True story. I became a carpenter because of Mike Holmes. One day I was watching ‘Holmes On Homes’ and it was the episode where Mike has to repair a house that wasn’t up to fire code. He was just in it for the money. I decided after watching that episode that I would learn how to fix and/or build my own home so I wouldn’t become a victim of that type of sociopathic thinking and complete lack of empathy. Years later I became a framing carpentry. Now I’m back at trade school taking joinery/cabinetmaking.

My dad is a now retired diesel mechanic, so I grew up watching him work on our cars, and he also is the person who taught me how to take things apart and also then put them back together. I ended up working in a vacuum cleaner store, because that's always been my true passion. Ultimately, now I don't really work with normal portable vacuums, my favorite vacuum cleaner growing up was my grandma's central vac... Definitely a trade that not many young people are getting into, but unlike what most people think, they are still popular and are being installed, and there are many more still out there that need service. I was terrified about the fact that I was now technically working on people's houses, not just their vacuums. Learning more about how houses are built, and how things are put together has made it less intimidating, especially installing them into existing houses. Rough ins are easy to see everything, but a retrofit means you can't see into the wall until you cut a hole.
When I was little, my brother was given a book Readers Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual, big hard cover yellow book that I would sit and read for hours! Then tv shows like This Old House and Holmes on Homes came along and I could not get enough. Although I never entered the construction trade, I don’t pay anyone to do something I can learn to do myself! From TH-cam to HVAC forums to learn how to size the supply and return when we got a new high efficient furnace. I am grateful to those who want to teach us “How to” anything!
It’s about time!! I’ve been waiting for years for you to get mike on the channel. I’ve watched him from the very beginning. I have been in the trades from the age of 13 remodeling with my uncle. I used to ride the bus to remodel houses with my friend’s dad because we were too young to drive. Im now in my late 40s, General Contractor, HVAC Contractor & Plumbing Contractor. I guess you could say I’m one of those kids that touched everything. I have had well over 30 apprentices over the years and just recently got a 19 year old into the plumbing trade. It is my passion to teach and introduce the younger generation to the trades as a career. Thank you for doing this Matt I was so excited to listen to Mikes daughter Sherry and see the passion she has for the trades. I appreciate all that you’re doing for our community.

Dang Matt showin up with full energy for a podcast after a 14hr drive, the man is a flippin machine!! TBH Im mid20s recovered from homelessness and a bottle of vodka a day about 2y ago (probably wouldnt be here if I hadnt) re-learning what real life is, and reconnecting with my highest potential - I learn sooo much watching the way he does things. I'm not in the trades, but as an engineering-minded person, I'm a huge fan of Mike and his commitment to doing things the best way we know of today. I "tinker" on the weekends, and yes, my ultimate self is probably a tradesperson I'll never be, but thank God I find trades-like outlets on the weekend around my house, and I always take my time to do the research and do the best I can to approach the "best" way. And, when something needs to be done the right way, I know to call in a tradesperson/craftsperson who can do it the way it needs to be done to stand the test of time. I was talked out of architecture/contracting as a career by my boomer parents, but I'm glad I get a chance to have a taste of it on the weekends. And I'm encouraging my elementary-aged sons, who both exhibit the interests Mike highlights here, to explore leadership roles in the trades. These are the last things that are going to be automated away, and they are SO cool. I'm so passionate about helping kids that want to apply the tech of today to time-tested artistry.

Watching Holmes on Homes is one of the things that resolved me to buy a fixer house (plus it was what I could afford). I had a friend make me an 8x10 cross stitch of Mike's logo with "Mike Says Make It Right" underneath which hangs on my kitchen wall, and every time I open a wall or rewire a light, I repeat that mantra.

I just had this discussion with my daughter yesterday. I pointed out that if you go into the trades, especially construction, or food service, you can always find a job...anywhere. There will always be something being built, or needing repaired. People will always need to eat.
@Mattrisinger I'm a 30 year old framing carpenter, I love bringing in Gen Zers into construction and tradeswork, they find the work fun and exciting and are able to take pride in themselves for doing something difficult and different from their peers!
Hi Matt, Great episode keep up the good work. We definitely need more kids in the trades. Something I should think you should touch on in a future episode is the fact that the skills that are acquired in any given trade are transferable to another. I think some kids are afraid that they'll be stuck as a carpenter for 40 years if they pick up a hammer. The skills that are acquired working with your hands are cumulative, valuable, and will be recognized by employers in any trade.

