  • A well-designed garden creates interest from early spring to late autumn, and beyond if you also select plants for the winter structure. But, for the main growing season, much of this interest comes from flowering and foliage plants. Gardeners who want a low-maintenance landscape should look for perennials that are easy to grow and offer a long flowering period. Most perennials flower for two to four weeks, but longer flowering perennials, such as echinacea and catnip, measure their flowering period in months, not weeks.

      You're right! Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) are a popular choice among gardeners because of their low-maintenance nature and vibrant, daisy-like flowers. They are hardy, drought-tolerant, and can thrive in various soil types, making them an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. Additionally, their bright yellow blooms attract pollinators and add a cheerful touch to any garden. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with Black-eyed Susans!

    I live in Florida zone 10a. I have bees and butterflies all year 'round. It's a lot of work to have nectar flowers and host plants available non-stop. I just got some Walker catmint from High Country Gardens. If the cats can just stop rolling around on the plants, I am excited to add the catmint to my pollinator menu.

    • @PlantDoHomeGarden
      @PlantDoHomeGarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, it's wonderful that you're making an effort to provide a continuous supply of nectar flowers and host plants for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators in your Florida garden. Ensuring a diverse and year-round selection of plants can indeed be a challenge, but it's an incredibly rewarding experience for both you and the local pollinator populations.
      Adding Walker's Low Catmint (Nepeta x faassenii 'Walker's Low') to your pollinator-friendly garden is an excellent choice. This perennial is known for its lavender-blue flowers, which bloom from late spring to early fall, and its fragrant, gray-green foliage. Catmint is drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and attracts a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Be sure to provide this plant with well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade for the best results.
      To help deter cats from rolling around on your catmint, consider planting it in a location that is less accessible to cats, such as in the middle of a flower bed or surrounded by other plants. Additionally, you can try providing a separate catnip plant (Nepeta cataria) or a dedicated cat garden in another area of your yard to help redirect your feline friends' attention.
      Keep up the great work supporting pollinators in your garden, and enjoy the beauty and activity they bring to your outdoor space!

    I have only been in our new house 4 years so I am still working on getting my gardens "layered".
    I got so lucky, the previois owner loved gardening and left all her peonies, irises , and a few others at the house. However certain things just went rampant and i am still playing catch up

      It sounds like you've inherited a wonderful garden with lots of potential! Taming a previously cultivated garden can indeed be quite a task, especially when some plants have become a bit overgrown. Take it one step at a time, and remember, gardening is a journey, not a destination. Feel free to experiment, rearrange, and see what works best for you and your space. It's wonderful that you have such established plants like peonies and irises - they can truly be the gems of a garden. Keep up the good work, and happy gardening!

    Just to let u all know that the anthuriums i have in pots in my garden have been. flowering all year round for the oast few years iv propergated them into new pots and i have 11 plants in pots

    • @PlantDoHomeGarden
      @PlantDoHomeGarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's wonderful to hear! Anthuriums are beautiful plants known for their long-lasting and vibrant flowers. It's fantastic that your Anthuriums have been flowering all year round and that you have successfully propagated them into new pots. Having 11 thriving plants is quite an achievement!
      In Durban, South Africa, with its warm climate, Anthuriums can often thrive and bloom continuously. They appreciate a bright, indirect light and a well-draining potting mix. Proper care, including regular watering and occasional fertilization, can help keep them healthy and encourage continuous flowering.
      Thank you for sharing your experience with us, and I'm sure your Anthuriums bring a lot of beauty and joy to your garden. Keep up the great work!

    For me, "long blooming" isn't from early summer to early fall (three months). It's more like late spring/early summer until late in the fall or first frost. If you have a large enough area to grow perennials and annuals, having waves of color for shorter periods of time works. But with a more restrictive garden size, I prefer longer blooming perennials.

    I live in London, UK and geranium rozanne never reblooms for me. 😢

    • @PlantDoHomeGarden
      @PlantDoHomeGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm sorry to hear that you haven't had success with Geranium 'Rozanne' reblooming in your garden. While Geranium 'Rozanne' is known for its prolific and long-lasting blooms, individual experiences can vary based on various factors such as climate, soil conditions, and maintenance practices.
      In London, UK, Geranium 'Rozanne' should generally perform well as it is well-suited for temperate climates. However, there are a few considerations that may help encourage reblooming:
      1. Pruning: After the initial flush of blooms, it can be beneficial to deadhead spent flowers and trim back the plant slightly. This can help promote new growth and potentially encourage additional blooms.
      2. Adequate sunlight: Geranium 'Rozanne' prefers full sun to part shade for optimal blooming. Make sure the plant is receiving enough sunlight to promote healthy growth and flowering.
      3. Soil moisture and fertility: Ensure the plant is growing in well-draining soil that retains moisture but doesn't become waterlogged. Regular watering and the occasional application of balanced fertilizer can support healthy growth and flowering.
      4. Overcrowding: If your Geranium 'Rozanne' is growing in a crowded area, it may benefit from some spacing to allow better air circulation and sunlight penetration.
      By providing the right growing conditions and proper care, you may be able to encourage reblooming in your Geranium 'Rozanne'. However, it's worth noting that individual plant performance can vary, and some factors may be beyond our control.

      @@itsastckup Stole? Is that a typo for Astilbe? If so, there are quite a few sorts of Astilbe in respect to when they flower, but I would say max a month. The one that flowers the longest (and quite easily obtainable) is Chinensis Pumila. It flowers later in the season and has a groundcover growth/habit.

    Yarrow ? IS terribly TOXIC for cats, dogs, horses. Humans touching it can cause skin rashes.... so no little toddlers running around near yarrow. Always, ALWAYS, research your plants folks, before investing imho.
    You might want to add this info when describing each plant. Gardens can be beautiful AND safe.

    Good stuff, but for the effort and money, you cannot beat blanket flower for blooms or duration. They just look for the whole time early summer through frost

    • @PlantDoHomeGarden
      @PlantDoHomeGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely right! Blanket flowers (Gaillardia x grandiflora) are a fantastic choice for continuous blooms throughout the season. These vibrant, daisy-like flowers are low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and can indeed bloom from early summer until frost.
      Besides their impressive bloom duration, blanket flowers also attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making them an excellent addition to any pollinator-friendly garden. They require full sun and well-draining soil, which makes them an ideal choice for many garden settings.
      Thank you for sharing your experience and recommendation. Blanket flowers are certainly a beautiful and valuable addition to any garden looking for long-lasting color and low-maintenance care. Happy gardening!
