This is an odd coincidence, but I just recommended you, Jeremy Jahns, and Chris Stuckmann to my Twitter followers this past week as being my favorite TH-cam film critics! I love how you all give honest, great film reviews! 🎞️🙌♥️
Hey Dan I just wanted to thank you. I am the guy you made a cameo video for who recently went blind. I really appreciated the video you made and the comments you made. You are right I can still definitely enjoy movies it’s just going to be different from now on. So thanks again for all of your thoughts and insights in the cameo video
Ticket prices are becoming more and more of a factor. It's crazy expensive to take your family to the movies. Most won't go more than once a month, if that. If the kids wanted to see Mario, and you know that MCU movies always hit Disney+ sooner than later, this might be skippable. However, I think ticket prices also make word-of-mouth more valuable than ever, and vol 3 is getting consistently great reactions from audiences.
i think word of mouth is gonna keep this movie going, same way it did for puss in boots. i don't know if i see it hitting 1 billion, but it think it will will do just as good as gotg2. definitely see it blowing out antman. i could be wrong, but i don't think it wil drop off next week like quantamania did. i dont know a single person irl who didnt love.
Luckily we still have $5 Tuesdays but the problem is everyone wants to go on Tuesday now so it forces you to buy your tickets early before they sell out. And when you buy early online they charge you a fee. So it always ends up being $15 for my gf and me instead of $10.

Anyone who is interested in film, TV and Hollywood in general should be subscribed. The coverage is better than anyone else I've seen and they are missing out by not having a watch.
Hey Dan, for the "MCU By CinemaScore Grade" Graphic, for each Grade I suggest making the films go from newest to oldest, left to right for relevancy purposes for the A & A- Grades where we don't see all the films
Personally, regardless of how well it does in the box office, I am just happy I saw an MCU thing that I genuinely wanted to see, and it ultimately worked out for me. The fact that I look forward to seeing this again soon is way more than I can say for a good chunk of the last MCU things which I was apathetic to or just plain didn't enjoy. I really feel this one is going to be the last MCU film I will care to see on the big screen immediately again. Talk about an end of an era. Also, normally would find it nice to see double features going, but there is something I really dislike about Disney tagging Quantumania with the higher anticipated GOTG3 to piggyback on ticket sales to make it look like it did better than it actually did. Well, least they won't have to say an R-Rated action flick beat them worldwide anymore.

The thing I'm really glad to see is that despite lots of new releases, Suzume still continues to play in theaters 🥳 I'm not an anime person but I really hope this film manages to find its way into the conversation for Best Animated Feature somehow come awards season 🤞
I'd say this for Guardians 3, it is also in the context of its own sub-franchise. Guardians 1 was basically universally beloved and Guardians 2 was a lot more of a split opinion by fans. This number may have more to do with reception of Volume 2 than reception of Quantumania
I lived in Lexington about a decade ago, I went to TKT to see Miyazaki’s the wind also rises. I was impressed with how nice of a theater it was considering it’s location (sorry Kentucky). I’m glad to see it’s still alive and kicking!
It's a solid opening and I hope that it has a chance to build an audience a little bit. I mean, I'm sure there are a lot of people who have decided to wait and see regarding the MCU. Maybe with this opening and the good word of mouth the movie is getting that it'll have a better than average hold next week and go on to a decent total box office. The fact that it's the final Guardians film, in this iteration of the characters and with James Gunn as director, hopefully has people coming back and because it's a bit more of an adult movie maybe that'll give it some decent legs. It deserves to do well. James Gunn has matured as a filmmaker and this is a gorgeous looking movie. Great story. A villain you really want to see get taken out. Although there's a lot of chatter from fans saying the High Evolutionary should be a Kang variant and swap him out with Majors and I don't hate that idea. Chukwudi Iwuji may not be the name that Jonathon Majors is (or was at least depending how things turn out) but after this performance he deserves a bright future in Hollywood.

