I can’t thank you and your eXo team enough for your passion and immense work that has gone into this and your other projects. This is without a doubt the greatest and most important video game preservation project ever undertaken. Please know we are grateful for all of your work. Best of luck on the upcoming launch!!
eXo : "I'll be succint" Me : 🙁 eXo goes on a 20 minute ramble about preservation ethics full of colored metaphors, digressions and a couple of deep silences Me : 🥳🔥🎉 I love the vids man, having a discourse to go with the project makes it even more fun IMO. This will be my day 1 download of the year
Star Wars trilogy is the perfect example for your movie analogy :) There are MULTIPLE fan projects for restoring the original movie which is no longer commercially available.
It felt like a million Christmases when I stumbled upon eXoDOS after having setup a handful of DOSbox games in Launchbox. While those tools are great, what y'all have done with it shows a dedication and attention to detail that is hard to find!
Your work will go down in the annals of legend years from now there will be a pc in some museum running this program for kids in that time to see what we grew up with
I feel tired just from the thinking on how much struggle and patience preparing all of this have required. And then you just release it like that - for everyone, not for close "elitist" community. Amazing work and total respect.
Hey, thanks for a trip down the 640KB lane! My roots were exactly this: '80s/90s DOS games, mainly some racing, platform, shooters. I've got fond memories of C&C Red Alert, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom 1&2, Heretic, Crusader: No Remorse / No Regret, Prince of Persia, SimCity, Sokoban, Supaplex, Test Drive, Stunts, Commander Keen, Secret Agent, Duke Nukum and DN3D... I didn't know squat about computers back then, being a wee kid, but I could move around the directory structure, which gave me a head start and some bragging rights when we learned IT at school. Over time I went deeper and deeper, tinkering with BIOS, software/OS configuration, networking, some programming, GNU/Linux and open source software... I've always been around computers. Also, since I'm Polish, gaming made me dive into dictionaries and learn English to get a grip of what was going on - especially in the late '90s when I got into cRPGs (Fallout, Arcanum etc.). "Preservation through playability" sounds like "peace through power", haha! But it absolutely makes sense. Having worked at a "living" museum of printing and typography, I'm totally with you - tech you can't use or don't know how to use is not really preserved. It's not just about keeping the artifact, but also the knowledge around it, e.g. how to operate an old machine. BTW I could rant for hours about abandonware vs copyright. If I had my way, any entertainment software that is no longer actively supported by the vendor should be considered public domain, period.
Another version of this incredible program! I cannot, as well as others thank you and your team for this incredible effort. I just went with Exo 6 lite.
I grew up on DOS, I have many of the same feelings as you about this platform. I love it and this project is amazing. It keeps growing and matures year after year. Your passion shows in your work and in these videos.
This is such a cool idea! DOS was the first PC system I played games on. I have memories of playing certain games but never knew what they were called. Hopefully I come across them as I play the collection. I had a lot of fun as a kid playing these games and learning how to get them running when everyone else couldn't as it was a sense of euphoria when your 6-8 years old.
Also we in Germany love your work ! Please keep on ! Remembering all the games we bought 30 years ago which became useless with newer hardware and operating systems. The games industries can‘t vote against this, because many of the games we HAVE bought years ago, and many of the old publishers and companies don’t exist any more nowadays …
This is awesome. I just found v5 and am checking it out now. Thank you and everyone else on the team for this incredibly massive effort. I can't imagine how many hours went into this. It really shows!
This is the best description of preservation I have ever heard. Tge team are the best. Thanks for all the iterations of eXoDOS you have done. I am looking forward to the new one. The videos you have done explain your passion and they look great.
This is a fantastic project! Finally i found some time to check this and it's really so well done, so amazing. Thanks for this and all the people involved, for your effort, and your work! Thanks!
Never heard of this project but will be checking it after video popped up in my feed. Curious to checkout some DOS games from my younger days for nostalgia.
Hi eXo. I am one of the new people to your eXoDOS. I love this, I downloaded V6 and it is fantastic. Brings back so many memories and takes away all the hassle of getting the games working. I love it. As well as this, all the magazines and book will be getting read as well.
Hi, You are amazing ! The work done is huge , and I can feel the passion across your video . I agree with your goals especially on DOS games because of the incredible variety of hardware and configurations over the 2 decades of PC evolution (Dos ; win9x) . I'm downloading the full version actually, and I will let a small minipc online with the files to share . I will also use it on Linux because for me Windows is the past . So thank You for your work, thank You for the fun .
Thank you so much for your dedication, and collaborative hard efforts to preserve this part of gaming history that doesn't often get in the spotlight! I'm hoping to be able to revisit many fond MS-DOS memories I had growing up in awe of this amazing gaming-capable platform, as well as share both old and new ones with my nephew. You guys are AWESOME! 💖
I wish I still had a 386 (the first PC I played with/on) or even a 486. Just DOS, Windows 3.11 and having to mess with autoexec.bat and config.sys for every _th game just to get it to load :D Man, gaming back in the day was so much more satisfying /ahhhthegoodolddays
I have so many questions I don't even know where to begin. I'll go the discord route. Mostly questions to do with space requirements and the differences between regular and lite versions and also when the boxes are planned. But thank you for this! I wish I had discovered this before I discovered Phil's channel. It would have saved me many thousands of dollars on hard to find hardware and many months of build time. 🙂 One thing I would ask here is do you anticipate the games, and thus the emulators they use to support USB joy sticks for things like Wing Commander or is that not possible?
Do you have a list of games that you're looking for, that you have and are waiting to be added, games that you can't include due to aggressive copyright holders, that sort of thing?I have several storage tubs full of old PC games that I have bought since the '80s, and I wouldn't mind supporting this project that way. I don't "do" Discord, so a website link would be great!
A guy from RW, so happy to see a face behind the legend. I hope nothing but the best for you and the team. When will v6 be released? Is there a change log we can peruse?
exowin9x requires a portable emulation solution that meets several criteria that does not exist currently. We have been collecting the files for when the time comes that the proper emulation solution presents itself.
Hi eXo, thanks for everything you do - this is looking like a great update. What does the upgrade process look like for v5 users? Really hoping I don't have to download 600GB again!
In notice in version 5 in the Launchbox drop down menu there is an exodos updater. Will this updated pull in version 6 or will there be another process for updating versions?
While I disagree with some of the decisions of the project (if the goal is preservation, not being locked to a Windows-only platform like Launchbox would help immensely with that), I appreciate all the hard work in gathering and configuring all these games to be easily playable on modern machines
we have to choose a front end to work with. Nothing is "locked" to launchbox. You can use any front end to access the launch files. That said, it would be impossible to take all of our metadata and make it work with every front end out there. They all use different data stores. As far as non windows launchers gom we have a custom linux one on our discord for folks who prefer to use linux. I would suggest doing a bit more research before accusing our project of being "locked" to launchbox.
A question: Since different games require different kinds of performance to be emulated at the correct speed, how is it made sure that a laptop from 2015 runs every game at correct speed and just the same as a 3000 dollar PC from 2023? Or is this fixed inside dosbox itself somehow?
Within dosbox you set a specific number of cycles for the emulated machine to run at. As long as the number of cycles specific isn't above the rate the machine is capable, then you are usually fine. The only other scenario that is problematic is when a game is set to "max" cycles, and the host machine is so powerful that the game doesn't run properly due to *too much* power. In the case of eXoDOS, each game's proper number of cycles are already set.
Hey all. Does anyone have the torrent file for the full version, media pack etc? I have been trying to get to the homepage of exodos for over a week now, and I just get a "Can't reach this page" error. Thanks heaps.

