Sports cars died out because their one gimmick, going fast, is no longer exclusive to them. In a market where the fastest non-sports car could accelerate to 60 in a scant 10 seconds, a 30 grand two seater that could reach it in half the time was impressive. But now, when literal tank sized mom wagons that can seat 7 full sized Americans can catch up, or outrun, modern sports cars at the same exact price point, sports cars are a much harder sell. So now they have to sell on 'feeling', and the vast majority of American wheel holders have as much feeling as numb hands wearing boxing gloves trying to read braille.
One of the best explanations of the current car world, and sadly most people’s ability to know the difference or to even be able to pay attention in the car long enough before they grab there phones lol.
Great vid! Lots of cars lately were doomed from the start. Integra Type S and Civic Type R are crazy overpriced, especially with dealer markups. Supra and Z are overpriced too, but I remember the 90’s Supra 2JZ being $60k at dealerships. Now, Mustang GT can hit $65k, and Benz CLA45s is close to $68k. If you drop $20k on any of these, reviews would totally change!
Unfortunately those prices can't come down for a variety of reasons. These vehicles use bespoke parts, and due to their extremely low volume of production, these parts are much more expensive to engineer, test, and manufacture. Secondly are fuel efficiency/emissions taxes, these vehicles fail those requirements, so they impose a tax that the consumer has to pay. I don't think anyone wants to sell a low volume car where they make a profit of 82 dollars per car, to compensate for how unpopular sports cars have become, they set the price however high they want, because those who want them will buy them. Their main source of revenue comes from massive, expensive SUVs which are absurdly cheap to produce due to how many of these they sell.
as some one who drove many of the JDM of the 90s when new, the nostalgia of the younger generation is greatly misplaced. those cars were awesome because they proved Japan had finally arrived. the tuning came along years later. especially outside of Japan. now, EVERYTHING is fast and awesome. also, most of the JDM powerhouses of the 90s were expensive when new.