So thrilled to see you highlighting the Kentucky Theater! This beautiful old theater is the sole place available for so, so many central and Eastern Kentuckians to see the types of movies normal movie theaters don't show. I look for any chance I can to go there. I once sat behind William Shatner as he gobbled down an entire large bucket of popcorn during a premiere there.
Knight of the Zodiac (Saint Seiya) was a popular anime pretty much anywhere but in North America. In the late 80s/early 90's is was one of the most popular anime for the children (mainly boys, but even some girls) of my generation in France (for people that are 40-50 year old now) I have no idea how it can perform, but I have low expectations
The reviews for it on IMDB have not been kind. I also have no faith in US adaptations of anime/manga series. But going in with low expectations might make me enjoy it more.
I saw it in France too 🙂 I don't think it's going to do great in the US. There was a revival tentative on Netflix a few years ago but it didn't work (the animation was terrible). But the trailer looks good. Looks like they tried to keep the story and the power effects as in the anime. I would give it a shot
Thanks, Dan, for the great segment on The Kentucky Theater. It's a real treasure of a place, and those managing it are the best. Fantastic movie lineups since they took over, plus awesome live events.
Amazing box office coverage. Glad you are getting the recognition you deserve! I don’t know if you take suggestions for the local theater segment, but I lived in Abilene, TX for a bit and really enjoyed the Paramount Theater. They have a slate of movies yearly that they play but also have local film festivals and more interactive affairs (sing-along White Christmas during the holidays). Love that you’re supporting the local theaters!
Dan, Jeremy jahns and Chris stuckmann are my 3 favourite film critics, movie buffs and overall incredible people. I won't rate you in any particular order because you three bring something different to the table that I enjoy. Hope you three collab someday.
I don't like Chris nearly as much since he started pivoting to just reviewing good movies, not doing hilariocities, and his affect just being... so.... ? Bland now? I know he's really busy outside of TH-cam, his new movie and all that. But some of these shifts were happening before that movie. I understand being mellower as you age, but there is almost no energy at all to his reviews, and that's been a thing for quite a while longer than his production of Shelby Oaks. Jeremy Jahns is a good example of how, yes, we can get a bit mellower, but he still has that energy and charisma, it's just not as in-your-face. Chris Stuckmann, though, it feels like he's doing the TH-cam movie reviews just as a necessity for his income rather than his passion for movies. I haven't felt that passion in a long time. I'm 100% sure he still loves film, but it doesn't come through in his reviews anymore.
I wouldn't call Jeremy a "movie buff" since he only watches/reviews a narrow spectrum of films. This is the guy who wouldn't watch and review Parasite until after it won best picture.
100% agree with you Dan on your thoughts about GoT3 and the conversation surrounding it. This next week for it is key. This film more or less, can't be included into the overall conversation about the state of the MCU as a whole because Gunn is leaving the studio, and this is his final story with the Guardians. If the film does "well," good for Marvel and Gunn, but he's unfortunately not coming back to help them keep that good streak going. If the film "flops," then oh well, Gunn isn't coming back to "hurt" Marvel anymore. The only thing you can really compare this film to is Gunn's previous GoT films, and to a lesser extent, the 3rd installment of Marvel films. There's no clear flag that you can plant, especially after opening weekend, whether or not this film is a flop or hit. Situations like this are always complex and need to be taken one week at a time. Thanks for bringing a calm, level headed, and logical approach to this conversation, Dan.
I’ve missed some charts lately, so I apologize if you’ve addressed this. Have you thought about showing cumulative to date box office numbers in the road to recovery. Would show a different perspective on how the whole box office for the year is recovering (or not) which may be less affected by week to week new releases. Think there’s something to learn from both graphs
Thank you for talking about the Kentucky Theater I went there a couple of times and LOVED IT! Knights of the Zodiac is based on Saint Seiya, a Manga that was done into an Anime in the 80’s - both are AWESOME! If you don’t like the movie, please give the anime a chance ✌🏻
Kentucky Theater featured! Yeah, dude! I live in Lexington, KY. It was surreal to hear Dan talk about my town, lol. I've had a lot of friends work there. Been a few times to watch Rocky Horror Picture Show, they used to play it every year. Don't know if they still do.
