You can actually still harvest the carrot and replant the top (saving at least one inch of the flesh). So long as you keep it watered you can keep the tops alive in a separate pot or section of garden if you need the space. I just leave one or two in the ground each year and plant new stuff around it.
Great info about it seeding the second year. I've been waiting for what seems like forever for my romaine and butter lettuce to seed. It gas some flowers but they keep closing. Is it not going to seed bc of the cold?
Hi there! That is a good possibility. Tear a piece of lettuce to test for milk- a white substance that forms on the cut edge of the lettuce. If it’s not milky- it’s not ready to go to seed yet.

In your opinion, what's the best variety of carrot for clay? I've amend my soil every year with sheep/ chicken manure, but clay is a constant battle
