      It's posturing.
That industry in those states will fall apart as the parts production elsewhere becomes entirely dependent on the EV only industry.
No one is going to make components just for the limited ICE auto sales in those republican states which are low population as it is and cannot support a large auto industry.
Effectively it will just force people to buy their EVs from out of state, and then the states will just tax them for it.

It's the oil billionaires seeking to maximise their profits before electrification of transport and renewable make oil redundant outside of petrochemical uses.
The auto industry is already moving towards EVs, albeit at an overall slower pace than Tesla's head on rush which is their entire business is EVs.
Every major auto manufacturer conglomerate has plans in motion for the gradual switch to EVs, some are just better placed than others - Tesla would be nowhere at all without a decade of govmt subsidies on EV production propping up their none existent sales in the first years.

    • @DavidRichardson153
      @DavidRichardson153 ปีที่แล้ว

There are major problems when it comes to hybrid vehicles. To get the simplest and cheapest out of the way, they still use gasoline, so it faces the same problems as everything else that relies on fossil fuels does - just ask Texas how they got the oil and natural gas flowing again during their winter freezes (spoiler: they didn't).
      Okay, now more in-depth.
A hybrid's electrical system is largely the same as an EV's, so you are still getting the same problems EVs get, even the whole range thing, as some hybrids even come with plugs so that they can be charged like EVs. This is not even the biggest problem with hybrids.
So what exactly is the problem? You have TWO propulsion systems for your vehicle...in the same vehicle. Have you ever done work on your car's drive system, whether that car uses only an ICE or a hybrid system? Even the most basic things like an oil change or fluid check perfectly shows just how much space any drive system will take up. And that is just for ONE system. Try imagining that for two of them.
Whether you give with an ICE, an EV, or a hybrid, these drive systems force size and weight limits on you, regardless of any present regulations. You want power? Okay, make it bigger. You want it to better fit in your garage? Okay, make it smaller. Oh, it needs to be only this heavy or else it could damage roads or even itself? Okay, make it lighter. Every single car is a balancing act between performance (speed, haulage, passenger count, and/or whatever else you can think of), range, size, and weight, and finding even a decent balance between them is much harder than you think.
That last criteria, weight, is especially difficult. Heavier vehicles need more energy - and thus more fuel(s) - to move. This is why larger vehicles are always less fuel-efficient and get worse mileage than smaller ones - you will _never_ see an F-350 go further than a Prius. This is especially true for fuel. Have you ever carried a gallon of milk or even water any great distance with no kind of assistance whatsoever? Well, those same problems also affect cars.
For hybrids to counter the massive weight that having two drive systems bring, they have to make one or both of them smaller, which typically means less performance (at least in power). It is why hybrids always have smaller fuel tanks than an ICE car yet still get virtually identical ranges. That has been arguably the biggest hurdle for EVs, overcoming that weight-vs-range barrier, though they have made significant progress there, hence why more car makers are looking to making their own EVs.
This is not to say that hybrids are terrible vehicles. True, for sheer power, an ICE or even a modern EV work better, but hybrids, because they generally emphasize having lighter weights, will get you a lot more mileage, figuratively and literally. Sure, as I said, ranges are largely identical between the three types these days, but with the hybrid, you are getting more out of your fuel budget than any ICE ever will, and that is especially true if you increase your vehicle's size. Only in the smallest of cars can an ICE even beat a hybrid or an EV, but that is because that extremely small size and thus practically nonexistent weight means you can get rid of a lot of driving aids that are unnecessary in that such tiny vehicles, such as power steering. Basically, if the vehicle is too big to fit in a pickup truck bed, a hybrid system usually wins.
In fairness to the EV, the wide range of power options to provide the charge for it does mean that its fuel bill (because even EVs have one) will likely be far less than the others, but that initial cost of entry is still high and therefore still out of reach for most. That said, as far as reducing your fuel bill goes, a hybrid usually works best, and this is arguably their greatest strength. Granted, depending on how they were designed, a hybrid vehicle can still operate properly (though not necessarily fully) if one of their two driving systems fails for whatever reason, but that is highly dependent on the maker, as some hybrid vehicles are designed to effectively cease functioning should any critical part of either of their driving systems fail, which is fine for personal safety, but not exactly helpful to get it fixed, especially not if the failure occurs while on the road and now you find yourself unable to even get it off the road (that happened to me, so I needed a couple of volunteers to push me off the road - using their cars, no less, as doing it by hand was nowhere near strong enough - and end my blocking of traffic).
On the whole, EVs have the biggest advantages in fuel costs and even maintenance (electric motors break down a lot less often than mechanical engines - e.g. ICE), they have always had power that is at least comparable to ICEs going for them, and as far as ranges go, that has been more-or-less resolved, but as you point out, certain environments (usually cold ones) and a general lack of infrastructure continue to hold EVs back. Unfortunately, hybrids are not a solution - what they are is a stop-gap, a fill-in until a proper solution can be rolled out, which will be either further improvements in EVs (progress is being made on the temperature front, and the solution to infrastructure is kind of obvious, though the latter still faces the problem of how it is powered) or a whole new fuel that supplants fossil fuels. For the time being, though, you are right that EVs are not the answer for everyone, but they do have the potential to at least get close to it.

Back in the 70's, technology, was talked about, using nuclear power ( using a nuclear pellet), to give cars and trucks a lifetime fuel supply. I'm still waiting.
I know an engineer, that worked on a water powered engine. There was a device that would break down the water molecule and burn the hydrogen, with the waste product being oxygen and water vapor. The catch with this technology was, it needed an engine that would not rust.
A freight train uses electric motors (some of the most powerful in the world). Those electric motors are powered by diesel generators.
      There are no easy answers.