Just had my custom home built in SC by a builder how has many certificates on the walls and did walk through of his homes being built $$$$. I found out the hard way he did not live up to my expectations I lived 700 miles away and was hoping that he was looking out for my best interests. I GC a home 20 yrs ago and the contractors I used ten times better then his contractors that he had a long relationship with. The contractors did whatever they wanted not what needed to do. Now I'm trying to get everything fixed 🤞.Many code violations to be fixed.Thanks Matt and Mike for what you do👍Keep up the good work
Thanks for the video. The best thing I had someone tell me in my job was " It will take you 7 years to learn that you do not know everything" This was told to me when I went from furniture CNC 19 years to Metal CNC. What I was told when I switch to metal also would be good for any job you have there is lots to learn, do not go to a job thinking you know everything, go to a job with the mind set you are there to learn, and people will teach you.

Love this series, thanks to Matt for putting this out and partnering with Mike was such an awesome surprise! I think it would be awesome to hear from some successful tradespeople that have made career changes into the trades from something very different. As someone who works as a software engineer and feel like I would be happier in the trades, it would be awesome to hear from some who have had similar experiences and found success in the trades.
It's probably already been said. But bring these trades back into the school systems, to where the kids can get hands on education before they have to make it as adults in the real world.. I feel since it was removed from education, it has made it to where the kids have no real clue of what they want in life.. I have been around every single trade that was mentioned in this video. And I've had my hands in almost all of them. But as stated, some of them were not for me.. Thank you for the video Matt Risinger.
Her clarifying “new construction” plumbing when discussing favorite trades is absolutely important. I plumbed jobbing, repair and renovation and it a whole different experience than new. Crawlspaces, sanitary line problems, valves failing and flooding risk are all on a different level. No me gusta. Great video and cool to see your big collabs. I would say next step is TV show for you but I don’t think TV exists anymore.
I as an owner -builder - waiting for grandchildren have to give credit to Mike and yourself and the build show Period Yahovah has blessed me with 4 2 girls 2 boys and let me tell you about all the adoptable children out there.
In Canada the demand is vastly higher, we are really low on housing and immigration is getting higher. Getting in the trades is definitely lucrative, and lack of competition means employers can't really boss you around. Not to mention apprentice pay and Canada grants will easily cover schooling and living expanses. Coming out of school debt free and making close to 3 figures as journeyman is pretty nice.
I still have my old first corded drywall screw gun and little black and decker router we were all using before rotozip were widespread and affordable. We adapted a small collet to hold drywall zip bits and took off the handles.
I actually started in the trades taking vocational classes in high school and apprenticed under my oldest brother right out of high school. He was a drywall journeyman at the time. Mike's first TV show came a few years later. I learned so much more watching Mike.
Awesome video, looking forward to the series! HVAC (kinda biased haha) is a great trade that exposes one a little of the other trades. A great HVAC guy/gall is a good mechanic, plumber, electrician, carpenter, and sometimes drywall person 😂.
I would do almost anything to sit, have a beer, and talk with Mike Holmes for a few hours just about life. But, also some trade stuff too lol.... What an amazing guy! Great video!
I would love to see you talk with Mike from the Spray Jones YT channel. Super informative videos about all things spray foam and really gets down into the nitty gritty of the what / why / how with all things spray foam, even flash and batt systems! But I'd love to hear his insight on spray foam as a vocation and industry as well, combined with your experience.
I have been doing various forms of carpentry since the late 80's. It is a great gig. Come join us kids. Sure there are ups and downs and i don't love everything i do but i work with and for great people 90 percent of the time. We do some boring projects and some filthy projects and some really fucking epic projects. "We learn as we touch every single home" perfect sentiment.
This was a great episode and off to a captivating start on this educational series. Looking forward for the upcoming guests to hear their experience and provide word of advice on becoming a professional trades person.

