this is because the point of cross is to poke holes in and sink the ship of whoever the witness is, whereas your own team is supposed to be getting your story out in your words, views and memory..which a leading question doesn't do as it gives you the answers in advance to your answer
but yes, they are allowed to do this, and ambers lawyers do it to other witnesses's on cross, openly trying to object to things allowed in a courtroom will progressively annoy a judge, you never...never want to annoy a judge, esp as a lawyer since they can and will bar you from their courtroom if they think you're acting in contempt, which can ultimately lead to you being removed from the bar
