Maybe it's a result of personal fixations, but I think Frank's lyrics in this song can be interpreted through the lense of the climate crisis and the corresponding personal existentialist questioning. He begins by mentioning 'The markings on your surface, Your speckled face' which could reference the surface of the planet with its continents, national borders, and different geographical quirks. Following on to the next lines, this would of course make the 'Flawed crystals' the two ice-filled poles (maybe 'flawed' referencing the cracks and melting). 'I couldn't gauge your fears' sounds like an honest confession of not previously realising the ecological harm being caused by the default way of being in modern times, followed by the admission of not relating to his peers who presumably don't (yet) feel similarly affected by this reality. To cap off the verse and as a continuing theme throughout the song, Frank seems to admit in a doubtful manner while questioning his braveness the desire to 'live outside' or alternatively 'go to jail' as opposed to 'settle down' with 'two kids and a swimming pool'. He feels that these realisations might demand of him some changes to his way of life, but he's not sure if he is capable of committing to this change. Some of the lyrics towards the end are more esoteric in nature and the possibilities of interpretation grow, but I haven't been able to 'unsee/unhear' this specific theme and topic laid out by the poignant beginning of the song. It's of course entirely possible that Frank never meant for these connections and specific themes to exist in the song, but I think it's still a testament of great songwriting for this to be a possibility. In conclusion; a beautifully contemplative song!