There is no doubt that Mike has massive abilities.... but I prefer to see someone on your shows that has the same respect as you to not cuss. Sad thing I just watched a news article about how a housing project that was promoted by Mike Holmes has a lawsuit as there is some that was so badly built that it was better to just tear them down after only a couple years
The problems are many. We used to be craftsmen, then tradesmen, then labor, now craft. Doesn't sound like much, but each time the title changed the importance of craftsmen diminished. Next, with what was said above. The pay has diminished along with each change. Benefits also diminished. Standing in the community also diminished. The conditions haven't improved much at all in 50 years. I have worked in construction from homes to commercial to industrial to nuclear to space programs. I went to school at night for 5 years and worked days. Worked in extream cold ,heat, rain, snow. And used port o lets in this weather, 80% of that time with on place to wash your hands when it was freezing cold the water was also. The port o lets where almost always filthy. No place to take a break or lunch. My grandchildren came out of college got jobs that pay way more to start than I make now and they work indoors with carpet climate controlled inviroment very nice bathrooms break rooms. Very nice Benefits. So these are reasons younger people don't even consider construction. Not to mention being tied to the ups and downs of construction. I have friends who have worked in Canada. The construction craftsmen have way better conditions, pay, and standing. Oh , and you can never do enough for some. Most just want it thrown in. Nothing like what you and your contractors do. You have to admit most contractors you wouldn't want on your job. It may be his men it may be his wallet. Hope this helps
I have been trying to find a way to get involved as a mid 40 year old woman. In highschool, I was pushed into college. But I was always creative and hands on and that’s what motivated me. I have wasted 23 years acting like a zombie for a career and 2 jobs that I loathed-I referred to my last job as my longest lasting most abusive relationship ever and admitted that I stayed with it “for the kids”. 🤣 my problem is that I’m running into age and lack of tech school education/experience as I try to find an opening to delve into a carpentry end of the trades. Any recommendations or ideas for someone like me in the US?
I would always tell my apprentices that you will be a great apprentice at the end of two years. You will have no idea how to be a good tradesman till you do it for a while and learn how to be a tradesman. Same with journeyman and master levels. But you have to learn how to fill the shoes you are wearing now. You will never learn how to fill the shoes someone else is wearing. Be the best plumber and not the “good enough” plumber. Good enough is a nice way of saying you are okay with half ass. You can do everything perfect and still fail, that isn’t a reflection on the character of the man, it’s just life, it’s what you do afterwards that defines you.
I still remember my first really good power tool gifted to me by my neighbors. I was about 10, and I enjoyed building atrocities with my borrowed stick welder from my uncle and a Milwaukee 4.5"grinder from my neighbor. Eventually after a few months of borrowing that grinder my neighbor gifted it to me in its red metal Milwaukee box. I used it for about another 15 years before making the mistake of hitting the chuck stop with grinder running and the metal case broke open😢.
Loved this Matt. It's so great to see trades people encouraging people to get onto trades and not bashing those that chose another way. So I wasn't keen on the "get a degree and work at the car rental place" stereotype. You can do better, the rest of this video and all your other ones show that. Keep up the great work!
Cletus McFarland (very large Racecar driver on TH-cam) is going to be building a house and was asking for suggestions on the details aspect. I suggested you to help him along with all the fine details. He lives in central Florida which has a very similar climate to where you are in Texas. Don’t know if you could reach out to him and, maybe do a collaboration.
Mike Holmes seems like he is probably a very good builder on his own jobs, but he definitely plays up his "I'm the only good contractor" shtick on camera. And he also seems perfectly fine with endorsing mediocre products (and projects) for money.
I worked trades for 7 years as a commercial electrician before I went to engineering school. Its only a career if you can handle project management after years of working hard. The day I decided to quit I was digging a ditch next to my 60 yeqr old supervisor and said that wasnt going to be me. Sure I managed some smaller jobs in that time but if you cant move up you will end up breaking your back in a retirement age and having nothing to show for yourself. Its very risky as a life choice, although I think at least any man should spend a few years on a jobsite just to discover what they are capable of. Personally, my path was exactly correct and not planned at all. They are right in some respects for some, but mainly because someone has to do the job. Better pay and benefits is the step the construction industry is not willing to take, at least not yet.
There is a dichotomy of, needing new people, and guys in the trades who dont want any competition and dont want anyone else new changing things up. You can charge more and have more predictable business if there is less competition. Even if you dont own the business and are employee, slow things down and you make more money. Even if you have a good attitude and work hard, you cant show up the bosses right hand guy because then he has to work hard, and boss isnt going to fire that guy because he knows the business.
6:58 my dad was a trim carpenter until the 2008 housing debacle forced him into retirement. He told me at some point he regretted not taking me to work with him during summer breaks from school, so I could learn what he did. Just like Mike said; Dad wanted a "better" opportunity for me. But now Dad sees it as at least something I could have used as a fallback job or career. That would've been more like 40 years ago.
Another great incentive for going trades, is it is cheaper to get training, and you can work part-time on a jobsite getting paid experience while you are in school. With a high paying job at the end. You won't be a barrista with a phd!
I so appreciate the intent of this series, I think it's a fantastic idea and I intend to share with my kids who I believe would be great candidates for the trades. However, I have to be honest that my kids who would be very interested would likely lose interest because of the length of the video.

