AWESOME 👍🏼😎 AWESOME 😎👍🏼 SONG....BIG BIG HIT, ALWAYS WILL BE. I'M 54 YEARS YOUNG AND I STILL GET IN THE GROOVE EVERY TIME I HEAR THIS GREAT UNFORGETTABLE SONG!!!💜💜💜 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Yeah I’ve always thought it was kinda pathetic when people made fun of “one hit wonders”. They’re either jealous or ignorant but it is so rare to have a huge hit. To me it’s incredible when someone can pull it off at all.
I wrote a book 3o years ago Will use heart of it on another writing project One hit wonder would be best ! Be remembered for one book One song Then less confusion as to what you’re about
I lived in Scottsdale AZ in the 80's and as I remember someone had that number and had to lose it because of course the phone was ringing off the hook! haha
Thanks for sharing. Love me a classic story behind a classic song. Saw Tommy Tutone in late 90's at Bay Meadows horse racing venue before they closed it and they were great!
I booked Tommy Tutone into The Palms Cafe in San Francisco back in late 1980 where (I think) they played 'Jenny' for the first time in public. Got chills when I heard it. Great song. TT was an awesome live act, too. I fully expected them to carry on cranking out hits. Pity it didn't turn out that way.
@@profd65 ..or a thoughtful person who knows SOME PEOPLE *only* clicked on the video to hear the story behind the song and he's saving THEM time.. lol.. I absolutely clicked on his time stamp to jump to the story.. and for the record I'm not a busy important person 😉

In the day when someone guys got lucky with a girl but she wanted nothing more to do with him he wrote her name and number on the bathroom stall. Disrespecting her. " for a good time call" this was all over in the late 70's early 80's. I often wanted to call just because of the things that were written. This is what I believe inspired this song. Even if the song writer can't or won't acknowledge this virsion.
LOL 😆 I named my dog Jenny after this song. I even included 867-5309 on her tag. It's always been one of my favorites. I moved from Napa in 1967. All of the bands you mentioned I grew up listening to. 😮 Edit: if you think about it, it describes a dog😅😅😅
Jenny was my 'fake bar name' some 20-odd years ago. My last name was Turntue and I'll bet you cn guess what my phone number was. Surprisingly, I only got called out on it ONCE! That guy got my real name and a proper date. He, and he alone, passed the test!
I'm from Cali. and there was a rumor, I think it was even on local news, that someone in the gay area, oops, I mean Bay area that had that number and was trying to auction it off, but was stopped by the phone co. because they said " The number is not your property to sell" according to the rumor anyway.
If you dialed that # with the Chicago area code in “1983” (I think it was area code 312). You would hear a recording from the band, saying something to the affect of “Thank you, Jenny’s not here, but we love you all” blah blah blah. And now I’ve heard a lot of local law firms, have bought up that phone #.
I wrote a song around that time "Don't Worry Jennifer" and it is about the singer' having his girlfriend cutting off his long hair. He wants to be presentable because by the end, he surprises her by proposing. I played it for some friends, and they were telling me, you can't use that title because a band called Two Tone has a new song called Jenny Jenny 8675309? I was like, so what? LOL They were serious.
Well this was a pleasant "there ya have it, folks" kinda thing....was expecting some tale of a gal named "Jenny/Jennifer" who ditz some guy, who then wrote her Connecticut phone number, so she'd get a stream of calls from guy's out "for a good time" , 'til the poor girl would have had to get AT&T. or Verizon to change her number...
I heard it was about a talented young musician playing with you all...and you were jamming like u do....and you all asked him "hey who is your girl friend and whats her number" he replied jenny...but you couldnt use her real number...so you used an international phone code....
If my name was Jenny or Jennifer and I had this number I bet every once in awhile I’d get some one that’s drunk and calling and ask if Jenny is there and if I said yes someone would be singing the song.
not the way I envisioned it. I envisioned the guys in the band or who ever wrote the song came up with the lyrics while sitting on the crapper or taking a leak at a local bar after reading the messages scrawled all over bathroom stall or walls. funny song
In the original release, I still keep hearing some "Daddy I've got your number/don't change your number" again & again. Diction wasn't a big thing in the early 80's LoL
Such a fun song. But do women really find it sexist or disgusting? We all realize that no one puts a number up on a bathroom wall for ANY good reason - except hatred and revenge. But that is reality. This song is a lighthearted fantasy. I often like 'reply' songs, like Miley's perspective on Jolene. But I was disappointed in Jenny Pruitt's take on the song. Clever, but it also sounded too mean-spirited. But then, as a guy, is my 2 cents worth anything? It is like me the old guy commenting on rap - which isn't my music and isn't made for me!
I was checking out in Lowe’s one day. Paying cash. The girl at the register annoyingly asked my phone number. So I said 867-5309. She typed it in and I paid. When I got to my truck, a lady my age was giving me a big smile as she walked by 😂. Seems she knew the song too 😂
You cannot listen to this song and not smile and sing along. Love it forever!
Like “Ice Ice Baby”. When you have a hit that strong you milk it. “Jenny” is over 40 years old and just smokes. Masterpiece song. Great video.
A tremendous song, never get tired of hearing it !!! A forever classic !!! It shaped my life growing up !!!! Thank you Jenny !!!!!!!
This and centerfold by J. geils brings back high school memories.

