Thank you Lindsay! It looks really good!! That lead wrap will keep the minnow at a wounded fish pose, hanging down from the foam. I love it!

Absolutely loved this fly Lindsay and really enjoyed tying it. Looking forward to trying it out on my two local lochs; I'll do a fast start/stop retrieve on an intermediate line.

Your version with the blended synthetic dubbing being well brushed out. Adds so much to the effectiveness of the pattern. The longer fibres not only give movement and the wounded life effect. The completed beastie just screams eat me. I would also humbly suggest trying it with a DI 7 or 8 to tempt the deep running big brownies. On the point with a shuggie on the dropper. You are never to be considered tight. Just avoiding unnecessary waste of materials is never a bad idea. Tight would be not sharing the hard earned wide range of skills and knowledge of your last thirty plus years of enjoyment fishing at the highest levels. Simply not in your nature. My friend.

You obviously never tried to get a pint out of me. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment Mick.

@@lindsayiflyfish the that bit of fur can be the wing on a cormorant is doubly valid. One making effective use of time and materials. Two the cormorant is year round staple in use on almost every trip. Bonus is a fur fibre wing is just as mobile as marabou with a higher resistance to trout teeth. So the flies last one heck of a lot longer. Flies only catch when in the water. Replacing shredded flies costs time and potentially less fish to the boat.

Nice looking fly Lindsay 👍🏻 When your tying the foam in try turning it around so the taper is facing upwards, I find it keep the foam straight when your tying it in . . If that makes sense! 😂

Had some fun with this pattern a few weeks ago. 15-18ft leader is about the length i'd go for - strip it in until half way, give it a second or two pause, strip it in to about a quarter of the way with a pause and then a final couple of strips and then hang it slowly. I have more hits during the retrieve than the stops though a lot of the time the fish just smash it - so unlike most things that float you want on some of that big boy tippet.

Its a very exciting way to fish for sure.

Lindsay, it's a little off topic but have you ever fished flyline from Barrio?

What is the reasoning of adding weight to the fly when you want it to float ? I have never used this style fly before.

Adding the lead has several functions. It makes casting especially in difficult conditions easier it’s mass could be blown about resulting in short casting with severe wind tangle issues. It telegraphs it’s location as it hits the water. Trout investigates has another fish left an easy meal? The lead adds a lot to the action of the fly during the retrieve. With the combination of floating head and weight towards the rear gives that injured prey attempting to escape to safety vibe. As Lindsay says on a regular basis. “Be the fish” the fly is there to entice the fish not the angler.

Hi Ralph, Michael is spot on but mostly it keeps the business end the hook point under the surface. This enhances your chances of hooking up with a fish.
