    From a dairy farmer, cows produce colostrum for 3 days. If you possibly can, get some from one of your cows, even if you have to rope her down, and milk some from her. You can freeze it in quart size containers for emergencies like abandoned calves.

      It makes me mad how careless they are with another mans stock. Just because you can throw a rope, does not mean you are a roper. Just because you can straddle a horse, does it make you a Cowboy. If I were the owner of this herd, these boys would be packing up and headed home!
      They have no common sense and don't know a lick about how to treat cattle and horses. They have no respect for the owner, the rancher that owns these animals. They are punks, who need to go somewhere and learn how to have some respect for the man that's signing their paychecks! I was totally discusted by their callousness toward the animals. Not a hater, you have to use a rope some times. They not only jerked a horse and the saddle off, but they also didn't check that horse for a collapsed lung or broken ribs. That wreck was their fault as was the cow running off seconds from calving scared, from her calf. Eaving it there without that first rich milk that newborn calves, need to grow healthy. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the cow and calf died.

Sounds like you've not spent your summers tending your cattle herds and Winters driving a team in 4' of snow with a team and hay sled so they winter well. Then have healthy, happy, fat calves and cows in the spring. I've lived that!

    Never been around Longhorns but I have been around a large cattle herds of Herfords, most of my life!
    If my daddy would have seen you running his herfords like that, he'd have docked your pay. Running any of the horses, and he'd have sent you down the road! He'd never had to chase his horses! He just rattle a coffee can full of rocks or his hat with some pebbles in it and give them a hand full of rolled oats he kept on his saddlebag.
    I never chased a horse in my life, nor kept a halter on them and your horses need to know what "whoa" means.
    You leave that cow and calf alone. You could have killed her running her like that after she had calved! She'd have come back for that calf, but you scared her away!! Texans sure treat their livestock different than the old cowboys I grew up did. We pushed our cattle slow and didn't run the weight off of them! Got a cow calving? Seperate them from the herd and leave her until morning, then push her and her calf to the herd. Or, gather that calf up in your arms over the saddle or withers and that cow will follow her calfs bellering. There is no excuse to have that cow unmother, and that calf was not evern ready to stand up yet! You made the cow nervous and pushed her away from that calf! Leave that cow alone for a day she'd have cleaned her calf, got it up walking, fed it and slowly headed for that bell, looking for the herd with her calf alongside.
    Now I'm no hater, but I'm pretty experienced when it comes to livestock and if I were 15 yrs younger I'd load up a couple my horses and join you. Teach you boys a few things although you did get the job done. But man, it was sloppy!
    Don't ever run your cattle, your running the fat right off of them. Fat=money. So you lost your boss a some money if he's going to put them through the ring.
    Go up to Wyoming and let some of those Wyoming ranchers boys show you how they move cattle! Might help if you bell the lead cows. That way they won't turn back on you if they stray off. They can hear that bell for miles and will go to it. Just sayin'.

    • @leelindsay5618
      @leelindsay5618 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sound like you'd appreciate Greg Judy's channel. Fat & happy cows and they can move the whole heard with a call and a piece of ribbon.
      These guys must have money to waste, because all this land isn't being managed for grazing, they run the fat off their animals, and from the videos I have seen, they look for opportunities to chase stuff.

    • @jeremygouweleeuw452
      @jeremygouweleeuw452 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree there was to many people around when the cow was calving. Especially if these cows are not used to people around.
      You got some tough horses and are quick with a loop, but you have to play a little for sure.

    Don't listen to the hate, because frankly its from folks that don't know. They don't have the experience of life out on the range or on the ranch, or if they do they have the most docile herd I've ever heard of. I grew up in that life and while I've never run roping breeds, (Angus Maine anjou Gilby cross mostly and Long horns for work) its a necessary part of herding cattle. Some times as you said you HAVE to. And I'd rather a rope than separate or lose an a pair. So keep doin' what you're doin' boys! With out you those girls would be lost!

Hed was a true cattleman hope to see him in heaven??? and thank him again for all his great advice no more breaking the ice. Today some people wanted to buy my ranch, interesting.. a lot dry around here..I'm OK. I find it funny how they lie as to their motives, Oh it's not for sale. Go with God be well.

    I don't know about you guys when we go to gather our cattle will always take a couple of quarts of frozen colostrum. I don't remember the last time that we gathered cattle we did have at least one lone calf so that colostrum comes in handy especially when we gathered heifers.
