    the most annoying thing in this game is when bosses do a combo, leave an opening after the combo for you to attack, and then the next time they do that that same combo they immediately pull a slash too quick to react to, basically turning finding openings into a complete dice roll

      @@StarmenRock You dont have to make excuses for every facet of the game, it's an unnecessarily frustrating addition to quite a few of the bosses that makes more than a few of the players deaths seem cheap rather then earned. Smugness like this isn't going to impress anyone.

      which bosses do that?

    • @spouwnerring
      @spouwnerring 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      That's why I prefer Sekiro combat. Attacks you have to dodge are few and far between and the attacks you can block and parry do damage to the enemy's posture bar, which - when filled - gives you the oportunity to preform a death-blow, thus resulting in the boss fight/enemy encounter ending much faster.

    Evergoal is just pronounced ever jail. In old English, jail is goal and fromsoftware uses it in Bloodborne also. It's why those enemies are trapped within the evergoals

    42:00 Hi, I'm the guy who liked the Graves more than any catacombs so far. I liked that the difficulty came from something other than just avoiding attack damage, and I enjoyed the one-off mechanics they introduced, whether or not they were balanced.

  • @Bibi_effin_Blocksberg

    I think what stood out to me was when you said "it could've ended at the Erdtree" when you get there the first time.
    That's pretty much what I'd say too. That would've been a good ending and the game would've felt complete enough - maybe have a legacy dungeon in the tree or something. However, everything you need to do to enter it felt kinda sorta a little too much - it's already been 100hours for me at this point I think, and I was looking forward to the big finale.
    The game is amazing, but by the end (especially if you explore everything) it started to drag out a tad too long. However, that's complaining on the highest level. And of course there are minor other problems - balancing throughout the game can feel odd, getting (the right) upgrade materials can be a hassle and some minor other things like the camera at times. Still, overall, this whole experience was one of the most memorable in my over 20+ years of playing videogames.
    Now, what do we learn from all of this?
    Easy. We need Dragons Dogma 2.

    • @ehrtdaz7186
      @ehrtdaz7186 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i think people overexaggerate the drop in quality after leyndell, sure it's worse, but it's not even near the drop quality in lost izalith (or ds2 as a whole lol), besides, the rest of the game is really short anyway, i mean aside from optional stuff like haligtree, you just ride to the fire giant, kill him, go through the farum azula and that's it, you can do it in a few hours. And it's not like the endgame doesn't have good moments - the whole haligtree is really well designed, farum azula is cool too, malenia is an amazing boss imo, dragonlord, godfrey and radagon are all great bosses too, dragonlord being the best dragon fight in the series imo

    • @Bibi_effin_Blocksberg
      @Bibi_effin_Blocksberg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@ehrtdaz7186 I don't really see a big drop in quality, for me it was just more like "yeah, uh, gimme my big payoff please?" and then it was like "no, u gotta ride up there and do other stuff before that." and then at the end the Erdtree was just a Bossfight - I kinda sorta hoped for some more buildup there, with a dungeon inside the tree or something. Something was just missing for me there, can't 100% point the finger on it, it just felt "dragged out with a not too built up finale".
      Also, as I've mentioned, if you play the game with an Explorer-Mindset, you probably have clocked in well over 100 hours for the first playthrough, so maybe some fatigue has settled in by then? I don't know.
      In other word: Everything you said isn't really my problem with the last quarter of the game. :)

    • @ehrtdaz7186
      @ehrtdaz7186 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Bibi_effin_Blocksberg oh i understand, i personally expected that there will be more after morgott and leyndell, so it's maybe the case of the right mindset. But i have to admit that the pacing at the end was off, because at the end of farum azula you suddenly fight dragonlord, maliketh, gideon, godfrey, radagon and elden beast in a row with basically no breaks, it kinda became a boss rush right at the end

    I personally thought that the areas past Leyndell were some of the best From areas I've ever seen.
    Mt Top of the Giants and Consecrated Snowfield were like the best yet versions of the Painted World and the DLC from DS3 and DS2.
    The Haligtree area was by far one of my favorite places just for how tough all the enemies are there, and Farum Azula is competing with my favorite ever Souls levels.
    When I got into and then through Leyndell, I had this horrible feeling of dread, that I was nearing the end of my first playthrough.
    I was DEEPLY happy and satisfied when I realized how much game I still had ahead of me.

    Elden Ring earned its overwhelmingly positive reception and critical acclaim, it's a brilliant game, however I'm glad to see that more and more reviews are pointing out the flaws it does have, notably the balancing issues when it comes to late-game areas and bosses. I really hope From Soft takes note of these criticisms because this is something that can be fixed very quickly and easily. Hopefully, they'll keep all that in mind when creating any potential DLC for the game, and I really hope they end up delivering bossfights on the same quality as all-time favorites like Gael, Isshin, Orphan of Kos, Artorias..etc

      It's not going to happen and they already have shown that.
      They nerfed an OPTIONAL boss because... Well he's over fucking tuned, and the player base revolted because either:
      1). Well you're just RUINING the experience for new players!
      Or
      2). Well I HAD to do it when it was OP so why doesnt everyone else??!!!?!?!!
      And because of that: the nerfs got reverted.
      FromSoft fanbase is a bunch of 30 year old men that cry if you use a certain weapon, build, or god forbid don't emote at them in PvP.
      Don't expect any logical changes to the game. It breaks their mental.