Whenever people make jokes about it being a one hit wonder, just remember, it’s one more than the rest of us.
Yeah I think a lot of these songs come from songwriters that are based in Nashville.
Funny how he talked about Elvis Costello.
100% more!

I Found 867-5309 "Jenny " scratched into the top of a desk when I was in a community college class
If you dial that number with 204 area code, you actually hear the song.

True!
Alex IS one of the cool people!! Excellent songwriter. Clover was such a great band. I wish there was more of Clover's live stuff online.
Love you Al!
4:07 .. Huh? He had a steam powered 4 track studio? And then he ran out of steam? I had no idea such things existed. That's awesome.
I had a mice powered 4 track, same issue....
Wow! What a rich history Alex has. Well done, cobber.

Just great. just great......
Wow!! Great video.
The B-52's covered similar territory with "606-0842"...
I heard so many versions of the origin of this song. It's a revenge song, it's a frustrated love song, you name it. Nice to hear the inside skinny.
It's a great song to dance to!
Thank you for this video!! Answering the important questions!!!

Great interview Bart - and such a classically cool song !
The guy who wrote the song about a phone number is named Call?
TT were one hit wonders, but wow what a number!
Don't forget the song Steal Away.

Amazing how many hit songs were just "off the cuff" and appeared out of nowhere while just messing around.

A classic for the eighties kids
I work at a place where we ask for phone numbers so they can earn points, people tell me this number once or twice a day 🤣
One of the great songs. Great story.
At 5:30 your beautiful accent comes through when saying Dexy's Midnight Runners".
Tommy Tyrone said they wrote this after a girl gave him the number for the guitarist in the band. I hadn’t heard this version of who wrote it.
What a great guy
Fun! Thank you!
When this song was out my number was 539-5309, a common prefix in my city, I would get prank calls asking for Jenny a lot.
that was my number
Wow that’s so awesome with Huey Lewis
I'm from Cali. and there was a rumor, I think it was even on local news, that someone in the gay area, oops, I mean Bay area that had that number and was trying to auction it off, but was stopped by the phone co. because they said " The number is not your property to sell" according to the rumor anyway.
Of course today you might need ten digits. I do live in an 867 prefix, and never called asking for Jenny.
Alex-Thank You--great work.
Hahaha love that smile at the end
Thank-you! I used to have a phone number that was not too far off of that in college in San Luis Obispo. No I didn't put it on a bathroom wall.
Hey, that wasn't right! "867-5309" was way, WAY better than Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come on Eileen," which I never liked at all!
what is he playing at the end, any guitar heads who can hel figure it out for me? surely somethings tuned differently there?
What a song!
Only heard that song today when I saw it was one of Bill Murray's jams.I would have been 3 when it came out lol.

A guy where I live is selling items on his website for $8,675,309 I wonder how many people will catch this ?
Halfway through this video and I was like when are they going to talk about what is written in the title of the video?!
I'm mad you never gave us the area code!
Wow!
I remember a joke where both 8675309 and Jessie's Girl were mentioned
2:47 I when they start discussing we came to hear. You're welcome
The prefix is a Gulfport Mississippi number.
When catfish ask for my phone number I give them this. They don't understand the joke and ask for the area code as well.
My wife put this number on the back of a jacket and wore it.
Is her name Jenny?
How many remember our actual phone number sung to the tune!!!
I heard it was about a talented young musician playing with you all...and you were jamming like u do....and you all asked him "hey who is your girl friend and whats her number" he replied jenny...but you couldnt use her real number...so you used an international phone code....
But, did they pick a prime number as the phone number on purpose or was that some sort of devine luck ?
Funny thing is, when I first heard the song in the early 80’s I thought it was Elvis Costello.
interesting how they don't put anything in the description like people's names LOL
Jake Taylor's Wife used "Cuyahoga Sheet Metal" as brushoff.

My First girlfriend, Jenni.
As good as this song is, in my opinion the best song TT did was "Steal Away ". Check it out.
Good thing Tommy Tutone grabbed that song from you
Also, in Perú it has a very high price if you want to have that combinations of numbers, mostly for escorts services.