I really hope there will be a physical release again. This time i'm in.

it's only 10 minutes if you 2x :D :D
that *WAS* succinct for that rant.... lol
The time and effort that has gone in this project is mind blowing. The load and play simpleness of it all is pure genius and amazing work.

You are really preaching to the choir brother!!!!
Yoour work is great, im terrible with dos ox this is a godsend to play some fantastic old games, I enjoyed as a kid.
Simply amazing! I love version 5 and can't wait for version 6. Lots of hard work I'm sure and it shows. Thanks!
This project is ❤❤❤. Thanks so much for the time and work you put in it.
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks for the continued work that goes into this great project! :)
Our pleasure!
Love the passion and memories,
This can't come out soon enough, especially excited about the new shaders.
Love those photos you add for those videos 😂..
Great job in collecting games. I'm thinking of buying a physical copy to see if that helps out as well.
I appreciate your support

I've been asked to deep dive some of the more esoteric/odd games in eXoDOS. I think that series is a good candidate
While I disagree with some of the decisions of the project (if the goal is preservation, not being locked to a Windows-only platform like Launchbox would help immensely with that), I appreciate all the hard work in gathering and configuring all these games to be easily playable on modern machines

@@RetroeXoI and I would suggest advertising that you have a Linux option more visibly!

I can not believe I did not know about eXoDOS before now! Well done! Will be donating to assist your efforts 👍👍👍
Any thoughts on where to get v6 when you and the team release it?
my website
www.retro-exo.com
Have any games been removed on v6? I'll upgrade unless something has been removed, I hope that isn't the case :)
nothing removed. just a few things renamed
Can this be installed on an external drive and run on other computers without having to install anything on every computer?
yep. it is 100% portable
🥰
Hey all. Does anyone have the torrent file for the full version, media pack etc? I have been trying to get to the homepage of exodos for over a week now, and I just get a "Can't reach this page" error. Thanks heaps.
I managed to get to it. I vpn'd into Japan and was able to get to the site. I wonder if any other Australian users have the same issue.
Any possibility that the box art can have a standard shape/aspect ratio? It would make Launchbox look a lot cleaner?
different boxes came in different sizes. It is not for me to modify the box art to a shape that it wasn't released in just to make it look pretty