Education is good, keep learning, perhaps use the knowledge of your degree, and take that to your next learning opportunity in the trades. You are doing great.
I have been installing flooring for 25 years and it’s really hard to find young kids that want to learn this trade or any trade even though I tell him they can make over six figures they don’t do manual labor
Cool concept, the title is very long/confusing at first glance though. Suggestion: "Talking Trades: Intro w/ Mike & Sherry Holmes". "Intro" can then be replaced with things like plumbing, electrical, HVACC, etc/etc.
What too many kids are missing out on today is that you can do community college or intern for Trades, ALWAYS have those skills to fund higher education if they desire later rather than strap themselves with hundreds of thousands of dollars for a "paper" degree they cant get a job with because they have no working experience!

I noticed you didnt bring up union trade jobs vs non union. We're up here in the PNW, my son is a commercial electrician in the union and has been out of work for months. The union wont allow him to work any electrical jobs and with 150 electricians on the books he wont be working for a while.
If there were more people Like Mike Holmes leading the trades then we’d have more young people in the trades. There was a whole 2 generations of red faced abusers that really hurts the recruitment of the newer generation and I’m glad they are phasing out.
Great content i love the channel, if anything for constructive critisism as a show with over a million subscribers and promoting professional trades you may want to hire a professional videographer, i get on site location shooting but this type of setting i'd expect better camera work
I loved how they encouraged women to join the trades. Please dont assume all women are delicate. What sold me on my wife was her willingness to go in a filthy crawl space with me to cut out and replace a termite damaged girder. Didnt complain once Love her
How about speaking on the mafia known as the union. As a teenager in Ontario, becoming an electrician is harder than becoming a doctor because of the gatekeeping union membership rules. Can’t get a job without being in a union. Can’t be in the union without job experience.
Lots of luck. The Post office retains about 22% of newly trained hirees. They quit because of physical labor and extreme heat and cold conditions. If you're raised on a smart phone, please do not try and retain a job with extreme physical requirements.
Tradesmen need to start training people. I've actually had a few people who were interested in joining a trade and all of them got told by the places they reached out to that they were only hiring experienced folks. Apparently, people need help, but are not willing to train.
Im 42 and I'd call myself a good teacher . However, the work ethic of these young ones is terrible: the smoke breaks, the phones...so frustrating. The best helper I have is a guy whose 68 and partially retired, but a darn hard worker.

The problem in the states is the school system. 1) " College is what you want, you kink comouters , don't you?). 2) In New Jeresy they had ,( don't know if they still do), Vocational Technology schools. Problem is to get into it you have to be a junior in High School. If you get in it's only 1/2 days. There are no signs around the school explaining what VoTech is. The schools don't want the students going to VoTech because then they only get 1/2 the money from the state fir those students. We need help from the school systems but there is an effort in the US to push students into charter schools with vouchers and let the public school system collapse.
There is a big push for Charter schools because the public schools are failing miserably.....But, they are good at indoctrinating children with leftist lunacy

