I would only add that in 1954 after the communist party's victory against France, it was agreed at the Geneva conference that Vietnam would have elections in 1956 to fully reunify the country. But the US installed leader in the south refused to hold elections because many in both the North and South saw the communist party as the legitimate leader of the country. Instead, he tried to keep the country split, breaking with the 1954 Geneva agreement and which led to the war.
