guys! if you using newer version of Maya, Shadow Catcher has changed to Shadow Matte, it's still in the shader tab, and the basic concept is the same as the video, but you don't need to do that extra two steps now. Still, this is a excellent tutorial! Very well explained
Great tutorial.... another tip... Try and match the lights to what is going on in the cleanplate (background). If the shadows are casting in a specific direction, make sure your lights do the same.
simple question, will you time your focal length if you we're using a camera that is not 35mm film back? for example, I have a sony a6300, it is a-spc camera, in photography world we usually x1.5 to know the "real focal length. Thank you!
+MrGamerChoi Hi, yes that's correct. Just google your camera and find the crop factor. So if it's 1.5, then times that by your focal length to get the correct focal length mm.
Hi, I know what you are looking for. Unfortunately, no one on TH-cam knows how to do that. But I have seen someone do that by isolating the reflection alone from the background and re-composite it in Nuke on a different background. They never explained how they got that pass/aov out nicely on a transparent background with the falloff perfectly. If you have hot this solution, pls share with me.
thank you too much put i have a problem ....when i load a plane to the camera and render its looks too bright how i make my color management right i use maya 2016 and arnold please help
Hey so in previous maya versions, one would use the "Use Background" shader and it also masked whatever went through it. Lets say character's foot goes through the ground the foot wouldnt be visible or it would seem to go into the ground. This shadow catcher shader doesnt do any of that. I cant seem to get use background shader to work with arnold, do you have any suggestions?
there are lot of things that arnold doesnt do. A major one is transparency with materials. Hang on for mental ray in maya 2018. A lot of things could have been implemented but they just didn't care.

Can you do one for Reflection Catcher? To cat reflection on the floor.
Thanks its helpful
This tutorial is great, however, I do have one question, how do I see my footage in the render?
either add it as an image plane or export the sequence and composite it onto the footage in after effects/nuke.
Can you use this Shadow catcher to also catch floor reflections?
+Concept Instinct yes you can maybe I can do a tutorial soon!
Pls let me know when you do the tutorial.
Thanks for sharing__ ♥
awesome!!!!
Solid. shot bru
thanks you, is very good
the actual tutorial starts on the last minute ur welcome
I wish someone would do this for C4D. I've wasted 3 hours looking for a solution since it always comes with the stupid black bg in AE
ty so much
Thx!
how to remove the Watermark from the batch render with Arnold??
You dont batch render. Use Render sequence.
Shadow catcher is not there in maya 2020....
Arnold 5?
Hypershader>Arnold>shader>surface>ai shadow catcher