I "tinker" on the weekends, and yes, my ultimate self is probably a tradesperson I'll never be, but thank God I find trades-like outlets on the weekend around my house, and I always take my time to do the research and do the best I can to approach the "best" way. And, when something needs to be done the right way, I know to call in a tradesperson/craftsperson who can do it the way it needs to be done to stand the test of time. I was talked out of architecture/contracting as a career by my boomer parents, but I'm glad I get a chance to have a taste of it on the weekends. And I'm encouraging my elementary-aged sons, who both exhibit the interests Mike highlights here, to explore leadership roles in the trades. These are the last things that are going to be automated away, and they are SO cool. I'm so passionate about helping kids that want to apply the tech of today to time-tested artistry.
Check out the CBC program on ‘Holmes Approved Homes’ . It's criminal. Holmes used people and their gullibility to sell homes so bad they had to be razed to the ground. Then he did nothing to help. They got USED!! Holmes did not even respond. Matt's endorsement of Holmes makes Matt Risinger just as bad as Holmes. I have now lost all respect and credibility for Risinger.
Watching Holmes on Homes is one of the things that resolved me to buy a fixer house (plus it was what I could afford). I had a friend make me an 8x10 cross stitch of Mike's logo with "Mike Says Make It Right" underneath which hangs on my kitchen wall, and every time I open a wall or rewire a light, I repeat that mantra.
My wife and I both quit teaching to work in construction. Glad to see you all illuminating the opportunity for women to join the party!

I just had this discussion with my daughter yesterday. I pointed out that if you go into the trades, especially construction, or food service, you can always find a job...anywhere. There will always be something being built, or needing repaired. People will always need to eat.

Hi Matt, Great episode keep up the good work. We definitely need more kids in the trades. Something I should think you should touch on in a future episode is the fact that the skills that are acquired in any given trade are transferable to another. I think some kids are afraid that they'll be stuck as a carpenter for 40 years if they pick up a hammer. The skills that are acquired working with your hands are cumulative, valuable, and will be recognized by employers in any trade.

Just had my custom home built in SC by a builder how has many certificates on the walls and did walk through of his homes being built $$$$. I found out the hard way he did not live up to my expectations I lived 700 miles away and was hoping that he was looking out for my best interests. I GC a home 20 yrs ago and the contractors I used ten times better then his contractors that he had a long relationship with. The contractors did whatever they wanted not what needed to do. Now I'm trying to get everything fixed 🤞.Many code violations to be fixed.Thanks Matt and Mike for what you do👍Keep up the good work

The best thing I had someone tell me in my job was " It will take you 7 years to learn that you do not know everything" This was told to me when I went from furniture CNC 19 years to Metal CNC. What I was told when I switch to metal also would be good for any job you have there is lots to learn, do not go to a job thinking you know everything, go to a job with the mind set you are there to learn, and people will teach you.

Love this series, thanks to Matt for putting this out and partnering with Mike was such an awesome surprise! I think it would be awesome to hear from some successful tradespeople that have made career changes into the trades from something very different. As someone who works as a software engineer and feel like I would be happier in the trades, it would be awesome to hear from some who have had similar experiences and found success in the trades.
It's probably already been said. But bring these trades back into the school systems, to where the kids can get hands on education before they have to make it as adults in the real world.. I feel since it was removed from education, it has made it to where the kids have no real clue of what they want in life..

Her clarifying “new construction” plumbing when discussing favorite trades is absolutely important. I plumbed jobbing, repair and renovation and it a whole different experience than new. Crawlspaces, sanitary line problems, valves failing and flooding risk are all on a different level. No me gusta.

You guys nailed it. I’ve got 40 years in the trade and it’s almost impossible to find youth to get in the trades.
In Canada the demand is vastly higher, we are really low on housing and immigration is getting higher. Getting in the trades is definitely lucrative, and lack of competition means employers can't really boss you around. Not to mention apprentice pay and Canada grants will easily cover schooling and living expanses. Coming out of school debt free and making close to 3 figures as journeyman is pretty nice.
I still have my old first corded drywall screw gun and little black and decker router we were all using before rotozip were widespread and affordable. We adapted a small collet to hold drywall zip bits and took off the handles.
I actually started in the trades taking vocational classes in high school and apprenticed under my oldest brother right out of high school. He was a drywall journeyman at the time. Mike's first TV show came a few years later. I learned so much more watching Mike.
Awesome video, looking forward to the series! HVAC (kinda biased haha) is a great trade that exposes one a little of the other trades. A great HVAC guy/gall is a good mechanic, plumber, electrician, carpenter, and sometimes drywall person 😂.
I would do almost anything to sit, have a beer, and talk with Mike Holmes for a few hours just about life. But, also some trade stuff too lol.... What an amazing guy! Great video!
I would love to see you talk with Mike from the Spray Jones YT channel. Super informative videos about all things spray foam and really gets down into the nitty gritty of the what / why / how with all things spray foam, even flash and batt systems! But I'd love to hear his insight on spray foam as a vocation and industry as well, combined with your experience.