Congrats on the engagement! (forgot to comment it last week) When I saw the chart of mcu openings i thought that gotg 3 seems like it's just there. Like 'yeah of course marvel released another movie and it was of 'marval quality'. The only way I see this could be bad for marvel is that they were normally "event movies" like a new marvel movie comes out and it's like, an event. The last ones I felt that with was Endgame and Infinity War. It's probably because marvel have been dropping so much new content in the last few years that it's not special anymore. It's not an 'event' anymore, idk. The mcu seems to be doing just fine. (but "the mcu is doing fine" doesn't get love from the almighty algorithm.)
Hey! I'm curious Dan if there is any way to do the road to recovery chart adjusted for inflation, wouldn't that be a much more accurate indicator of how well the box office is actually doing compared to previous years.
Could you cover the Music Box theater in Chicago? It's just a really cool indie theater I like to visit. Gene siskel theater is also a neat one if you're looking for a smaller theater.
About The Knights of the Zodiac, it's a very famous manga and anime from the 80s, that had a huge success in South America and in France (where I saw it as a kid, one of my favorite anime at the time) and it's been decades that a feature film is in talk. Apparently someone took the challenge this time and made it. The trailer doesn't look bad at all, you should watch it. I'm actually curious about it. Names like Sean Bean, Famke Jansen and Marc Dacascos attached to it so maybe they did it right.
I think there's a little bit of MCU apathy, , the days of automatic big Marvel openings might be done. That being said, GoTG 3 held super well on Monday. Word of mouth is very strong and the film's story at the box office isnt written yet.
It's funny, when Endgame wrapped up the infinity saga there was much speculation about "who the next big bad will be" and what the next big arc will be, and how maybe people will react badly if there's just some new equivalent of the infinity stones and it's the same kind of thing again. Turns out they *didn't* do the same thing again, it's still far from clear how many of the movies and shows intersect, and yet the trend is of people generally responding less favourably to it anyway. Maybe the smart money would've been on doing the more obvious repeat of the infinity saga's pattern!
To be fair, we did have a global pandemic and we also ended the stories for a bunch of fan favorites. If they want big openings again, they're going to have to work for it. People don't consume movies the same way they did pre covid, and even if they did the lineup being at least half new faces was going to hurt them
I have read that one thing that could have pushed up Guardians 2's box office was that it was part of the build-up for 'Infinity War'. Though I think Guardians still has a solid fan base, I count them as my favorite MCU films, they were a bit more of an outlier like Ant-Man. Actually, after Dan's review I was expecting it to be darker than it was. I thoroughly enjoyed it, my only gripe was that the soundtrack wasn't better woven into the film, and I only say that because I hold James Gunn to a very high standard for that sort of thing.
This maybe anecdotal but we went to a Monday night showing of guardians and it was a pretty full theater and word of mouth has been pretty solid so maybe it does a little better than expected? Also it was our second time watching it and have to say it was better tye 2nd time.
Hi Dan, i was thinking of a new metric... To know if a movie is a relative success or not... Or how big of a success it is, you could see, from the weekly top 10, how much percentage each movie earned. It would help to check if maybe the movie had a big drop in earnings but maybe it was a lower earnings week all across the board... I dont think all weeks have the same amount spent by people and it would help to put it into perspective... What do you think?
Dan, how do monthly subscriptions to movie theaters impact box office. For example if I pay $20/month for a free movie a day and I go see GotG3 2 times in that week. How does that get distributed?
Dan - what in-depth analysis! Super impressive. Very happy about the support to independent theatres too :) If you want to, you can open a weekly subscription with the viewers at a small cost (say $2.50) with proceeds going to theatres of the week.
