  • Take a look at Australia's last commercially operated steam railway , it lasted till September 1987. Filmed in digitally remastered super 8 sound movie film as well as VHS tape , this footage was taken in 1983 .

16 to 5 miles? That's a good cut in distance

So close to my my town of birth, Scone, literally closed down 5 months after I was born. Petty I never got to see it in life, yet I can now see it 36 years later. Cheers mate.
The old lasses really did have a living, breathing sound about them. The newer diesel units are not the same but are massive in comparison.

HMMM, those cars are a lot smaller than we had here in Pennsylvania, back in the day.
I still recall some steamers, as we were out at the end of the line and didn't get the new equipment....

I would have thought there was another way to raise steam nowadays without the use of coal or other pollutants ?

This is a good bit of history there do you know if the tracks are still there or if they have been taken up or has it been turned into a heritage railway?

      All gone unfortunately

@@johnphillips592 Actually most of the railway lines are all still there but now buried in the undergrowth. Many of the branch lines in NSW still have their rail lines but now nature rules and mature trees grow in the four foot. Outside of major cities Australian governments don't like railways much preferring the trucking industry.

excellent. it looks like the vhs started at 9:35. what was the driver saying about the red car? the wagons are of a style like those at the beamish museum in uk. they seem to be an economic way to move coal only because the company already has them. i can't see any mechanisms on the wagons to indicate how they are unloaded. how are they unloaded?

These 10 tonne capacity non air braked coal hoppers have lifting lugs on the top of the hopper, a crane lifts them out of their chassis and over the ships hold, crew members of the ships would then release the trap door on the bottom of the hopper thus allowing the coal to drop out the bottom and into the ship, hope that satisfies your question.
