    As sinful as this list is (and ANDREW. What have you been DOING) let's look at it this way. You get to read all these incredible authors for the first time. That's enviable.

    I am 100% interested in doing a readalong when the Malazan Broken Binding editions come out. I have all 10 main books but have only read Gardens of the Moon. I think reading and discussing the series with a community would be a lot of fun

      Malazan was great, but I can't overstate how hard it is to get into. There are literally entire websites and discussion groups just to help you try to understand the series. I quit my first attempt at reading it about 1/3 of the way through. It was just so hard to follow, and I didn't realize that it's not a story about any particular character, which was a completely different concept for me as I had no idea what to follow then. I definitely recommend reading some of those websites and discussion groups if you find yourself getting lost. It's a great series. It's just got a super steep learning curve.

    There are so many great authors out there, old and new, no surprise that you missed some of them. I bet there are more than the ones you mentioned here, but don't worry, just keep reading and making good videos about the books you have read.

    Bold of you to expose yourself like this 👀
    I have literally zero doubts that you are going to love Red Rising, Will of the Many, and First Law. And I will have to join you in trying to find the courage to commit to Sun Eater and Malazan, haha. Hope these authors all live up to your expectations!!

    I know you were mostly being humorous, but don’t feel bad. I’m probably 20+ years older than you and there are several of these authors I haven’t read either and I want to. I’ve been reading scifi and fantasy for almost 45 years. I remember reading the first 3 Dragonriders of Pern books the summer I was 11. Many of the series you mentioned I’ve only read the first one. I’m retired and now have plenty of time to read yet still feel I’ll never catch up. I also think I’m now a victim of my own modest success. I can remember going to the bookstore agonizing over which book I can afford to buy then going home and reading it. Nowadays I come home with 5-6 books plus have special edition subscriptions, preorders, Kindle buys and other online purchases coming in several days a week. I have more to choose from than I can possibly read. Also BookTube has expanded my TBR. I now know more about upcoming books, hidden gems and even classics than I did 10-15 years ago. And I have worked in a bookstore 2 different times in my life. Recently Jeopardy had a fantasy category which answered all 5 questions correctly. My husband commented that of course I did, I’d read them. Nope, I’d only read one, the rest I knew from YT reviews and lists. I’ve gotten to where I feel guilty rereading books. I’m currently rereading Shogun because of the new adaptation. But hey if this were the worst problem in my life that would be awesome. And yes Abercrombie is high up on my list of shame. I have the first trilogy on my shelf so soon. Oh and thanks to you I’ll be starting the 3rd Dungeon Crawler Carl book soon. My husband has started the series too.

      I'm re-reading (listening) Pern right now ❤ I'm having so much fun listening to the series I loved as a kid. Xanth, Earthsea, Pip & Flinx, Myth Adventures 😛🙌🏼

    • @EmpressNoriko
      @EmpressNoriko 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ithrahmunchswallow468 I met Anne McCaffrey at DragonCon in the 80s. I have an autographed copy of Renegades of Pern. I’ve read all the Pern, Talents,Crystal Singer and more of hers. the Pern written solely by her son didn’t engage me as much. Haven’t read her daughter’s book yet. Xanth, I think I’ve read the first 6 or so. Used to get stripped copies especially of box sets when I worked at B Dalton.I know my husband has read the Pip & Flinx and Myth books. I used to daydream about bonding with a dragon of my own or getting a fire lizard. the recent resurgence of dragonrider fantasy has been wonderful. A TV series adaptation of Pern could be fantastic or awful. I remember her talking about being approached about a movie at the panel discussion. She said they wanted F’Lar, Lessa etc. to look like Arnold-esque bodybuilders so she turned them down. I love me a good cheesy Arnold action movie, but as a Pern dragonrider nope, just no. The Belgeriad in the 80s then Mallorrean in the 90s was also a favorite of mine. Too many good books, too little time.

    I'm on the same page as you with most of these authors (I've read Jemisin, Martin and Le Guin - all incredible!) so it's nice to see someone on booktube who hasn't read so many of the popular authors as well. I started Hobb right around the same time as you and I'm loving it! Planning on starting Abercrombie, Ruocchio and Pierce Brown this year. Maybe Pratchett too!

  • @OhioEddieBlack

    Don't apologize for not reading Song/Martin. I have no doubt it's awesome but I have no desire to read something I can't finish. Lots of people are in the same boat. That dude needs to get his crap together. Yes - I think Malazan is best done if you can buddy read it or get in on someone's readalong. Lastly - RED RISING, dude. Get on that. Like yesterday. It's another one that's a good one to buddy read, but not b/c it's tough to follow but because you'll be reading and you'll really want there to be someone there you can say this to: "HOLY CRAP! CAN YOU BELIEVE SUCH-AND-SUCH?!?!" It's just so much fun to read with someone else because there are so many feels and plot twists and moments where you want to cry and punch something. The first book is truly very different from the rest of the series, but they are all really good. While it's true some people didn't love book 1 (not me, I loved it), I don't know a single person who doesn't like the series as a whole.

    2 of the strongest recommendations that I cam give you: start with Abercrombie and, as for Pratchett, start with Mort and the Death books and then move on to Guards! Guards! and the rest of the City Watch books.

    The author that got me back into reading after high school was Sara Douglass with her Wayfarer Redemption book and the 9, or 11 book, series it’s a part of. I judged a book by its cover and was not disappointed.
    I will sing the praise of Terry Mancour and his Spellmonger series. A second side story trilogy finished this month. Plenty of books in that series. Don’t know about physical releases but it is on Kindle and Audible.
    And Dungeon Crawler Carl was good. Can’t wait for more in that series.

