I did the same trek twenty years ago. I hired a guide from Tirta Ganga . Last September we just returned to Bali and what a big change I experienced. It wasn't possible to go trekking up Agung because of the recent eruptions. A recall it was a great unforgettable experience.
I climbed mount agung with a guide 22 years ago . Not easy. Stunning climb . The guide I hired in Tirta Ganga, not expencive . We past by Besakhi Temple . At this time the mountain is closed to climbers because of earthquakes. It was a great experience.
Thanks for the comment. I can only imagine what it must have been like to hike this 22 years ago! I'm glad I made it up before the activity, hoping it begins to settle for the residents.
Just seen this comment too :) I'm trying to never have a 'regular' birthday party ever again. Last year my friends and I camped on top of a mountain for my 25th birthday and I promised myself Id put the effort in to make memories out of each birthday from there on.

Hey Patrick, I didn't use a tour company or at least if I did I'm not sure of the name. I was staying at roam.co and one of the guys their organized the transport and guide for me. I paid 1.2mil(can't remember 100%), I do remember the tour guides in town wanted me to pay over 2mil because I wanted to go by myself saying I would need to pay for 2 people. Do it if you can't, fantastic hike!

Hey, I did the Pura Pasar Agung route up to the crater Rim. I wasn't 100% sure on the different routes before going, there was ceremony all week and I nearly wasn't able to go, only finding out it was possible the day before. I would like to go back and do the other route starting from Besakih temple up to the real summit (i read that route is more challenging 6-7 hours up, Pura Pasar route was ~4hrs ). Unfortunately don't have the contact details for the guide, I was staying at Roam.co in Ubud and one of the Staff helped me find a reputable driver and guide. If you get a chance, go do it. Incredible experience, far better than Mt Batur in my opinion.
