The eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake is a design seen on all Mexican coins. It dates back to Aztec times when the Mexica or Aztecs moved into the valley of Mexico. When searching for a place to build their capital, they saw an eagle perched on a cacti eating a snake. They called the site, Tenochtitlan, which became their capital and would remain their capital for the next 200 years until the Spanish conquest. Tenochtitlan got its name from Tenoch who was the leader of the Aztecs at that time.

Most people use the word Mexica and Aztec interchangeably. Mexica is the term the people known as the Aztecs called themselves. More specifically it was used to describe the ruling class, the ruler and the aristocracy. Aztec is the broader term to describe various tribes that banded together to form the Aztec Empire. The name Mexico is derived from the word Mexica and Aztec is derived from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs meaning " people of the heron place" where the Aztecs came from before moving into the Valley of Mexico.

I recently picked up a 1900 half eagle, very high mintage but beautiful coin. I was inspired from some of your older videos featuring pre 33 gold. Fantastic video with fascinating historic content. Do you know what the rules/restrictions/difficulties are for bring physical precious metals back to UK from Mexico. I regularly travel there on business?
Well, gold is easy because there is no import tax into the UK. The only thing you would have to do is declare you have more than £10,000 worth of cash or equivalent wealth on you when you enter - its just a declaration - no tax but they will know you have it!
I’ve been so tempted to buy one of these coins. But every time I see them, the color looks different. Can you make a comparison with a gold Eagle, Libertad or Maple? I’d much appreciate that
Always stay till the end, love a ramble . Always good information from you . I am now looking into to buying the 50 pesos piece . Also liked your thoughts on CGT as I’ve only ever bought CGT free gold so maybe time to expand into other pieces which I’ve always wanted to own .

I discovered these when they were 1500s ... Ive got all restrikes but , got about 16 of them love the design ,plus the extra .20 extra gold ...one of my favs ... can't get em for under 2k these days ...
Mexico revolted against Spain in 1810 under Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a parish priest who was put to death by the Spanish in 1811. One of his supporters, Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon took up the baton for independence. He proclaimed Mexico a republic but he also was put to death in 1816. The Spanish general who put Morelos to death was Gen Agustin de Iturbide, who ironically turned against the Spanish and proclaimed Mexico independent in 1821. A few months later, Iturbide proclaimed himself emperor of Mexico and began a 10 month despotic reign. So while Mexico became independent in 1821, the independence of Mexico is celebrated in 1810 rather than 1821
Thanks for the history. I checked the comments to make sure nobody had already made this correction. "Final Independence" was won *from Spain* in 1821, but then half the landmass lost it's independence to the US. Then they had to win their Independence back once again... from the French.
Ah yes, rub it in!! I sold my 50 pesos a few years back, one of the dumber things I have done. Now to buy one, I would be paying $1000 more! Live and learn
My favourite is the one I have in my hand at the point in time I am drooling over it. It is then given the name “The Precious “. Maybe I should get out more or it could just be a hobbit thing. Hard Core.
Absolutely beautiful coins - thank you for showcasing them. I just picked one up during Liberty Coin’s Black Friday sale for $2185! Spot was ~$1794 and I got $21.85 in eBay bucks from the purchase. I literally paid $0.30 total over spot for the coin 😎 they sold out within 30 minutes.
They most certainly are.....but also quite pricey when I am trying to keep to my 'coin budget'! I will have to wait for my boat to come in before I purchase one of these .....maybe in few month's time- but by then it could have gone up in price 😞
Hey! I have coin that saysits 50 pesos and 37.5Gr or Gn puro oro (pure gold) it has the year 1821 and 1947 but what I noticed it the star that is above the number 37.5 and it looks like this: * , could you tell me what this means?
Yeah they're awesome. I don't think I'll ever have one unless gold price falls. Don't think any local stores have had it or the vente peses for quite some time either so accuiring it with postage an all is just buying gold too expensive. Other great coins are French 100 franc (yeah quite high numismatic value) and personally I like the older Krugerrands - partly for personal reasons of my time in South Africa when I was kid but I also like the springbok very much. There's however something about the newer Krugerrands that just isn't as nice as the older ones. I got a 1983 and a 2018 both in very nice condition. While the 2018 in some respects has a higher degree of finish and "security micro text" it also clearly shines though that someone remade the design on computer where the older ones is clearly an analouge job made the old fashioned sculpting way - the modern one is lifeless in comparison. The font on the newer also looks like some serif font you'll find in Word etc. where as the older style is more vintage type writer font. Especielly the "U" isn't as nice as the older one. But for the prices. Even though I just bought two Danish 20 kroner (just over 1/4oz each) I've actually been hoping for the last 8 years for the prices to take a hit - that is how long I've been interested in gold and silver. The lower the price the better - just let the price fall with no bottom so I can buy more I won't be sad :D I've no plan selling my gold before many years from now so I don't mind falling prices.
The Mexican 50 pesos are beautiful, now get a Spanish gold piece of 8 to go with it. I have a piece of 8 silver Real, but the gold ones are awesome looking.
I found one on the floor and it says 1921 is it rare😩 but mine has no back and it looks like it was used as a necklace because it has a hole on the top

