Today, I am cultivating a couple of the terraces so I can plant seed potatoes and another for transplanting tomatoes & aubergines from the polytunnel. I also check on the bees.
After much planning, we left England 2 years ago to build a new life in beautiful rural Portugal #SerraDaEstrela - It's not been easy, but it has been wonderful.
Thank you so much for watching #HowardsPortugal
I don't really know much about bees or farming or fruit, but we are trying to become less reliant on the shops and to grow more of our own produce, so we thought we'd give it all a try!
Ever wondered what would happen if you just sold up & moved out?
We did, so we sold up & moved out!

Well that makes a change as all bar one of the new comers on TH-cam are in Castelo Branco because of the price. Just one in Coimbra. I am also in Guarda, more expensive than Castelo, but double the rainfall which helps, unless you were here in 22 as we got bugger all of rain and far too hot at 44c or 111 f. You should still have all your veg in by now unless you are well above me . Shout if you need help of any kind as was my job for 50 years.

Thank you! We have plants coming on to transplant when it is a bit warmer...still getting night frosts up on the edge of the Serra da Estrela!

Nice job!. Btw, who cares about the ones who criticise from their warm and soft couches behind a screen?? their opinion is worth zero (from what you say at 6:06)

Don't know where in Portugal you are ,but you are far too late with planting veg as all min is in and growing apart from sweetcorn and french beans. How long you been in Portugal if you have been here a while you should know is very difficult to gro veg in the summer heat. You can't plant on the same timetable as U.K. as we are 6-8 weeks in front and can grow 2 crops if you get your timing right. I reckon you look about my age so are here doing it for yourself and family. I'm 2,164 ft up and I still need to plant well ahead of U.K. and harvest by early July or it gets killed off in the heat, even with water.

Good to hear that you are ahead of the curve & thanks for your advice! We are over 850metres (2788ft) above sea level and luckily we have lots of water with mines flowing throughout the year. Last year, we planted at the same time without the poly tunnel & had a low success rate & ended up planting again later on & had better luck...we are still liable to have frosts so the poly tunnel is a must. Cheers!

Hope you are not in Castelo Branco county as is one of the driest, that's why it's cheap and a lot of Brits have set up there for the fact it's cheap and now they need to catch water to keep it all alive.

Hi Robert, no, we are not in Castelo Branco but to the north in Guarda...we did look at properties in Castelo Branco but as you rightly say, water is a problem...also it is very much warmer there than where we are!
