  • Japan performing Life In Tokyo at their last ever concert in Nagoya, Japan (16/12/1982).The lads are joined on stage by Sandii, John Punter and members of the road crew in a very light-hearted performance.
The quality is dreadful, but the atmosphere and historical value far outshines any other considerations...

For all us Japan/Sylvian/Karn/Jansen/Barbieri fans - this is of immense historical value!!! End of an era, quite emotional really.. One wonders what might have happened had they chosen to stay together? And yet this meant the start of their respecitve incredible solo careers. Anyway, cracking performance of this great party song. What a way to finish! Doesn't matter that the quality is poor - this is pure feeling. Many, many thanks for posting!!!!

He's probably loathing every second, but Sylvian speaks some fairly good Japanese at the beginning: "Konya wa Japan no saigo no consaato desu." This can be roughly translated as "As soon as this song's over the panda gets it."

Reminds me a bit of Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars "not only is this the last show of the tour but this is the last gig we're ever gonna do", announcement, or words to that effect! Get the impression that it's very much Sylvian and the rest of the band. In fact the only "band member" who seems to be on good terms with Sylvian is Masami Tsuchia, which maybe tells us everything we need to know. At first, when the band were at the front of the stage, I actually thought Steve Jansen was Ryuichi Sakamoto!

Wow... it looks like chaos. - what an ending! Despite all the crazy pandas etc bouncing around you can really feel & see the tension between Sylvian & Karn. If you pay attention to all the body language its clear David is the "villain" who is an outcast looking short of friends.
I never understood at the time why they split at the very peak of their success, & having spent most of their career about 5 years ahead of their time in 81/82 every single they put out whether new or old was another classic hit. It was only decades later I heard that David had stolen Mick's GF, and it finally all made sense!
Can't help wondering how huge they might have been had it not been for that girl. On the other hand I dont think Tin Drum was their greatest album, and Rain Tree Crow was IMHO a disaster that i can barely force myself to listen to. So maybe it was for the best... we'll never know.