What I do know for certain is I’m sick of hearing a bunch of lies and watching the political posturing for alternative energy, specifically the promotion of Electric Vehicles (EVs). Our congressmen and women for years have been making policy for votes and are now promoting how clean and efficient EVs will be. This really hits home to me and is simply not true. The subsidies for this less green vehicle sickens me. The EV believers will continue to promote the false beliefs of the efficiency and green advantages of wind and solar power to power the grid for the increase in electricity needed for EVs.
Let’s review some facts: Currently the maximum efficiency of Solar Power is at 33% which currently we are only achieving 26%. For Wind Power the maximum efficiency is at 60% which we are currently achieving 45%. And there is no technology in sight that can increase that efficiency. The combination of wind and solar energy only makes up 3% of the world’s energy use. To use this energy in an EV, you must store the energy in a battery.
Here are some ugly facts about the batteries needed to operate an EV: One car battery weighs about a half ton. To make one half ton battery, you need to process about 250 tons of our earth’s materials. Currently, Tesla has the world’s largest car battery manufacturing facility. It would take 500 years of manufacturing from this factory to make enough batteries to store one day of the United States’ electrical needs. This helps explain why wind and solar only provide 3% of the world’s energy. And this is after 20 years of research and billions of dollars in subsidies.
Now, let’s talk about the environment and the impact the manufacturing of wind, solar and the batteries needed to store the energy: All of these are built from nonrenewable materials. For example, a 100-megawatt wind farm will power 75,000 homes but takes 30,000 tons of Iron Ore; 50,000 tons of concrete; and 900 tons of plastic to build. To get the same power from a solar farm you would need 150% more of Steel, Cement and Glass. Now, add the rare earth metals like Lithium, Cobalt, Copper, Iridium and Dysprosium needed for batteries. The current plans would require increasing the mining of these elements by up to 2000% of current production to fit the world’s needs. The mining of these metals will take place mostly in foreign countries and it’s alarming to note that some of these countries are hostile to America. In addition, the gold rush for the mining of these elements will surely bring ugly labor issues in underdeveloped areas of the world. That’s right, child labor and unsafe working conditions for most involved. Now, factor in the amount of conventional energy it will take to increase mining and manufacturing operations to this level. Also, let’s factor in the waste of worn-out wind turbines, solar panels, and batteries because all of these have short life spans. It’s off the chart. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, by 2050, the waste from just these worn-out turbines, panels and batteries will double the amount of ALL WASTE currently in the world. That fact should scare the hell out of you!
Have we not learned from Europe who has heavily invested in wind and solar power combined with eliminating fossil fuel exploration? The lack of sunny days and less wind than predicted has led to a reduction in available power, and with no natural gas exploration allowed in many EU countries, they are reliant on Russia to keep their lights on and homes heated. The demand and shortage of supply has resulted in skyrocketing heating costs for the citizens of those countries. We are certainly headed in that direction if we continue on this path.
The lawmakers keep promoting these false beliefs for EVs along with wind and solar power. Somehow, we need to hold on and believe that intelligence will kick in. The cost to the environment for EVs and wind and solar power are immense. Our government continues promoting this technology before it’s ready and lying to us about its cleanliness. The facts are clear for hydrocarbons, that technology is making them easier and cleaner to use. Hydrocarbons are still greener overall but that doesn’t mean we should quit advancing technologies for even cleaner or alternative fuels. This is and should be a priority.
Sure, I have a vested interest in the internal combustion engine and the vast array of power it brings to many modes of transportation, agricultural needs, mining, construction, boating, recreation, stationary power, etc. Since the EVs aren’t greener, our government should quit playing politics and invest in technologies like Hydrogen that are green. It truly is green power, the best alternative for our environment and the life of the Internal Combustion Engine. But I guess that makes too much sense for a bunch of politicians.
I am an optimist and hope we can change direction before it’s too late. Our future and the future of this planet depend on it.

If they were to ‘ban’ the sale of EVs (though on what legal grounds, I cannot imagine) it would just mean that people would have to go interstate to buy their cars, since ICE vehicles will not be manufactured or sold in the country … not too good for new car dealerships.
However, if they prohibit EV charging stations, people would be forced to drive older vehicles or buy vehicles overseas and have them shipped to the US … also not great for business.
They don’t appear to have thought this through beyond a dog whistle sound bite to appeal to the Luddite MAGA people who fear the future.
It’s a futile gesture doomed to failure, so by all means, let them have their delusions.

For those interested in the transition to EVs (the world just hit 10% adoption for the full year of 2022; the US lags with only around 5.8%):
New technology disruptions typically follow the same pattern: three bands of roughly equal time. 0% to 2%, 2% to 80% , and 80% to 100%. We hit 2% in 2018 after roughly a decade of serious EV production. That strongly suggests 80% by 2028 (one more decade after hitting 2% adoption), and then 80% by 2038 as the S-curve decelerates. Many don't realize how quickly the transition will happen. Even the transition from the horse-and-buggy to automobiles only took about a decade, and that was also occurring during a world war, and while the interstates were being built-out, AND before gas stations were ubiquitous. Tech disruptions are very misleading in that the first few years appear to be linear growth, whereas the overall growth trend is exponential.
    Some numbers from December:
    Norway - ~85% EVs
    Germany - 55% EVs
    UK - 39.4% EVs
    China - ~30% EVs
It's also worth noting that the bulk of the world's auto sales occur in China, so that has at outsized impact on the overall global EV adoption percentages.
EV adoption will occur as an economic function (Wright's Law); not based on the feelings of people who like internal combustion engines. As EVs gain economies of scale, they create a virtuous cycle of lowering prices, which spurs even faster adoption. Meanwhile, ICE continue to lose economies of scale, making them ever more expensive until they are no longer an affordable option.