... Did Shang Chi have a 4x multiplier? I just checked and it opened to $75.3 million, total domestic $224.5 million. By my math, that is a 2.977 multiplier.
so I went to see Iron Man with some friends (I was a senior in high school) when it first came out and loved it. Then I went with my parents to a drive-in and saw it with Made of Honor. I’ll say this about Made of Honor, that was one of the best naps I’ve ever had! 😂
I live in Lexington and can attest that the Kentucky Theatre is an absolute gem. The theatre goes above and beyond and you won’t find better staff or management anywhere.
When it says per-theater average, does that mean per screen, or is it per total theater, so one showing it on 10 screens would count the same as one showing it on just one screen? Also, for the road to recovery, I'd love to see a second simple chart of just "Year to Date Total" or something like that where it shows what the total box office for the year is and compares it to what it was at that point in previous years. Thanks!
It means the physical theater building - so a theater could be one screen or five screens. A multiplex and a single-screen theater both count as one theater.
I feel like I don't remember that "donating 10% of the ad revenue to the independent theater of the week" thing! I think I remember the first time you did a theater shoutout, it was a couple months ago, right? It looked like a chapel? Have you added that 10% revenue donation thing since then? Or was it there already? Either way, a really awesome gesture! The only independent theater near me closed down because their owner passed away. I thought it was just a couple weeks out of respect for his memory, but no... it seems like it's permanently closed. It's been months now. January 29th is when they shut down officially, I believe.
That Forgetting Sarah Marshall poster looks like Kristen Bell wasn't available the day they took the picture so they had Photoshop her in. So it looks like her, but not quite.
On the Knights of the Zodiac thing, it's based on an anime that is called the same thing in english but is called Saint Seiya in japan and some other markets so it's another live action anime adaptation so it'll be interesting to see how it does.
As Far as Guardians 3. I think the projection was $110 to 120 Million and it did $118+ pretty much spot on. Verified Audience rating of 95%, CinemaScore was A, and Critic rating of 82%. I don't think we'll see the big drop off, like Antman 3, in its second week. The worldwide box office was $289 mil. Who thought it was going to be a top10? It is pretty clear it will make money, that is what really counts.
Knights of the Zodiac is a live action adaptation of "Saint Seiya". I think it was released in English in the US as "Knights of the Zodiac". The more you know. (Now whether or not it is or will be a good adaptation of the much beloved series, who knows.)
Dan’s rants about older movie titles and posters are always gold
It warms my heart knowing some of the ad revenue from these videos is going to the independent theaters that are featured in them. Thank you Dan!

Knights of the Zodiac is based on Saint Seiya, a Manga that was done into an Anime in the 80’s - both are AWESOME! If you don’t like the movie, please give the anime a chance ✌🏻
Never change, Dan. Your rant about Made of Honor is the little injection of personality that makes your videos so fun to watch.
(forgot to comment it last week)
When I saw the chart of mcu openings i thought that gotg 3 seems like it's just there.
Knights of the Zodiac is a live action adaptation of the Saint Seya anime, which is translated as Knights of the Zodiac in some languages
omg i live 5 minutes from the kentucky theater! been looking for an excuse to go since i moved to lexington
It was bad
People don't consume movies the same way they did pre covid, and even if they did the lineup being at least half new faces was going to hurt them
@@arthand7672 super mario movie just made a billion
@@audaciousjones there were multiple billion dollar grossing movies a year before the pandemic hit. Now we are lucky to get one a year.
@@arthand7672 avatar 2, top gun maverick and jurassic world 3 made over a billion last year
Yes! I saw the Mat Pat shout out! I hoped you saw it also!
I used to go to the Kentucky when i lived in Lexington :), miss it so much!!!!
Dan, Chris & Jeremy…the holy trinity 🙌
Hey dan. How well do you think the meg 2 will do since i dont think it was in your summer movie predictions
You, Jeremy and Chris are the goats of movie TH-cam
Dan when are you going to do more all my collections and do you buy any new physical media collections?
Dan, how do monthly subscriptions to movie theaters impact box office. For example if I pay $20/month for a free movie a day and I go see GotG3 2 times in that week. How does that get distributed?
