Leaked documents reveal UK banks helped fraudsters and money-laundering - BBC News

  • Leaked documents have revealed how some UK banks have helped criminals, money launderers and Russians under sanctions - and have also failed to stop crime when they suspected it.
The documents - known as the FinCEN files - were leaked to Buzzfeed News and shared with the BBC by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
They show that London is a hub for money laundering - with billions of pounds worth of suspected dirty money moving through the banking system.
Mishal Husain presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Richard Bilton, for BBC Panorama.

I used to work for Beneficial Finance, an HSBC subsidiary. The sales force knowingly wrote loans they knew could not be paid due to lack of affordability. As a collections agent, I questioned how a particular loan was underwritten, when it was obvious it couldn't be paid, I was told they would write five similar loans to cover it!!!!! The banking system is corrupt and will destroy itself.

This looks, at first sight, like media are doing their job in reporting banking's crimes. However when you know a bit about how banks really operate and who they really are it seems more like a limited hangout "
"A limited hangout is the deliberate revelation of some information (e.g. about malfeasance) to try to confuse and/or prevent discovery of other information. A modified limited hangout goes further, by slightly changing the information disclosed.By presenting some true and useful information, a source may gain credibility, which can be put to use later, if a credible source is desired to disseminate disinformation. Another points is that by presenting information, an audience may be desensitized to an otherwise engaging or shocking topic."

Its not just the UK american banks are also named and who they laundered for, and Deutsche Bank and citibank also. It looks like all major banks are involved. so is Paul Manafort why is this not surprising, and yet the top of the pile is never charged. The Guardian posted ...
According to the ICIJ, banks began flagging activity linked to Manafort as suspicious beginning in 2012. In 2017 JP Morgan Chase filed a report on wire transfers worth over $300m involving shell companies in Cyprus that had done business with Manafort.
As per the report from www.buzzfeednews.com/article/jasonleopold/fincen-files-financial-scandal-criminal-networks?ref=bfnsplash
Bank of America, Citibank, JPMorgan Chase, American Express, and others collectively processed millions of dollars in transactions for the family of Viktor Khrapunov, the former mayor of Kazakhstan’s most populous city, even after Interpol issued a Red Notice for his arrest. Khrapunov, who had already fled to Switzerland and who claims the allegations are politically motivated, was later convicted in absentia on charges that included bribe-taking and defrauding the city through the sale of public property.
I dont doubt for a min the government and many officials are complicit in this. But ofc they get a pass while the middlemen take the fall.

Actually this is not entirely correct. I worked in a Bank for many years and completed many Suspicious Activity Report Forms.
The rules are clear, if you don’t report a suspicion, that later proves to be genuinely money laundering, you face prison of 14 years.
These reports are used by the bank to monitor activity and often they will order accounts to be closed with immediate effect. The regulators (FSA) and the National Crime Agency operate with the banks. It is against the law to ‘tip’ off anyone that may harm this investigation, which includes the media and this can lead to a prison sentence
This is one incident of failure to report Money Laundering, that doesn’t mean it’s endemic in the system. HSBC were fined some years ago for breaches in their Money Laundering Failures. This bank is not a British one and operates in many different jurisdictions
This is bad and sensationalist journalism by the BBC.
