  • Deep Purple is a legendary British rock band that formed in 1968. They are considered pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal music, with a career spanning several decades. The band has gone through numerous lineup changes over the years, but their most famous and influential lineup includes Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (keyboards), Roger Glover (bass), and Ian Paice (drums).
"Strange Kind of Woman" is a song by Deep Purple, released in 1971 as the lead single from their album "Fireball." The song features a catchy riff and dynamic vocal performance by Ian Gillan. It's known for its energetic and bluesy vibe, showcasing the band's musical prowess and improvisational skills.
The lyrics of "Strange Kind of Woman" tell the story of a woman who captivates the narrator with her mysterious and unpredictable nature. The song has become one of Deep Purple's signature tracks and remains a fan favorite, often performed live during their concerts.

Made in Japan, one of the greatest live rock recordings of all time, Gillan was at his peak.

I never get tired of the Gillan/Blackmore duets, so this is one of my favourite live Deep Purple songs. I love the looseness of these performances, where the band could stretch out as they pleased, as opposed to the much more scripted performances you tend to get these days when the stage show is more important than the music. It's odd to think that when Deep Purple first came together, they were about the same age as The Warning are now, and only a little older here, but the gigging and recording experience back then was vastly different. The Deep Purple performance I would recommend is You Fool No One from the California Jam on 1974. It has David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes in the band and they are all on top of their game. It has the added benefits of being better filmed and in colour.

that's true, many artists start off young - look at Genesis as another example. Thanks for the recommendation - G

Ian Gillan was an incredible front me, maybe it's just me, but I don't think he gets his due as Blackmore seems to dominate most discussions around Deep Purple. There's an incredible version of Child in Time which I didn't notice when I searched your TH-cam channel. If you haven't done that yet, it's a must.

thanks Tom. We did a Child In Time, it's coupled with a shortened Speed King that came out Nov 20. Great song, I agree about Gillan not really being recognized

Difícilmente aparecerá algún grupo que pueda superar a los más grandes!!
Deep Purple es único. En esa época, la voz de Ian Gillan era la mejor.
Gracias por reaccionar a éste tema!!

This live recording made in Copenhagen in March 1972 prefigures, a few months earlier, their Made in Japan double live album recorded in August 1972. All the ingredients are already there.
In relation to Deep Purple, I have a few suggestions:
Firstly the band Captain Beyond, featuring Rod Evans (former Deep Purple singer on their first three albums in 1968-69), bass player Lee Dorman (ex-Iron Butterfly), guitarist Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt (also with Iron Butterfly in 1970-71), and drummer Bobby Caldwell (who played with Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer and later with the band Armageddon along with Keith Relf). Try their song 'Dancing Madly Backwards (On a Sea of Air)" filmed live in Montreux in 1972.
Secondly, the Ian Gillan Band (which Ian formed in 1975), which fuses hard rock with a hint of jazz-rock. Try the track "Clear Air Turbulence" filmed live at the Rainbow in London in 1977.
And finally the band simply called Gillan (formed in 1978 after the split of IGB) with a sound somewhere between hard and heavy (with even an almost punk energy at times). There is a 20-minute film shot live for Japanese TV in 1978 in which the band played six songs ("Secret Of The Dance", "Bringing Joanna Back", "Message In A Bottle", "Dead Of Night" and "Smoke On The Water".

It's too bad Glover's bass is missing in the mix. Darn. That would be cool if Roger played his old Rickenbacker and re-recorded it.😅

Die musikqualität ist sogar besser als bei made in japan, und das heisst, dass die Europäer bessere verstärkerspezialisten haben als die Japaner.