I have been doing various forms of carpentry since the late 80's. It is a great gig. Come join us kids. Sure there are ups and downs and i don't love everything i do but i work with and for great people 90 percent of the time. We do some boring projects and some filthy projects and some really fucking epic projects. "We learn as we touch every single home" perfect sentiment.

Sad thing I just watched a news article about how a housing project that was promoted by Mike Holmes has a lawsuit as there is some that was so badly built that it was better to just tear them down after only a couple years
The problems are many.
We used to be craftsmen, then tradesmen, then labor, now craft.
Doesn't sound like much, but each time the title changed the importance of craftsmen diminished.
Next, with what was said above.
The pay has diminished along with each change. Benefits also diminished. Standing in the community also diminished.
The conditions haven't improved much at all in 50 years.
I have worked in construction from homes to commercial to industrial to nuclear to space programs.
I went to school at night for 5 years and worked days. Worked in extream cold ,heat, rain, snow.
And used port o lets in this weather, 80% of that time with on place to wash your hands when it was freezing cold the water was also. The port o lets where almost always filthy. No place to take a break or lunch.
My grandchildren came out of college got jobs that pay way more to start than I make now and they work indoors with carpet climate controlled inviroment very nice bathrooms break rooms. Very nice Benefits.
So these are reasons younger people don't even consider construction. Not to mention being tied to the ups and downs of construction.
I have friends who have worked in Canada. The construction craftsmen have way better conditions, pay, and standing.
Oh , and you can never do enough for some. Most just want it thrown in.
Nothing like what you and your contractors do. You have to admit most contractors you wouldn't want on your job.
It may be his men it may be his wallet.

I have been trying to find a way to get involved as a mid 40 year old woman. In highschool, I was pushed into college. But I was always creative and hands on and that’s what motivated me. I have wasted 23 years acting like a zombie for a career and 2 jobs that I loathed-I referred to my last job as my longest lasting most abusive relationship ever and admitted that I stayed with it “for the kids”. 🤣 my problem is that I’m running into age and lack of tech school education/experience as I try to find an opening to delve into a carpentry end of the trades. Any recommendations or ideas for someone like me in the US?
I would always tell my apprentices that you will be a great apprentice at the end of two years. You will have no idea how to be a good tradesman till you do it for a while and learn how to be a tradesman. Same with journeyman and master levels. But you have to learn how to fill the shoes you are wearing now. You will never learn how to fill the shoes someone else is wearing. Be the best plumber and not the “good enough” plumber. Good enough is a nice way of saying you are okay with half ass. You can do everything perfect and still fail, that isn’t a reflection on the character of the man, it’s just life, it’s what you do afterwards that defines you.
I still remember my first really good power tool gifted to me by my neighbors. I was about 10, and I enjoyed building atrocities with my borrowed stick welder from my uncle and a Milwaukee 4.5"grinder from my neighbor. Eventually after a few months of borrowing that grinder my neighbor gifted it to me in its red metal Milwaukee box. I used it for about another 15 years before making the mistake of hitting the chuck stop with grinder running and the metal case broke open😢.
Loved this Matt. It's so great to see trades people encouraging people to get onto trades and not bashing those that chose another way. So I wasn't keen on the "get a degree and work at the car rental place" stereotype. You can do better, the rest of this video and all your other ones show that.

I suggested you to help him along with all the fine details. He lives in central Florida which has a very similar climate to where you are in Texas. Don’t know if you could reach out to him and, maybe do a collaboration.

Mike Holmes seems like he is probably a very good builder on his own jobs, but he definitely plays up his "I'm the only good contractor" shtick on camera. And he also seems perfectly fine with endorsing mediocre products (and projects) for money.