Well, gold is easy because there is no import tax into the UK. The only thing you would have to do is declare you have more than £10,000 worth of cash or equivalent wealth on you when you enter - its just a declaration - no tax but they will know you have it!
If I were to buy one more gold piece, it would be this one in UNC condition.
I’ve been so tempted to buy one of these coins. But every time I see them, the color looks different. Can you make a comparison with a gold Eagle, Libertad or Maple? I’d much appreciate that
These are 90% gold, so they will be different in tone to the modern 999 gold
If you managed to visit the Coin shop in Spain in Madrid, they have some nice gold coins there.
never expected it... but, it is my fav. coin too....... I like the more modern obverse (~2000's)
i have a 50 centenario. in corn gold colored. unfortunately I only find the copper-gold colored ones on the market.
Always stay till the end, love a ramble . Always good information from you . I am now looking into to buying the 50 pesos piece . Also liked your thoughts on CGT as I’ve only ever bought CGT free gold so maybe time to expand into other pieces which I’ve always wanted to own .
Thanks for being a ramble fan! CGT is a odd one, everyone is so afraid of it but it is not an issue really. Unless you have a mega stack.
Backyard Bullion agreed I think I will be less afraid and now looking forward to be doing some online shopping this evening. Ty byb .
I have 50 pesos from 1821للبيع
I ❤️ the gold 50 peso!! 👍🏽😃👑
HI BB. I LIKE THE 50 PESO CENTENARIO. IT IS MY FAVORITE GOLD BULLION COIN, AFTER THE AMERICAN GOLD BUFFALO. I HAVE RECOUPED MY PREMIUMS ON ALL OF MY CENTENARIO COINS. EVEN A PCGS 65+ HAS RECOUPED IT'S PREMIUM. THEY HAVE BEEN MY BEST BULLION BUYS. *TYU*
It is an amazing coins and I am glad to hear it is one of your favourites. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
They look stunning 😍. The Mexican 50 peso and the American Gold Buffalo are on my want list for sure. Thanks for making me jealous... I'm holding off on all precious metals purchasing at this time as I'm working on buying a house this summer.
Sorry for making you jealous! Good luck with the house!
Enjoy your videos and research... would you be able to do something about the 230 flowing hair medal?
Chances of me getting hold of one is next to zero, unfortunately.
I have one and so heavy to hold. Love it. 20 peso also lovely.
The weight is awesome and why I love them
Do these test out on the verifier okay? I hear Mexican silver is hit and miss, but gold is okay right?
That Hurts 😔😢
Same. I bought one at $1500 bucks and I just got another and I paid almost 2500
Same here. The one that got away. Bothers me still after 10 years or more. Gonna save for another.
Love your stacking! Keep stacking man. Sending love from Aus
Thanks my friend, same to you!
My favourite is the one I have in my hand at the point in time I am drooling over it. It is then given the name “The Precious “. Maybe I should get out more or it could just be a hobbit thing.
Hard Core.
You love all gold coins, that is good! Thanks for stopping by my little Hobbit friend!
Hi sir i have 2 coins 1821/1947
What karat gold is it?... I wana get one and put on a gold chain as well
The one I have seems to be thinner than the ones in this video .
Great channel many have tanked' Thank's Backyard Bullion
Thanks my friend, appreciate you stopping by!
They most certainly are.....but also quite pricey when I am trying to keep to my 'coin budget'! I will have to wait for my boat to come in before I purchase one of these .....maybe in few month's time- but by then it could have gone up in price 😞
Yes, they aint cheap that is for sure. If you have the budget for 1.2 oz gold and you can find them at a low premium I say they are amazing
The 1 oz gold Libertads are nice too
I saw one that said 1821 - 1923... what does that mean? is that one even older? or just commemorative??
You guys are rich ! 3 Centarious are a lot of money !!
This is my loan fpr 3-5 months.
👍⚪👍 a whole roll 😂😂😂 you'll get there soon enough 🔥🔥🔥🤑🤑
Hopefully before I kick the bucket we will have a BYB blunderbuss!
I have a 1 pic of same coin. That's are found in kuwait and it is old more than 200 years
Great video. Thanks for the review!
Its on list to purchase next year in 2022!
Got one...finally!
How much ?
I’m in the market for one
@@alvalv007 I paid $2,224 exactly, it’s a 1947
@@lethalwolf7455 nice 👍🏼…. Thx
Hey! I have coin that saysits 50 pesos and 37.5Gr or Gn puro oro (pure gold) it has the year 1821 and 1947 but what I noticed it the star that is above the number 37.5 and it looks like this: * , could you tell me what this means?
These are beautiful and I want to own one at some point.
Thanks for sharing all your information on those and other coins! Thanks for stopping by my friend!
I just inherited 6 of these coins and will like to know the real value, the internet have prices all over the place. Thanks
The Mexican 50 pesos are beautiful, now get a Spanish gold piece of 8 to go with it. I have a piece of 8 silver Real, but the gold ones are awesome looking.
I have one that the date says 1821 - 1945. Is that a normal date?
Hello, I have a piece I have kept since 1996, but it weighs 22g, is it fake
Nice!!! I have a 1923 it’s my favorite coin also.
So are those more than 1 Troy ounce? It looks like it says 37.5 grams pure gold to the right of the woman
Yeah, they are 1.205 Oz of gold, very nice size!
I found one on the floor and it says 1921 is it rare😩 but mine has no back and it looks like it was used as a necklace because it has a hole on the top
