UTF-8 is a superset of 7-bit ASCII, so it makes sense that it'd work up until people started using higher unicode characters.

A lot of old BBS Door games, simply filtered out *ALL* control chars (EG: Control-C)
You could have a small batch script that just keeps re starting the game
