    So, as a guy who watches a lot of cricket, I'm going to say that none of these players stole home. They slide in, they touch the base, they get up, and they haven't stolen the base because the base is still there. Seriously, thanks for posting. Made me realise how much of an art there is to this.

    All of those are fun in context, but the truly impressive thing is the straight steal of home, of which I counted 4 in this video (sadly including one by the Red Sox against my Yankees, which I watched live and still remember). The one straight steal against the right hander was truly remarkable though. That has to be up there with perfect games and unassisted triple plays as amongst the rarest feats in baseball.

    • @howardbaxter2514
      @howardbaxter2514 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Straight steals of home on right handed pitchers are really rare, but what is more rare is the home run cycle. Nearly happened last year when someone had a solo, two 2-runs, and a grand slam. In minor league baseball, the home run cycle has only happened once by a guy named Tyrone Horne (July 27, 1998 for Double-A Arkansas Travelers).

    • @40horsejohnson
      @40horsejohnson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's so rare that most people might not realize what it means. For those that don't, it means a 1 run homer, a two run homer, a 3 run homer and a grand slam for four. (They don't have to be in order, of course.) Horne is the only player to ever do it, and the bat he used is in the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown.

    In my mind, a lot of them are not stealing home. Maybe *technically* by the letter of the rule they are, but not in my mind when there's 15 throws around the diamond. That's just sloppy fundamentals.
    One of the best was missing, Jason Werth taking it on the throw back to the pitcher.

      If the runner was going before the pitch then it would be a SB instead of a WP or PB.
      If it is a pickoff attempt then it is a SB on any advancement as long as nobody is put out. The putout would be a CS if there was any movement towards the next base, a PkOff if there was no movement towards the next base and everyone else that advances would be marked as Advance On Throw.

    • @ProYagu
      @ProYagu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan Nolan Plenty of bunts still happen, mostly by pitchers though. Granted, I'm a Pirates fan, so small ball is still alive and well for me.

    • @noryno9
      @noryno9 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ProYagu sure, it's just not nearly as prevalent as it used to be. Unfortunately now it's just about the long ball. Look at what A LOT of teams do now with the "shift." There is no one on the left side of second base, all because most of the power hitters can't even hit to the opposite field to save their life, which is a shame. You NEVER saw something like that even 15 years ago. Pull pull pull, that's all they can do!

    • @colinbeazley7309
      @colinbeazley7309 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a little late, but my favorite play in baseball is someone beating a lefty-pull shift by bunting it down the third base line. Stealing home is pretty darn cool though.

    One of the most exciting plays in sports. I didn't play baseball very long, but played it all during my youth. I was a very quick kid who was also pretty tiny. So my strike zone was small so I'd get on base a lot via walks, bunts, or neatly placed bloopers into the shallow part of the outfield. I remember my coach one time told me to, if I got walked, to run as fast as I could straight to first and keep going to second. I forget if it worked or not but let's just say that it did.

    how bout the vid of jakie Robinson stealing home

  • @joemarshall4226
    @joemarshall4226 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I was a kid playing ball, our best defense against a first and third double steal was for the catcher to throw the ball low and hard to the second baseman, but have the pitcher cut the ball off and throw it back to the catcher, nailing the runner at home. It worked all the time. I only saw it tried once at the major league level and it worked then, also. I don't know why they either fake the throw, or throw down to second most of the time, neither of which work, almost ever. Plus, if you used the pitcher-cut off play once or twice, and it gets around the league, the pitcher can FAKE the cut-off, which makes the guy on third hold his ground, and you still have a chance for the runner at second.

    Fun idea..... a right-handed batter (who knows the steal is on), purposely misses a bunt, but doesn't move and instead kind of opens his legs for the runner to slide through. The catcher would have a hell of a time trying to tag him out around the batter........ LOL

    Ty Cobb holds the major league career record of 54 steals of home. He also holds the A.L record of stealing 2nd, 3rd
    and home 4 times. Babe Ruth stole home 10 times. The N.L. career record is 33 by the Pirates Max Carey. When Pete
    Reiser of the Dodgers wasn't running face first into walls he was pretty adept at stealing home. He holds the single season
    record with 7 steals of home in 1946.

