These games are notoriously hated but you gotta love the engine of Doom 3 and Quake 4. The combat feels so good. Doom 3 was crazy for it's time but it really has grown on me and is scary as fuck! It's only a bad game if you were expecting the old formula but as a horror shooter it really is a classic and ages like fine wine.
Absolutely, this mechanic gives a hellova boost if used properly. It's a shame though that there's no vertical acceleration mechanic, similar to Q2 (double jump). Q4 is very underrated.

Multiplayer is a different thing. It's only for Singleplayer that (for the first part of the campaign) your speed is limited
