3 player. it is great player and so is this one that you are presenting. Also, I´m still looking forward to find one of this Sony D-NF610.
    The CD player is really great!! it also reads CD´s with minor scratches.It is a really noisy player but, meh...

    8:08 Philippines uses Expaned band on AM too. Not just Australia but also in the Philippines. I bought my Degen DE1128 or Eton Grundig G2 Reporter has 9 k steps on AM which includes expanded band up to 1701 kHz. I reportedly received DZBF RADYO MARIKINA on 1674 kHz in Libis, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