    As surprising - and dare I say shocking? - as this list is, you get to read such amazing books in your near future! Might I also gently plug Tchaikovsky's Shadows of the Apt series? It was one of my greatest surprises of last year. As for Discworld. There are several good entry points, but I will never stop advocating for pub order here. Characters from other subseries will turn up here and there, so it's awesome to be introduced to all characters in order. It is nice to see the development of the world itself. To see Ankh-Morpork from other perspectives than the City Watch. Also, the first 2-3 books don't have the best reputation, but I strongly think they deserve better. First Law is my #1 favourite fantasy series (Discworld is #2), so I urge you to get to it.
    Happy reading!

  • @RAllenPrice
    @RAllenPrice 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Very pleased to see that have yet to read Discworld - me too!! I tried The Colour of Magic THREE times! DNF!
    I am told that I picked the wrong place to start. So, whilst the City Watch collection is a recommended point if entry, I am now going to plump for the Death collection, starting with Mort. Fancy joining me? 😉

    I loved First Law just like everyone else! I also loved Broken Earth…but some people HATED it! Matt for example from Matt’s Book reviews hated it. But it’s one of my favorites so I’m really curious what you think.
    You have to keep us posted on Islington…what a ride! I loved The Shadow of what was lost and really did not like An Echo of Things to Come. I’ve been terrified to read book 3

    Heads up on the Witcher series, the games take place a few years after the end of the main book series. Personally what I would do is pick up the book "The Last Wish" which is the first collection of short stories and see how you like them and decide from there because the games sort of stand on their own.

    Great video!!
    ...
    Andrew, I would recommend reading the Witcher books before playing the game.
    The books take place prior to the events on the games!
    You sould start with The Witcher Stories: first, The Sword of Destiny (1992), and secondly, The Last Wish (1993).
    Then continue with The Witcher Saga.
    I'm currently reading, from The Witcher Saga, the 2nd book: Times of Contempt (1995).
    ...
    * A warning!
    You should know that The Witcher is/can be considered Literary Fiction! (artistic literature; novels that do not fit neatly into an established genre). So, they are not standard fantasy novels!

  • @daniela.domingues

    Sun eater is my favorite series of all time, so while I wish you’ve read it, I can understand your reason. If you know you’re going to live it (which you are) lol then yeah take some time to start it because it’s going to consume your life, and they’re big long books

    Hi Andrew. As a fellow sinner with respect to some of the authors mentioned by you, I have to say that I have completed at least one book by most of the series mentioned and my sin is of not finishing the series, despite loving the first book; so I truly understand your situation. However, I couldn’t let my jaw drop and verbally express my shock when you mentioned Joe Abercrombie. Now that’s a big sin in my book, lol. I would love to add my gentle persuasion to the others who have already recommended reading it and say that if I had to pick a book for you to read, it would be the First Law trilogy. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts after you get to it. I am currently on my nth reread of the book and I can only envy you your first time into this world. So even if you don’t think pick up any other author, please please please pick up Joe Abercrombie this year. Happy reading!

    You totally need to read the red rising series it is amazing! I’ve read the first two so far and am going to read the rest soon! The first three is just a trilogy so you can only read that if you want. But if you like the trilogy a lot you can continue it with more books as well! You should totally do a video talking about this series and you reading it once you get to it.
    Also got should read some books by Jeff Wheeler if you have not already! He writes amazing clean fantasy stuff that’s so good! You’d really like him!

    Also I've been reading fantasy probably longer than a youngster like you have been alive, and I'm only just reading my first Abercrombie this month. I'm buddy reading the First Law trilogy with my book buddy at work. If you like Robin Hobb or John Gwynne, while JA is not as good as either of those IMO, it's a similar vibe. Some people don't love book 1 b/c not a ton of stuff happens, but I'm good with a slower pace since I grew up on Tolkien, so it didn't bother me. Definitely read him in order though.

    Tchaikovsky is one of my auto buy authors. I love everything he has put out but I wouldn’t start with The City of Last Chances. I think it was great but I only got through the first half of the book because I have faith in the author bringing the story to an amazing place otherwise I would have DNF’d. I would start with The Children of Time or An Empire in Black and Gold.

    The thing with Red Rising is that the author's prose is absolutely awful. The guy doesn't know how to properly set up a scene or even to transition from one scene to the next. Some people can get past that and enjoy the story, for other it's a deal breaker.
    For the witcher, as others have suggested, read the first two books to get a gist of the characters and world, and then you're all set for the game.

    I'd say read the Witcher series first than play the game. However, I don't think the order is going to make a massive difference. Each of this is actually a very different experience and if you liked the show (at least the beginning of it) I dare to say you're going to love the books because they are way way better and no, the creators of the show didn't stick to the source material very well. However, I also liked Henry as Gerald. And this dynamic between him and Dandelion is also in the books. I'd be very happy if you read this series 😊

      @@Cinephilemo i understand where you are coming from
      Could be due to me not liking him in book 4 . I actuale like his crew that was quickly killed off in book 4. I would have wanted more of the green and blue
      Also i did not like book 5 as a whole. To me it seems that pierce brown figured out what a dictionary was and used every big word he can find combied with the over use of metaphors and described everything a million diffrent ways for him to sound smart
      I did like the virgiba politic chapters because i like politics in books but what happened next which i dont want to spoule to anyone but it is the biggest bs garbage that i have ever seen. I knkw you know what i am talking about

      @@JohnDoe-xf9ly you know what, that last part i wont argue with. I agree with you, but simply because im still not sure if pierce brown is gonna do anything with it in the final book, and because he so far hasn’t, i think its bad

    Discworld must be read in publication order. That is all.
