    I'm a different type of 3D printing guy. I got into it very recently for a specific reason. I'm a airgun field target shooter, and I got a printer to make various accessories like scope parallax wheels and a bunch of other things. This is a very niche sport where you can't just buy these things off the shelf. As a result I've immediately thrown myself in the deep end with CAD, with no prior knowledge. A few such items are on Thingiverse, but most don't fit my needs. I've designed side wheels to fit specific scope models by taking out my calipers and doing the work. It's taken me about 3 weeks to go from total noob to developing a bunch of files that are modular and can be adapted to other people in the sport's needs, and getting really nice prints of my own designs.

    This is so cool, I just got into 3d printing literally last week and have been binge watching your videos and thought they were just great with all the information in an easily digestible way, but this is next level! It really is the hardest part of the whole process -using software to make models, or if you dont want ot make models from scratch, simply modifying models is a big chore, this really takes out that chore. It took forever to figure out how to remove a logo in a thing i downloaded from thingiverse. Just subtracting a region felt like I had to do an intro coarse to CAD design so this really does help, thank you. For making models from scratch the CAD/modelling world is begging or a VR app though, its so much more inutative to operate in 3d space and they've acually found people who dont play video games play VR games just fine because of that reason, so i think maybe desinging in 3d space would also be juyst as easy, shaping things with your hands, or roughly sizing things between your fingers and what not, that would next next level.

      @@MakeWithTech Thanks.
      After uploading a model, a few recommendations:
      - make the model image on the model detail page the same aspect ratio as on the search page. My picture kept getting cropped.
      - I looked at the html code, and it looks like the preferred size for the model image is 300x200 px. Maybe add a snippet about that on the help page (couldn’t find it if it is already there).
      - add a list of published models on the accounts page. I’m not sure how I find the models I uploaded without searching for them.
      - as not all customization options are implemented fully yet, hide the customization settings that are not supported. Right now, the [190:1:260] is displayed below the parameter description. See model MOD230301UTVJ0
      - as the model owner, it would be nice to have the edit model button on the model details page, not just on the search results page.
      - long term wish list:
      - cascading parameters, show parameters only when appropriate. E.g. if model is a box, with a boolean checkbox option to enable rounded corners, only show the corner radius parameter if the rounded option is checked.
      - let a parameter reference other parameters, in the box example, make it possible to set the limit of the radius of the corner to ½ the width and ½ of the height of the box.

    I kinda tuned out but I'll comment anyway, wouldn't it be better to have some click and drag to resize or other interactive tools for existing STL models rather than editing code? CAD is not that hard for simple brackets and things it's only hard for elvs and trees and art stuff

    • @claws61821
      @claws61821 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Visual CAD isn't hard for SOME people, just like Script CAD isn't hard for SOME. To say that one is better than the other depends entirely on the individual person and the individual project. Visual tends to work well for things with simple shapes and arcs and tangents, but (at least with the free and sub-$300/monthly options) gets clumsy and cluttered and weighted down quickly with anything complicated or that has a lot of repeated features. Script works well for complex mechanical shapes* and for models with repetitive features (gears are a good example) but likewise gets bogged down and has trouble with swooping arches and organic shapes. From personal experience BOTH suck on the sub-$1k level for anything with lots of fastener or linear threads or if you're trying to model a full machine in a single file.
      Editing STLs is not something you really want to do in any CAD if it can be avoided. Too much data is lost in the conversion to STL and even using the same editor program often gives you a tangled mess of artifacts instead of what you wanted to work on.
      I do agree that having visual tools available would be beneficial, but not at the expense of abandoning or restricting script use availability.

    • @BearNPum
      @BearNPum ปีที่แล้ว

      Thing is, you don't have to edit code at all for the projects in the models space. You can if you want to adapt a project to do something else or make it better or different. But most folks will just find something they need, change the associated parameters, and get the stl they need. The features and way this site works is truly revolutionary. Diddling stl's in CAD is far from simple.

    • @whitewittock
      @whitewittock ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BearNPum I like the guy I hope it does well but I don't think the venn diagram of people who competently 3d print is far from those who understand how to make a curtain ring in CAD, maybe it is.
