As someone who's lived in China for 5 years, I think this is the most important thing I've seen done to document a small slice of what this country is really like. Plus, great original music knows no boundaries.
The interview beginning at 1:23:33 actually predicts the property collapse of 2022. This is a very insightful documentary for multiple reasons. Thank you.
I got a huge kick out of this, as a Chinese guy living across the drink in Canada. I've been super disconnected with my culture and most of the stuff that happens over there, so to see the familiarity of music playing such a big role in the underground, it's absolutely fantastic. Great work!
Hi everyone! Thanks for all your kind comments. Really appreciate it! Editing Episode 2, and beyond. Hoping for a summer release. Continuing to fundraise, if you feel so inclined : www.theworldunderground.com/donate
+Gumilang Damar Budiman Hi! We hit Surabaya, Jogja, Batu, Bogor, and KL! We had planned to go to Padang for a punk festival, but the date got moved. You can read all about Indonesia here : www.theworldunderground.com/blog
+Gumilang Damar Budiman Hi friend. Here is the long-form article on Indonesia finally written for Impose Magazine: www.imposemagazine.com/features/the-astounding-underground-of-indonesia
Great journalistic work, showing a scene and people that otherwise, we'd probably never heard about; portraying their passion, their lives, their hopes and their work, thanks a lot for this! We don't know what the future might bring for China, but this right here is a snapshot of history, something much more valuable, than it might seem initially. I'm glad I found it!
What you’ve done here is incredibly valuable to the culture, and to music history at large. This should have millions of views. I’ll do what I can to get it there. Thanks for this
Phenomenal work. I really resonate with this documentary because of my love for the DIY and underground punk/alternative scene in the States, and also Chinese culture in general. I lived in Fujian for the past three months and really want to see a new surge of the arts and expression come back into Chinese culture. These amazing people are all on the forefront of that. Thanks for capturing these moments!
waaaa you've made such a great work!! i'm glad to see that you had the opportunity to create other videos! the bands that you introduce all sound dope and i will try to listen more about them. thank you !!
Amazing work...I now know a little more about the 'feel' and 'deep feel' of the those not in the spotlight and I reflect back when I was in Japan and Korea for a time and some of the kids I met on the streets and their enthusiasm to see other peoples and other countries...I invite all of these bands in this doc to tour the U.S. and I would like all the underground bands here in the U.S. to do the same in China....break all barriers!!!
Thanks for the great video. Even as a Chinese, I still find myself ignorant about lots of things happened and happening in this country. There seems to be so many amazement waiting to be discovered. It is so complicated.
That was incredibly cool and inspiring to watch! amazing editing, and you've truly brought to light a special piece of art that touches so many people's lives.
Thank You, Max! Appreciate it. We love P.K.14, too. Which way did you donate? Didn't see it come through yet. We've been worried about the channels choking. So far, so good though. Glad you enjoyed! Have a great day!
Hi, I can't donate because the paypal link on the website is broken. Sorry for speaking too soon. Will check again very soon. Once again, incredible and important documentary.
Max Ernst Yes! That was brought to our attention last night, too! Damn. We fixed it! Wonder how long it was broke. Thank You, Max!!! Appreciate it a lot.
This is phenomenal. I've just finished watching it for a second time. I follow you on Instagram but I thought you just had a cool sounding name and went to loads of cool gigs in Chengdu. I had no idea about all this cool as fuck stuff. Till now. hahaha! I only really 'found' the Chinese scene in the last year. Since Covid. And I've just left. And I miss the scene like crazy. It's lovely to see earlier versions of amazing bands like Hedgehog, Stolen and Hiperson. And Yang Haisong is the Guvnor. DIDERS - whoah! - I loved them! And that Residence A song is an absolute belter - currently being looped on repeat. It was clearly a labour of love. Thank you so much. I can continue to live precariously through your adventures every time I watch it.
Shout out for the guys wearing the hair long, even though a lot of people don't affirm (especially older generations). Also big shout out to all these fantastic female drummers. Something you still don't see too often and I wish there were more girls and women who find fun in these instruments.
Thanks so much for doing this! P.K 14 are one of my favourites bands! Also just starting getting into several bands featured here. Hello from New Zealand!
In June we will go on tour with them again. They sound very different now. Keep an eye out. www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-world-underground-dispatch-series-music-art/x/101516#/
In the spirit of music scenes in China that not many seem to hear about in the major media I came across this (th-cam.com/video/zs2zUv98IG4/w-d-xo.html ) after watching the series Warriors (th-cam.com/video/1bp8Lfq5rV0/w-d-xo.html) which featured music from different artists after each episode.
nice job. we made a rock doc covering PK-14 and other Chinese indie bands a few years ago. still working on finding a distributor. see our website: www.chinarockdoc.com

Fantastic documentary series, highly recommended.

+middleWave Thanks! :)
What is the name of the Duck Fight Goose song at 53:11? So awesome... Love the vocal melody. Really inspiring and fantastic work btw! :)
Such killer bands and fascinating artists!
This is incredible
Thank You. Your "Henry Demos" video is killer! I suppose I will see you in September! :)
incredible work man
Kick ass. Loved the noise stuff extremely!
Thanks so much for doing this! P.K 14 are one of my favourites bands! Also just starting getting into several bands featured here. Hello from New Zealand!
Lauren kb Hi Lauren! Thank You! That's great! Reach out! I'd love to come your way some day.
3:15 omg i see myself in the crowd
haha This is a good one. And I spot my middle school at around 49 min. That's interesting.
Hath my ears bewitched me with whispers of Xanadu?
oh lol I saw you during Hiperson's live this June
I like her idea around 1hour:33 To translate “our band could be your life” into Chinese to inspire more DIY spirit
Last I heard from Azerrad was that it was happening!
what is the song on the 43:46 ?
It’s very interesting, it’s like every hipster trend being fully realized in hyper speed. Damn them Chinese is efficient.
Yup. I'm not a music producer or anything but....every last one of those songs sound like worldwide mega selling hits to me!
That Residence A song is the bomb!
residencea.bandcamp.com/
45:36 that was a Les Paul D:
I was hoping to god that Hiperson would make an appearance and I was pleasantly suprised :)
Nice! Best band.

I personally know and jammed with Atom, the drummer from the Hedgehog. She was nice.
This makes me see more of how cool China can be. I only saw a hint of it when I was there.
P.K.14 is the best rock band in china.
Agreed!
I wish the people had more say in the running of the country. Some cool people.
song at 28 mins?
49:52 My high school uniforms!
非常高兴没有记录那些二手玫瑰,痛仰,反光镜,谢天笑等等主流中国摇滚
Tiva maybe
Tiva maybe 我也不怎么喜欢二手玫瑰反光镜谢天笑,但一个圈子里总有各式各样的人。
牛逼
was the dog comment sarcasm?
"Dogs are tasty"
Based, eat dogs, rock and roll
nice job. we made a rock doc covering PK-14 and other Chinese indie bands a few years ago. still working on finding a distributor. see our website: www.chinarockdoc.com
杨海菘带您走进中国摇滚
肯定。这种存在于每一个场景。
中国地下音乐有不少杰出的乐队,人渣也不少.
Can someone please tell what song is playing at 22:38?