It goes to Guardians the same as any other ticket sale. The theaters take on the economics of subscription services, not the studios.
Hi Dan. How specifically are you adjusting for inflation?
Dan - what in-depth analysis! Super impressive.
Very happy about the support to independent theatres too :) If you want to, you can open a weekly subscription with the viewers at a small cost (say $2.50) with proceeds going to theatres of the week.
Can we get an update on the 365 day chart?
Did the 365 chart get retired? I'm curious how Mario is sitting. I always liked that chart.
... Did Shang Chi have a 4x multiplier? I just checked and it opened to $75.3 million, total domestic $224.5 million. By my math, that is a 2.977 multiplier.
The highest for MCU is 4.22x, but that was for Far From Home, which can similarly be thrown out because that opened on a Tuesday.
Went to UK and saw many a movie and concert at the Kentucky - Taxi Driver, Grease, Rocky Horror, It Might Get Loud. Great shout out!
so I went to see Iron Man with some friends (I was a senior in high school) when it first came out and loved it. Then I went with my parents to a drive-in and saw it with Made of Honor. I’ll say this about Made of Honor, that was one of the best naps I’ve ever had! 😂
Can you shed any light on how much _honour_ Dempsey was actually made of, preferably as a percentage, or was the nap just way too powerful?
@@DanMurrellMovies thanks! Now I kinda wish they gave info for per-screen average too. There is no data too niche for a numbers nerd.
Hi, Paddington! I see you back there.
After watching MEG2 trailer, Dan needs a redo on his summer top 10
So hyped for this!
I thought the exact same thing 😂
Hey Dan. Is the 365 day hall of fame chart retired? I don't remember the last time you showed it.
Love the show as always! I know you've been watching more anime & I'm curious if there will be anymore anime reviews in the future?
Very fair analysis. Thanks.
I miss the segment remembering deceased people. It's fine if it is no longer in Charts, but hopefully it returns in one of the other video series.
I cannot possibly imagine watching Tetsuo the iron man on the big screen. I think my brain would explode.
The Made of Honor rant was a nice surprise 😅
I’m glad I’m not the only one who puts Dan up there with Jahns and Stuckmann for reviews.
Guardians should have a pretty good hold in coming weeks, despite its lower opening.
What lower opening??? It had top two biggest openings of the year? 🤔
@@djdubc09271 Lower than past Marvel around this time of year (Thor 4 opened higher).
Depends on people’s enthusiasm for Fast X on the 19th, and whether it takes a massive chunk out of its audience.
@@J_Tevo > a massive chunk
That massive chunk's name? Vinbert Dieselstein.
Love the Kentucky Theater! ❤
I did the Leo DiCaprio point meme when Film Theory did that shout-out. Very satisfying.
Would the "Road to Recovery" look different adjusted for inflation?
Blackberry was great! I actually enjoyed it more than Tetris and Air, but I'm a big fan of Matt Johnson. Definitely check it out if you can!
Does anyone know if the streaming charts show is on a different platform, or has it not started yet? Or is it gonna be only once a month or something?
Finally someone who actually does the numbers instead of thinking what they are & making grotesque thumbnails for rage bait clicks because wOKe
I say hold judgment until the second weekend.
Quantamania had the biggest opening weekend for an Ant-Man movie, then completely nosedived after that.
Very happy to see MatPat with the shoutout Dan I wish you nothing but success
Well Hello MatPat! Glad to know you also have good taste in film analysts 🤙🏻
We are gonna need a deep dive review of the movie Made Of Honor please and thank you!
evil dead rise been killing it. look forward to more from that francise. rise was sooo good.
Knights of the Zodiac is a live action adaptation of "Saint Seiya". I think it was released in English in the US as "Knights of the Zodiac". The more you know. (Now whether or not it is or will be a good adaptation of the much beloved series, who knows.)
I expect that GotG V3 will have a reasonably good hold. It's a stronger movie overall than Quantummania, and has pretty good word of mouth.