I worked trades for 7 years as a commercial electrician before I went to engineering school. Its only a career if you can handle project management after years of working hard. The day I decided to quit I was digging a ditch next to my 60 yeqr old supervisor and said that wasnt going to be me. Sure I managed some smaller jobs in that time but if you cant move up you will end up breaking your back in a retirement age and having nothing to show for yourself. Its very risky as a life choice, although I think at least any man should spend a few years on a jobsite just to discover what they are capable of. Personally, my path was exactly correct and not planned at all. They are right in some respects for some, but mainly because someone has to do the job. Better pay and benefits is the step the construction industry is not willing to take, at least not yet.
There is a dichotomy of, needing new people, and guys in the trades who dont want any competition and dont want anyone else new changing things up. You can charge more and have more predictable business if there is less competition. Even if you dont own the business and are employee, slow things down and you make more money. Even if you have a good attitude and work hard, you cant show up the bosses right hand guy because then he has to work hard, and boss isnt going to fire that guy because he knows the business.
6:58 my dad was a trim carpenter until the 2008 housing debacle forced him into retirement. He told me at some point he regretted not taking me to work with him during summer breaks from school, so I could learn what he did. Just like Mike said; Dad wanted a "better" opportunity for me. But now Dad sees it as at least something I could have used as a fallback job or career. That would've been more like 40 years ago.
Another great incentive for going trades, is it is cheaper to get training, and you can work part-time on a jobsite getting paid experience while you are in school. With a high paying job at the end. You won't be a barrista with a phd!
I so appreciate the intent of this series, I think it's a fantastic idea and I intend to share with my kids who I believe would be great candidates for the trades. However, I have to be honest that my kids who would be very interested would likely lose interest because of the length of the video.

I have been installing flooring for 25 years and it’s really hard to find young kids that want to learn this trade or any trade even though I tell him they can make over six figures they don’t do manual labor

Cool concept, the title is very long/confusing at first glance though. Suggestion: "Talking Trades: Intro w/ Mike & Sherry Holmes". "Intro" can then be replaced with things like plumbing, electrical, HVACC, etc/etc.
What too many kids are missing out on today is that you can do community college or intern for Trades, ALWAYS have those skills to fund higher education if they desire later rather than strap themselves with hundreds of thousands of dollars for a "paper" degree they cant get a job with because they have no working experience!

Been watching Mike since Holmes on Homes in early 2000s. Used to think he was a good dude, but money made him distort his brand and take people’s money.
But ya we still need contractors.
I noticed you didnt bring up union trade jobs vs non union. We're up here in the PNW, my son is a commercial electrician in the union and has been out of work for months. The union wont allow him to work any electrical jobs and with 150 electricians on the books he wont be working for a while.

Like Mike Holmes leading the trades then we’d have more young people in the trades. There was a whole 2 generations of red faced abusers that really hurts the recruitment of the newer generation and I’m glad they are phasing out.
He's certainly popular in Canada but recently he's had many of his approved homes condemned.

How about speaking on the mafia known as the union. As a teenager in Ontario, becoming an electrician is harder than becoming a doctor because of the gatekeeping union membership rules. Can’t get a job without being in a union. Can’t be in the union without job experience.
Lots of luck. The Post office retains about 22% of newly trained hirees. They quit because of physical labor and extreme heat and cold conditions. If you're raised on a smart phone, please do not try and retain a job with extreme physical requirements.

Tradesmen need to start training people. I've actually had a few people who were interested in joining a trade and all of them got told by the places they reached out to that they were only hiring experienced folks. Apparently, people need help, but are not willing to train.
Im 42 and I'd call myself a good teacher .
However, the work ethic of these young ones is terrible: the smoke breaks, the phones...so frustrating.
The best helper I have is a guy whose 68 and partially retired, but a darn hard worker.

The problem in the states is the school system.
1) " College is what you want, you kink comouters , don't you?).
2) In New Jeresy they had ,( don't know if they still do), Vocational Technology schools. Problem is to get into it you have to be a junior in High School. If you get in it's only 1/2 days.
There are no signs around the school explaining what VoTech is. The schools don't want the students going to VoTech because then they only get 1/2 the money from the state fir those students.
We need help from the school systems but there is an effort in the US to push students into charter schools with vouchers and let the public school system collapse.
There is a big push for Charter schools because the public schools are failing miserably.....But, they are good at indoctrinating children with leftist lunacy