    • @flamingmanure
      @flamingmanure 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      they actually patched alot of the issues out in the first month. theres still some balance shenanigans at end game but its better now especially with the increased animation speeds, poise damage and normal damage on most weapons. what ppl dont understand is this is the first game fromsoft does with such a staggering amount of XP you can potentially get before reaching end game. theyll never lower end game damage that much becuz for ppl that explored everything before getting there, the entire place would be an utter joke. i know ppl that got to mountain tops with level 220 characters, thats just how much runes you can get before mountain tops, it isnt just a bad balance issue, its also a mathematical one thats almost impossible to balance correctly all the way through.

    This review was right on the money about this game and Shadow of the c
    Colossus. That's more accurate in my opinion than Dark Souls and Breath of the Wild.
    I think it's a fantastic first attempt at an open world. And I think there is more enourmous potential both in this game with some patches and dlc.
    Yeah lots if the reskins like the dragons, godrick, astel, caelid dogs, trees, suck.
    But some stuff such as Dragonkin Soldier, Beastmen of Faram Azula, Loretta, Mohg, Godfrey, Niall and O'Niall, Margit and Morgott break a trend that From Software has had with reskins in that they're movesets or mechanics change. That one is slowly getting tuned out.
    But I noticed why the Dark Souls servers weren't back online, it was because of trying to finish Elden Ring. From Software hasn't had trouble with being good or creative, it's going way too far at points and not having some restraint. ER's second half has trouble in that regard.
    Another thing about Souls games is that they aren't always going to be convenient. Their worlds will have counters to bosses, but you might it in some other location.

  • @gentlemangamerec7025

    I think for me, the games biggest flaw is trying to tell you where to go. I have sunken a good 150 hours in wanting to try and get most things done. And I'm not sure if I had a really bad sense of direction or it's something else, but when trying to find the "Albanian woman", I spent an hour trying to find a cabin, and it ended up being a cave that lead to a cabin. Like... I know there were secrets in the previous dark souls games that were stupid, but I think trying to find a needle in a haystack in some of these areas is not conveyed enough. But once again, I think it's me trying to explore as much as I can.

  • @highwind1991
    @highwind1991 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A game like Elden ring is just too big to not have flaws. Especially big flaws that would destroy entire other games. The Witcher 3, Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2 have these as well. But those games and Elden ring I still would put in my top 20 favorite games of all time simply because of the ambition and the fact that these studios were actually able to match it for the most part which is more than I can say for most games that are usually released. They're messy masterpieces, but undoubtedly one of a kind achievements. I would say that all 4 of from softwares masterpieces aren't perfect but who cares, they're outstanding titles. Only reason I doubled down on that statement is because I think people tend to forget that you can both love something dearly while also being critical of it

    at 5:39 you mention ubisoft clutter and its funny because breakpoint has one of the most interesting systems for open world questing where you can disregard almost all UI and even the map does not give you objective markers instead opting to tell you cardinal directions and locations in reference to landmarks. I cannot for the life of me find a game that does something similar.

  • @enman009

    What a great review! Was easy to understand and well laid out.
    I think the repetition is what hurts this game the most. At least more unique enemies and less reuse would have come a long way.
    I don't agree on AOE, delayed attacks or damage being 100%. Vigor and talismans comes a long long way, so people being punished for not building their character is valid. Same as the attacks: this is not DS3 and positioning and jumping attacks will help you avoid most if not all of this attacks.
    Let's hope the dlc up the game bosses as great or better than Godfrey, Malekith and Radagon. Thanks for the review.

    Malenia is undoubtedly my favourite boss in this game and among my top 5 FromSoftware bosses of all time (and perhaps one of my favourite video game bosses ever, and I’ve beaten a lot games with a lot of great bosses), but I’m glad someone shares my sentiment in some of the bosses pros and cons, the only thing I suggest with the waterfowl dance is to equip a weapon with the Bloodhound step ash of war, when Malenia jumps in the air switch to that weapon and spam the skill button until the attack has ended, you will avoid most if not all the damage from the attack.
    I do get sick of hearing people complain about that attack when there are items in the game to help avoid it, plus Malenia is easily staggered and highly susceptible to bleed so it’s not like she’s impossible.

      Elden Ring UI looks like it’s still in pre-alpha, you can’t walk around the world without dropping to 25fps on any platform, and you know, it’s amazing how you can’t double jump if you are equipping 75% of the weapons in the game.
      “Dunked on” is an overstatement. Elden Ring is a good bad game. And hey, you can like bad games, but it’s still… bad.

Even though I disagree with your opinion that it falls in the backend. Nah, I think somethings should just not have Sequels like Demon's Souls. It will always be compared to the first one. And the game won't live up to the first one because Bloodborne is so unique. Take the Dark Souls trilogy as a whole, most say one is the best because of how original it is. I think new ips are fine with From Software, they can pretty much make what they want now.
      Bloodborne should just have one entry.