    OK..so you supposedly had to add the last one because it was a classic. That doesn't mean you had to add annoying music to it. There is nothing wrong with some silence in a video. Always MUCH better than really loud annoying "I will always be a virgin" music.

    MLB is really going to miss the K.C. Royals team of the past few years in 2018. Their style of play epitomized the "small ball" approach that every sports radio caller and host lovingly eulogizes 24/7, 7 months of every year, across this Nation. Gonna miss that intensity.
    (I say this not as a Royals fan, just another distant admirer).

      You obviously haven't played at a high enough level to understand when you are pitching and you see while in your motion that someone's stealing, you're trying to get it in there instead of controlling yourself. Twice last season I hit 2 people when they were doing bunt squizes because you're jus trying to get it in.

  • @guyfroml

    I think it is safe to say that when someone hears the term "stealing home" they are thinking of what is a "suicide" steal, where there is no other play involved preceding the runner breaks home from third (such as after a pick off move, etc.). With that being clarified, the only "true" (suicide) steals of home in this clip are at 1:35, 3:48, 4:28 and the final segment at 4:47.

  • @timkjazz

    Rod Carew, under the tutelage of Billy Martin, was a great stealer of home, recording 7 steals of home in 1969, one below the record by Ty Cobb of 8 in 1912. If Carew had not blown out his knee in 1970 and lost some of his speed he may have set the all-time record for steals in a season.

  • @DuaneCollicott

    From MLB.com: "However, if he was attempting to steal as a wild pitch/passed ball was thrown, he is generally given credit for it." I like this. If the runner starts before the he knows it's a wild pitch or passed ball, give him credit for the steal. Although it does say, "generally," so that probably means there's some allowance for the scorekeeper to say he wouldn't have been anywhere close to succeeding, and so score it a WP or PB.

  • @MrBeatboxmasta
    @MrBeatboxmasta 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess looking on the ground, is more important than keeping an eye on the runner at third or even keeping an eye at home, in case the catcher indicates that the runner is trying to steal. If I was the manager, I would remind the pitcher to keep his sight on what's actually important and to change his ritual.

    I play men's league slow pitch softball, I play for one reason: It's not for the workout, the beer, the women, its not to hit home runs or win games or championships, I don't play for the glory or comradery, I play because there is nothing better in the world than seeing the look on the faces in the opposing dugout when you steal home

  • @marmac2768
    @marmac2768 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    On several of those double steals, I watched MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL players screw up, big time!!! When the first throw is made to the first baseman and the runner on first goes down toward second, he needs to throw the ball to the second baseman, particularly if the runner has stopped. Most of the time, the fielder throws the ball too soon and that allows the runner on third to "creep" down toward the plate. The thing is to get the ball AHEAD of the runner, the second baseman, then let him run the runner back towards first. All the while, he is watching the guy on third. if he gets down too far, give up on the runner at first and start running toward the runner coming down the line. DON'T THROW THE BALL YET!! Run at him getting him to commit and then throw it to either the catcher, if he is running home OR to the shortstop who is covering third and you have an out. The runner at first may get second, but you have the lead runner out and you are in a better position. I was really amazed at how these guys screwed up a fundamental of baseball. You shouldn't throw the ball more than twice during this entire run down.

    The 'Straight Steal of Home' is indeed a lost art. Maybe the most famous was Jackie Robinson with Brooklyn Dodgers stealing home during the 1955(?) World Series in YankeeStadium-I recall the replays showing Yogi Berra going into a tirade because he was called safe-he looked out to me. But the greatest was Rod Carew-he had 7 in 1969.

    The optimum is a left handed pitcher and a right handed batter (stealing home). Some righties get lazy and a slow delivery (not a slow pitch) is costly. Example Luis Tiant was easy pickins, so is any sub-mariner.
