Yeah the, "It must not be named." seems kind of silly today, but back then, a lot of cultures were so superstitious that they believe that if you gave something a name, you were giving it more power because you recognized it/ acknowledged it. I know it sounds a bit strange, but it was a long time ago.
My mom was OBSESSED with this movie when it came out. She got the soundtrack and saw it in theaters at least 8 times. Then she took up midevil sword fighting. But because she was 5 ft 2in she wasn't taken too seriously. So she learned to fight with 2 swords at once.
I might be Christian, but can't deny that the Viking prayer is badass. Fun Fact: The reason people give this movie a lot of grief, is that this is an Adaptation In Name Only and the book by Michael Crichton is claimed by many it is better every way. They also hate how the history depicted in the novel has been changed in the movie. However we'll soon learn that's a silly argument. In the end, you'll enjoy the movie better if you have never read the book. Fraus Dolus Fact: "Eaters Of The Dead" by Michael Crichton, has become part of one of the most notorious hoaxes in Librarianship Circles. The Ahmad Tusi Manuscript, which the bibliography says is the novel's source, is completely made up. The name of the translator, Fraus Dolus, is 'hoax' and 'fraud' in Latin. Since the novel was published in 1976, the University of Oslo, where this manuscript is supposed to be kept, has sent out letters telling enquirers that they have been the victim of a hoax. Historical Fact: The historic Ahmed Ibn Fadlan traveled as an emissary to the land of the Volga Bulgars to convert them to Islam. On his way he encountered Turks in Central Asia and Russian and Varangians (Volga Vikings). He returned in 923 AD, and no record after this date refers to him.
The book is called "Eaters of the Dead" . The movie leaves out so much and doesn't explain several things, some crucial to the story. First, the whole story is a loose retelling of Beowulf that also draws upon a manuscript of an actual Arab interpreter with the name of Antonio Banderas' character who really did interact with the Vikings in the region and time period depicted in the movie. Another thing that's not 100% clear is the length of the journey. They had to travel all the way from the Black Sea area (Ukraine or Turkey), though the mountains to the Volga River , and then up the river to what is now Russia. Then, they they had to travel via land to the Baltic Sea, where they took a ship to what is now Denmark and then Norway. Lastly, the cave people were Neanderthals, as some anthropologists believe that pockets of Neanderthals lived in isolated areas of Northern Europe past the time that had originally been assumed. This story is a "what if' they had survived even longer and interacted (badly) with the Vikings.

All correct except, the Vikings thing. Those people weren't Vikings. Vikings were a really specific people from the actual Norway, the ones living in the fjords. The northmen who interacted with the Arab world were Swedish, they traded furs for silver in Baghdad.
@@perrymanso6841 Except that most rune stones exists in sweden, the old tradition svealand. About half of the rune stones talk about travels to the west. So eventhough historians like to simplify it by saying what you said, its still not that easy. And it was a norwegian,dane and swede who decided to colonize Iceland. There were scnadinvaians present from all countries. We did not border opurselves up in the same way back then as we do now and our languages were closer to eachother. All of scandinavia was said to speak in danish tounge from an outsider perspective. That also doesnt mean that we were all danes just because englishman says so.

During this movies timeline Spain was almost all Muslim, so a lighter skinned convert to Islam could end up at the court of the Caliph if they were skilled enough. Much of Spain and north Africa was settled by Germanic tribes in Roman times so you could even have whiter people hanging around in Baghdad.
I remember that at the time I didn't particularly like the movie. But apparently tastes change, and now I find it quite funny. For me, Banderas will always remain the hero from Desperado, but he does an excellent job here too!

Im not sure of the dates but. thanks to the muslim conquest of spain, there where tons of muslims in spain and tones of spanish in Arabia. The time lines might bot link up but, thats normal in historical dramas, like this. The fact that people look at Antonio like spanish muslums from Arabia, didnt exsist make me think they suck at history.
imagine if they put a spin on this, and it was classic fantasy archetypes.... knight, ranger, smith, bard, cleric... same plot, same journey, same general setting, but _some_ magic in the mix, and it's not just a bunch of warriors but a bunch of actual professionals of their trade working together. that'd be a fun movie for sure.
this is a bet Michael Crichton made with a friend of his, who taught literature... the book "Eaters of the Dead" is Crichton's attempt to explain how Beowolf was grounded in real events that were romanticized over time and retelling after retelling. the fire worm is obviously the dragon. the chief of the Wen is Grendel, and the matriarch is Grendel's mother.
I have Spaniard ancestry on my dads side of his family tree, so Antonia Bamderas has always been a source of inspiration and entertainment for me personally ❤ especially since i have alotta qualities he did as a younger man lol 😅 But this movie really opened my eyes on ALOT of things that are VERY RELEVANT in this day amd age
Ahmed was a REAL PERSON who legitimately met Vikings in real life. You can actually read his journals, and he’s a big reason why we have so much information about Viking rituals. (Of course he never battled demons in real life.) The fiction book this movie is based on was written by the same guy who wrote Jurassic Park.
i like the sunglass thing at teh end.. but teh oen guy needs those flip down sunglass attachments to his glasses to fit in. also u need to rearrange your seating. white and indian needs to be mixed and glasses to no glasses needs also to be mixed. it gives u better feng shui ..

In interviews he says this, and that it was a big part of why he chose this charcter.