Dark Souls 2 is really good, it's problem is that it has Dark Souls in it's name and a short ass development time. If it was done after Bloodborne. Great, but I think From Software kills it with new ips and can bend their formula in any way they want.

    I wasn't hyped for this game at all. Not that I thought it was gonna be bad. Just that the open world wasn't gonna do it any favors. Bloodborne is my favorite game of all time and Sekiro and DS3 are a couple of my favorites as well. And to be honest it took way too long for the game to hook me. I would only play for 30 minutes at a time and get bored. I started half a dozen new characters before deciding on Vagabond I think the class is. Played through Limgrave and still wasn't particularly impressed. Then I got to the Weeping Peninsula, specifically Morne Castle, and that caught my attention. It felt like a level. A short one but very cool. Once I got to Stormveil Castle I wasn't too interested in it. Unfortunately I happened to go every right direction in the level and it ended super quick for me. The turning point for me was absolutely The Academy of Raya Lucaria. That turn into the front entrance revealing a towering cathedral like structure with the glow of the windows in the fog and rain. That moment I was hooked. I wanted to explore everything about the place. The boss was a bit gimmicky but I still love the second phase with the huge moon and watery ground. After that i was playing hours at a time on my days off from work. Wildly enjoying my time. Now I would put this game in third place of my favorite Fromsoft games after Bloodborne and Sekiro. When I started a second playthrough I'm still unimpressed with Limgrave. I dunno what it is. It bores the shit out of me. Maybe it's me but I feel like the game doesn't make a good first impression. Good thing I stuck with it because I really like this game as a whole.

    Sometimes I feel a wave of absurdity wash over me when either myself or someone I know/TH-camr/etc who are able to play an amazing new release that are basically miracles of creation with a look of near-boredom. Maybe drop a couple complaints here and there because nothing is perfect so wouldn't be right not to point out a few issues. I'm guilty of this sorta thing too, but man, what the hell happened to the magic? I played Fallout 3 in a state of wonderous awe, but these days that feeling is difficult to attain although not entirely absent, thankfully. (Red Dead 2 and Control activated my joy almonds) I think we should just go back to the Atari or playing with sticks for a couple years, and then bring back these games so we can at least feel a slight change in pulse from that rush they can bring.
    Not sure why I chose here to say all this shit since Boulder is one who seems to have genuine appreciation for the medium and those working within it. Yeah, the downside of this TH-cam Essay/critique/retrospective, as much as I like that content and some creators, sometimes treats games as products rather than pieces of art with the hole being grander than it's parts. Criticism is important, even essential, but it becomes partial and inconsistent with some games, like Hollow Knight, being and untouchable masterpiece with no flaws, whereas Soulsborne, while imperfect, gets sometimes some strong criticism.
      I would say: enjoy what you play, regardless of it's weak elements, but always remember that there's always flaws with any piece of media

      My main complaint is the boss mechanics and how they can downright cheat at times. The way they can combo into another combo then another attack then a combo meanwhile you have to wait forever to hopefully get a single hit in. Rinse and repeat. The bosses have been made too fast, one-shotty and able to cancel their punish window and go straight into another combo. Past games had a nice back and forth balance to battles.

    ER isn't a masterpiece but it is a Classic that should be learned from. Like UI/UX should be limited/sacrificed/stylized for immersion's sake. Gameplay-wise I think ER is DS4 and that it doesn't evolve the gameplay as it does make it approachable, the fact that animation cancels and deflects from Sekiro wasn't carried over is a crime.
    If there is one thing I'd give ER a knock on ER is interactivity dialogue-wise, I'd like to talk with NPCs on various topics, it doesn't have to be exposition like with Giddon but I want to know what makes these guys tick, I'd like to ask Godfrey; "what's your motive here?" "How do you feel about your wife shagging herself?" (If you found out before you fought with him) "Your a national hero and first of my race, why are we fighting?"
    Edit: For the sequel, I think they should down-scale the size and increase the depth of interactivity; have side missions that link into each other and affect one another Fallout NV/Deus Ex style, maybe weather conditions that can change the landscape (BOTW as an example), have branching story events that change how you interact with future and past areas (FNV, Deus Ex, Baulders Gate, Skyrim to a lesser extent)

    The Ranni fixation the fans have will be this games greatest mystery. We all know the popular waifu characters and generally we can understand their appeal. Ranni has none. She's not fun or interesting. Not "pretty" in the way popular waifu are. She's a doll that becomes a ghost as outer gods can create flesh. God's (which she presumable becomes in her ending) cannot. Guess this is for the Bloodborne guys who liked the doll?
    Ranni is a non factor. Iji and Blaidd made that quest. Both very interesting and fun characters. Lovable too unlike Ranni. Ranni says she loves them but walked a path knowing that it'll indirectly cause their destruction. That is incredibly hypocritical and she can fuck off with that lie. Ranni can burn in the eternal flames where she belongs.

Like if a shooter has a lot of issues that have been addressed by other games it's a lot easier to criticize.
