There were certainly weaknesses in her game. Her forehand could really break down, both on the volley and from the baseline. Her backhand passing shot could sometimes be suspect. Her mentality though was perhaps almost the most suspect - she was always prone to big emotional ups and down. As Ted Tinling famously said, "She goes from arrogance to panic with nothing in-between."
People keep talking about Nadal, Djokovic and Federer as the GOATS and I’ll vote for Martina without a doubt not giving 2 shits about gender. She is without a doubt one of if not the greatest athlete to ever play this sport.
Thank you for this upload. Especially points with that white yonex rq-180. Solid, sharp and crisp. Martina one of the tennis queens and grand dame of SW19
One of the all time great athletes. She had another great shot in the 1983 US Open final where she ran down a lob covering a lot of court and ripped a forehand up the line. Players like her and Steffi could have excelled in a number of different sports.
@@mikerzisu9508 It doesn't matter who did it, it happened and changed the outcome of her career and Seles' career. To ignore and pretend that Seles' stabbing didn't change anything is to be in denial.
there was one shot Martina hit against Graf in the 87 final I thought would be here- a hook shot forehand down the line from way off the court- 1st set
Margaret Court without a doubt- check her singles win/loss record out-92%- far higher than any male or female player- 192 singles tournament wins- again far higher than any other player!
She is the greatest female tennis player of all time and there’s not even a close second. She’s also one of the 10 greatest female athletes of all time and definitely the best athlete to ever play tennis.
Well she probably would spend more time developing her backhand if she was playing now, but she didn't need it back then. Her serve, volleys and forehand did the work for her.
Any shot from her time would get destroyed in today's game but it's completely pointless and useless to bring up these things because if Martina was 25 years right now her pace would be on par with the rest of the field and conversely if Naomi Osaka was 25 years old back in 1984 you can say exactly the same thing about her shot compared to shots from today's players.
No way. How can u sat that? If she would have played in this era she must have improved that. Moreover, this generation players uses graphite player , not d wooden one. So, just imagine had Martina used it!!!!!!
the best point from the 87 Graf final was the hook shot pass down the line- Steffi had Martina on 1 side of the court, she hit it to the open court and Martina ran it down, flicking a hook shot past her.
At 1:46, we can see that often, one need very little pace, only accuracy. Too much pace, unnecessarily, can really sacrifice accuracy. I believe Federer is in agreement with me.
Mild Beauti Martina Navaratilova and her family's join U.N. trade (weights and measurment) raw to productive....love dear ,we continue to like you talk Champian...
If modern day tennis instructors get and adult student of either gender, they should tell him/her to watch Christ Evert videos. At club levels, this style still works best: massage the ball simple straightforward strokes, use the opponent's pace to redirect, gliding footwork, drop shots and lobs, solid but unspectacular overheads. Chris had such a variety of shots she could hit: hard drives, soft floaters, moon balls, drops and lobs, volleys. These shots are not difficult to learn if you start with the old-fashioned flat groundstrokes. And they are easier on the body!
A friend of mine saw martina play at the virginia slims open and he told me she is huge and ripped!! Because she was a lesbian no one would dare question her steroid used but she took steroids to look like that and over powered the femininity of Chris evert Lloyd.
Almost puked reading your comments. Today's game women especially is boring. All they do is slam the ball and shriek and pump fist. No finesse and skill at all. I think the new technology has deadened the sport.Give me Martina and Chrissie, Borg McEnroe and Connors etc. Now that's real tennis
Very mean and degrading comment. You are referencing one the very *best* tennis players of either sex. Martina redefined the serve-and-volley style. I am sure Martina could have beaten a lot of male pros when she was in her prime.
Martina...simply the best. Incomparable. No weaknesses in her game. So fun to watch.
There were certainly weaknesses in her game. Her forehand could really break down, both on the volley and from the baseline. Her backhand passing shot could sometimes be suspect. Martina should've won some GS finals against Graf and Martinez, but luck was in favour of them
I find quite incredible that I was thinking EXACTLY that while watching this video.
Tennis is about mastery, not physical power. Martina *is* the best
Greatest athlete to ever play this sport, and any other sport
Luv her kick and slice serves. Only 5’8”. But so much torque and spin on it and so quick to the net.
Volleying Skills to really admire and study..
Serve and volley is obsolete now
@@mikerzisu9508 But volleying isn’t.

Absolutely the greatest female tennis player of all time!!!.
How she covers that much Court with that much power behind her shots is simply INSANE.
You forgot to mention she didn't perspire despite all the coverage. Always fresh with swinging hair.

Those points back in the day were different to what we see now, players had to go to the net and step forward. The physical toll was very different

She was a boring Tennis Champion at that time.
Her dominance of the womens game made Tennis so boring you know.
However she defected to the USA for a good reason.
Boring tennis. Almost puked watching this. Her bh slice did it for her. Reliable. But boring. Women’s tennis has come a long way
The only thing that's better now is the pace, nothing else. There was more strategy, net play and finesse back then.
